The needs of children with autism spectrum condition (ASC) in paediatric emergency departments (EDs) can often be overlooked. EDs are high-stress environments for children with ASC, which can result in meltdowns, making the diagnostic process challenging. There should be provision for children with ASC, who can have sensory, behavioural and communication needs, in the same way that analgesia is provided for children in pain. This article promotes a multi-strategy approach to making reasonable adjustments to help meet the needs of these children and provide them with a positive hospital experie

Traffickers maintain control of victims through physical, sexual, and emotional violence and manipulation. Because victims of trafficking seek medical attention for the medical and psychological consequences of assault and neglected health conditions, emergency clinicians are in a unique position to recognize victims and intervene. Evaluation of possible trafficking victims is challenging because patients who h

In response to a unique societal need, a dedicated tonsil hospital was established in New York City in 1921. Its contributions were both medical and moral. The hospital's director, Robert Fowler, impressed by the variability of available surgical techniques, undertook a quest for the "better tonsil operation." His findings, published in an exhaustive text, highlighted several obscure anatomic relationships. Emphasis was on the primacy of anatomic mastery over the allure of new technology, with attention to the path leading from better surgery to better outcomes. Fowler's advocacy of both techn

This report presents the first case in pediatric literature of the acute intoxication of a five-year old male child who ate 300-400 grams of Tricholoma equestre daily for four consecutive days before the onset of poisoning. The symptoms included acute respiratory failure with the need of respiratorotherapy, muscle weakness concerning especially the pelvic girdle and the urinary bladder. The boy could not sit or stand up without help and the bladder had to be catheterised, several times daily, to avoid urine retention. The biochemical tests showed only minor muscle injury with maximal activity

The results of a study by the Tuberculosis Chemotherapy Centre, Madras, of the merits of home as compared with sanatorium treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis have indicated that treatment at home is satisfactory in the majority of cases. Before domiciliary chemotherapy can be introduced on a large scale, however, it must be established that it does not expose the patient's contacts to a special risk of infection, avoided by his isolation in a sanatorium. Accordingly, a further study was undertaken by the Centre to determine (a) the prevalence of tuberculosis among the family contacts of patie
