INTRODUCTION: Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) caused by L-serovars of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) causing asymptomatic infection, and anogenital disease. Epidemiologically, LGV has been strongly associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
METHODS: Using a retrospective longitudinal study design, we first described unadjusted and adjusted associations between demographic and sociobehavioral characteristics and rectal (r) CT (rCT) and rLGV in sexual health clinic attendees in Baltimore, MD, between 2009 and 2016 at baseline visits. OBJECTIVES: Sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnosis is complicated as these infections can present with lower genitourinary tract symptoms (LGUTS) that overlap with other disorders, i.e. urinary tract infections (UTIs). The study's objective was to determine potential missed STI diagnoses from patients presenting with LGUTS in the US between January 2010 and December 2019.
METHODS: The de-identified insurance claims data from the IBM® MarketScan® Research Databases were collected from patients (14-64 years old) who presented with LGUTS, which could be caused by an STI. A 'GAP' cohort w

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular human pathogen and is the most common cause of sexually transmitted diseases affecting both men and women. The pathogen can cause prostatitis and epididymitis in men. In women, cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and acute or chronic pelvic pain are frequent complications. More than half of C. trachomatis-positive patients have minimal or no symptoms, providing an ongoing reservoir for the infection. The lack of sensitive large-scale applicable point- of- care (POC) tests for C. trachomatis detection makes it

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) who report receptive anal intercourse (RAI) are currently recommended to undergo at least annual screening for rectal Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) infection.
METHODS: Using standard culture methods, we assessed the prevalence of rectal GC/CT among MSM who reported RAI in the last year (n = 326) at an urban sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic in a midwestern US city. A subset (n = 125) also underwent rectal GC/CT screening via nucleic acid amplification testing. We examined the associations between HIV status and pr

BACKGROUND: To investigate the possible effects of different levels of attributes of a point-of-care test (POCT) on sexually transmitted infection (STI) professionals' decisions regarding an ideal POCT for STI(s).
METHODS: An online survey was designed based on a large-scale in-depth focus discussion study among STI experts and professionals. The last section of the survey "build your own POCT" was designed by employing the discrete choice experiment approach. Practicing clinicians from two venues, STI-related international conference attendees and U.S. STD clinic clinicians were invited to p

OBJECTIVE: Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) has been implicated as a co-factor in cervical carcinogenesis. The goal of the current study was to investigate if Ct may play a role in pathogenesis of cervical adenocarcinoma and, specifically, if there is a co-infection between Ct and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in cervical adenocarcinomas. The second goal of the study was to determine the distribution of HPV genotypes in most recent cases of in-situ and invasive cervical adenocarcinomas.
METHODS: Biopsies of 71 cervical adenocarcinomas (31 in-situ and 40 invasive) were tested for the presence of Ct usi

Some of the sexually transmitted diseases' agents other than human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) take an active part in transmission of HIV infection. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in 18 HIV positive men without urethritis symptoms and in 70 HIV negative men with urethritis symptoms as control group. The urine samples were screened for C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The prevalence of N. gonorrhoeae in HIV positive men without urethritis symptoms was significantly higher than

BACKGROUND: Heat shock proteins (HSP) are essential mammalian and bacterial stress proteins. At the cellular level, they act as chaperones, have important regulatory functions, and are considered to be an essential factor for reproduction. Scarce information exists on the role of sensitization to HSP and the potential role in the aetiology of male infertility.
METHODS: The potential association of immunoglobulin (Ig)A antibodies (Ab) to the human 60 kDa heat shock protein (HSP 60) with several parameters of subclinical male genital tract infection/inflammation and with semen quality and sperm

INTRODUCTION: In 1997, the WHO established the role of genital tract infections in human infertility, currently responsible for 15% of the causes of infertility in men. The WHO classifies urethritis, prostatitis, vesiculitis, orchitis, and epididymitis as infections of the male accessory gland. This paper represents the state of the art on inflammation and infection of seminal tract. Objective of the study is to revise literature and to discuss regarding association to fertility.
METHODS: A literature search was performed on PubMed database (http://www.pubmed.gov) for peer-reviewed journal ar

Isolation of antimicrobial-resistant microbes from ocular infections may be becoming more frequent. Infections caused by these microbes can be difficult to treat and lead to poor outcomes. However, new therapies are being developed which may help improve clinical outcomes. This review examines recent reports on the isolation of antibiotic-resistant microbes from ocular infections. In addition, an overview of the development of some new antibiotic therapies is given. The recent literature regarding antibiotic use and resistance, isolation of antibiotic-resistant microbes from ocular infections

Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is a global problem. We compared the risk taking behaviors for CT infection between men and women. Adults (2299 females, 5559 males) were administered the Risk Behavior Assessment. In women, CT was associated with candidiasis, in men with gonorrhea, genital warts, and syphilis. Risk factors for both genders were trading sex for money, use of marijuana for women, and use of Ecstasy and Viagra for men. Those with CT had higher risk perception for HIV infection and were more likely to obtain HIV testing. Patient teaching and concurrent testing for HIV and CT are imperat

The pathophysiology of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) involves an ascending infection of cervicovaginal microorganisms, of which the most important pathogens are Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis. The clinician should recognize that not all women with PID will present with abdominal pain and that associated atypical symptoms such as meteorrhagia and dyspareunia should suggest diagnosis. The documentation of lower genital tract inflammation is helpful in making the diagnosis of PID. Treatment with broad spectrum antibiotic regimens is currently recommended. Prevention of sexual

In a clinical and microbiological study of women with urinary frequency and dysuria (excluding those with bacterial cystitis), 41 patients were compared with 42 control subjects. No difference was found between patients and controls in the incidence of infection by Chlamydia trachomatis or other sexually transmitted organisms. The numbers of lactobacilli and other fastidious organisms in the urine of patients with either mild or severe symptoms were similar and did not differ from the numbers in the urine of control subjects. The numbers of leucocytes in urine were also similar in both patient

Chlamydia pneumoniae is an obligate intracellular bacterium that causes respiratory infection in adults and children. There is evidence for an association between atypical bacterial pathogens and asthma pathogenesis. We sought to determine whether past C. pneumoniae infection triggers C. pneumoniae- IgE antibodies (Abs) in asthmatics and non-asthmatics, who had detectable IgG titers. C. pneumoniae IgE Abs were quantified using enzyme immunoassay (EIA). C. pneumoniae IgE Ab levels were higher in asthmatics compared with non-asthmatics. There was no correlation found between total serum IgE leve

Pelvic inflammatory disease and upper genital tract infection describe inflammatory changes in the upper female genital tract of any combination: endometritis, salpingitis, tubo-ovarian abscess and peritonitis in the small pelvis. In most cases the infection is ascending, Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are common with increasing incidence. The spectrum ranges from subclinical, asymptomatic infection to severe, life-threatening illness. Antibiotic treatment should be initiated promptly and must cover a broad spectrum of germs. Surgical treatment is necessary in cases of failure

In a cross-sectional study, 350 pregnant Capeverdian women were examined to assess the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection (NG) and Bacterial vaginosis (BV). Among various analytic methods used, the polymerase chain reaction PCR (for NG, CT) yielded a higher detection rate than did direct microscopy or culture (NG), or direct immuno-fluorescence (CT). Since the PCR analytic of air-dried specimens is not hampered by harsh storage and transport conditions, it could serve to validate other detection methods where laboratory facilities are suboptimal
