Effects of the Japanese Version of Metacognitive Training on Self-Efficacy and Sense of Coherence in Community-Dwelling Patients with Schizophrenia: A Pilot Study.

Improving self-efficacy, sense of coherence (SOC), and functional stability is essential for recovery and sustained community functioning among individuals with schizophrenia. However, the impact of the Japanese version of Metacognitive Training (MCT-J) on these factors has not been fully examined. This pilot study used a non-randomized Pre-Post design with sequential allocation (not a randomized controlled trial) and included 20 community-dwelling individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, with 10 participants each assigned to the MCT-J intervention and delayed intervention control groups. To

Randomised Evaluation of Sleep in Cognitive Impairment Trial (REST)-Protocol for a Feasibility Study of a Digital Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia Intervention.

Dementia is a leading and growing cause of disability worldwide. Insomnia is highly prevalent in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia and is associated with impaired cognition, functional decline, and reduced quality of life (QoL). Although sleep disturbance represents a potentially modifiable risk factor within the trajectory of cognitive impairment, there have not been many studies conducted to examine the feasibility or preliminary efficacy of digital cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (dCBT-I) in this population. The aim of this pilot randomised controlled feasibility study

Appraisals to affect: Testing the integrative cognitive model of bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive models have suggested that extreme appraisals of affective states and maladaptive affect regulation strategies are important in the development of bipolar symptomatology. Little is known about the pathway by which these appraisals and behaviours interact in the formation of activated and depressed affective states. This study tested the predictions that (1) ascent behaviours mediate the relationship between positive appraisals of activated mood and activation; and (2) descent behaviours mediate the relationship between negative appraisals of activated mood and depression.

Effectiveness of cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) in anorexia nervosa: a case series.

We investigated whether cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) is effective in improving cognitive flexibility in anorexia nervosa (AN). Twenty AN outpatients were consecutively recruited at the Eating Disorders Center of the Turin University. All participants completed 10 sessions of CRT. Neuropsychological performances improved with CRT. Data showed also a significant improvement of impulse regulation and interoceptive awareness (subscales of the Eating Disorders Inventory-2). CRT was also associated with improvement of reflexive skills and awareness. These preliminary findings are promising, b

Cognitive mediation of panic reduction during an early intervention for panic.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated cognitive mediation of improvement in panic disorder (PD) symptomatology during and after an early intervention for panic symptoms in subthreshold and mild PD. METHOD: We executed a pragmatic, pre-post, two-group, multi-site, randomized trial of an early intervention for panic symptoms, based on cognitive-behavioural therapy, vs. a wait-list control group in a sample of 217 participants with subthreshold PD or mild PD. RESULTS: First, two of the three subscales of the mediator variable Panic Appraisal Inventory (PAI-anticipation and PAI-coping) significantl

RESEARCH: Cognitive rehabilitation for bipolar disorder: An open trial for employed patients with residual depressive symptoms.

Bipolar disorder is characterized by recurrent episodes of depression and/or mania along with interepisodic mood symptoms that interfere with psychosocial functioning. Despite periods of symptomatic recovery, individuals with bipolar disorder often continue to experience impairments in psychosocial functioning, particularly occupational functioning. Two determinants of psychosocial functioning of euthymic (neither fully depressed nor manic) individuals with bipolar disorder are residual depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment (i.e., difficulties with executive functioning, attention, and

Cognitive training for divergent thinking in schizophrenia: a pilot study.

Individuals with schizophrenia demonstrate deficits in divergent thinking. This ability is indispensable for generating creative solutions and navigating the complexities of social interactions. In a pilot study, seventeen stable schizophrenia outpatients were randomly assigned to a training program for divergent thinking or a control program on convergent thinking. After eight weeks of training, participants in the divergent thinking program had significantly greater improvements on measures of idea fluency, negative symptoms, and interpersonal relations than did participants receiving the co

Advances in Parkinson's disease management using umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells.

Parkinson's disease (PD), a prevailing neurodegenerative disorder, is marked by the depletion of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of the brain. Current therapeutic approaches for PD only offer symptomatic relief, temporarily enhancing the patient's quality of life. In recent time, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have exhibited promise as a new regimen for PD due to their capacity to morph into various cell types and release neurotrophic factors that foster neuronal survival and regeneration. Human umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) is gaining attention as a viabl

Curcumin's multi-target mechanisms in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and creative modification techniques.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a well-established neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory impairment, cognitive dysfunction, and behavioral disturbances. With the global population aging, the prevalence of AD continues to rise, presenting significant challenges to both society and healthcare systems. Curcumin, a polyphenolic compound derived from turmeric rhizomes, has demonstrated considerable potential in AD treatment due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties. However, its clinical application remains constrained by chemical instability, poor water sol

Protocatechuic Acid Improves Alzheimer's Disease by Regulating the Cholinergic Synaptic Signaling Pathway.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory decline and cognitive impairments. The clinical treatments for AD have numerous adverse effects; hence, the exploration of natural products for AD therapy is of significant importance. Protocatechuic acid (PA), a natural phenolic acid, has been shown to possess various pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antitumor effects. However, the mechanisms underlying its therapeutic potential for AD remain elusive. This study utilized a β-amyloid (Aβ) injection into the hippoc

Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy Related Inflammation: A Single-Center Case Series Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related inflammation (CAA-RI) is a rare subtype of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), which presents mostly as a subacute and reversible encephalopathy. Primary symptoms include behavioral changes and cognitive decline in the form of rapidly progressive dementia, headache, seizures, and focal neurological deficits. It can also manifest as a varied range of typical and atypical presentations. Misdiagnosis is common because it shares symptoms with other infectious, ischemic and autoimmune pathologies and there is also a significant overlap of MRI findings.

Lysosomal storage diseases.

Lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) are a group of inherited metabolic diseases caused by dysfunction of the lysosomal system, with subsequent progressive accumulation of macromolecules, activation of inflammatory response, and cell death. Neurologic damage is almost always present, and it is usually degenerative. White matter (WM) involvement may be primary or secondary. Diseases with primary WM involvement are leukodystrophies, demyelinating (Krabbe disease and metachromatic leukodystrophy), and hypomyelinating leukodystrophies (free sialic acid storage disease, fucosidosis, and mucolipidosis

Intermittent theta burst stimulation over the left prefrontal cortex: no additional effect for virtual reality exposure therapy in acrophobia-a randomized trial.

Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental health conditions. Besides psycho-pharmacotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy with an exposure-based approach is considered the gold standard. However, not all patients benefit from this approach. Here, we aimed to translate laboratory findings on enhanced fear extinction with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to the clinic. In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 76 participants with acrophobia received an activating intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) targeting the left posterior prefronta…
