Mechanisms of change in mobile app-delivered acceptance and commitment therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder in China: a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of a mobile app-delivered Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (IACT) programme for individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in their PTSD symptoms. However, there are still few studies on its mediating mechanism. Objective: This secondary analysis aimed to examine whether six components of psychological flexibility - acceptance, present-moment awareness, self-as-context, cognitive defusion, valued living, and committed action - mediate the effects of an IACT programme for individuals with PTSD.Method: Data were obtained from a r

Cognitive mechanisms of creative meaning decoding for non-literal language-An eye-tracking study on Chinese logogriphs.

This eye-tracking study investigates the cognitive mechanisms underlying creative meaning decoding in Chinese logogriphs-character-based riddles whose solutions require a metalinguistic reinterpretation of the riddle surface. Unlike figurative language, where non-literal meanings operate via semantic-pragmatic extension, logogriphs demand that solvers inhibit the salient literal interpretation and instead access low-salience metalinguistic properties (e.g., the interpretation of orthographic decomposition, spatial manipulation of character components). Experiment 1 revealed a three-stage proce

Seeing anew: Mechanisms, outcomes, and challenges in adapting to restored sight via visual prostheses.

Restoring vision through prosthetic devices represents one of the most ambitious frontiers in translational neuroscience. Despite decades of progress, functional outcomes remain highly variable, often falling short of patient expectations, as adapting to restored vision through visual prostheses is a complex process influenced by neural plasticity, perceptual learning, and psychological factors. We propose a five-stage framework that captures the hierarchically dependent yet fragile process of adaptation: Device Activation, Perceptual Calibration, Cognitive Integration, Behavioral Generalizati

Structuring privacy policy: an AI approach.

INTRODUCTION: Privacy has become a significant concern in the digital world, especially concerning the personal data collected by websites and other service providers on the World Wide Web network. One of the significant approaches to enable the individual to control privacy is the privacy policy document, which contains vital information on this matter. Publishing a privacy policy is required by regulation in most Western countries. However, the privacy policy document is a natural free text-based object, usually phrased in a legal language, and rapidly changes, making it consequently relativ

Color-semantic congruency boosts distractor resistance in visual working memory: an alpha-band oscillation perspective.

Successful memory performance requires maintaining target representations while resisting distractor interference. Although prior event-related potential (ERP) studies linked cognitive resources to distractor resistance by controlling stimulus similarity, how other visual representational properties modulate this resistance remain unclear. Here, we employed ERPs to investigate visual working memory resistance mechanisms during maintenance by manipulating color-semantic congruency, with focus on alpha-band suppression. Distractor presentation elicited enhanced N2 amplitudes and alpha desynchron

AS1842856 Reduces β-Amyloid Burden via Inhibiting PLA2G4A-Mediated Lysosomal Dysfunction in APP/PS1 Mice.

AIMS: Both cytosolic phospholipase A2 (PLA2G4A)-induced lysosomal membrane disruption and glycogen synthase kinase-3α/β (GSK3α/β)-mediated lysosomal dysfunction have been implicated in neurodegeneration, with a potential regulatory relationship between these two pathways. We recently identified AS1842856 (AS) as a suppressor of GSK3α/β. This study was therefore designed to investigate whether AS mitigates Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression by targeting PLA2G4A to restore lysosomal homeostasis. METHODS: The therapeutic potential of AS was investigated in APP/PS1 mice by analyzing cognitive f

Social isolation disrupts prefrontal excitatory-inhibitory balance to impair social novelty memory in adult male mice.

Social isolation is a pervasive stressor that disrupts social cognition, yet its neural mechanisms in adulthood remain unclear. Here, we showed that four weeks of social isolation in adult male mice selectively impaired social novelty memory without affecting general sociability, object recognition, working memory, or anxiety- and depression-like behaviors. This deficit was sex-specific, as female mice remained unaffected. Mechanistically, c-Fos mapping and in vivo calcium imaging revealed that social isolation induced a maladaptive shift in prefrontal excitatory-inhibitory (E/I) balance, char

Collective ant transport outperforms gravity-based solvers on complex puzzles.

Collective cognition, in which groups display enhanced problem-solving abilities compared with individuals, is a hallmark of ant behaviour. For instance, in navigation tasks, such as the piano movers' problem, a short-term memory-like directional persistence emerges in large enough ant groups and aids them in implementing an effective wall-following heuristic. Here, we investigate the collective problem-solving abilities of Paratrechina longicornis by presenting groups of varying sizes with an array of piano movers' puzzles. We find that increasingly complex puzzles reveal performance differen

From interoception to anxiety and social cognition: the mediating roles of intolerance of uncertainty and alexithymia.

Daily life requires navigating uncertainty arising from external events and internal bodily sensations. Although uncertainty often elicits anxiety, individuals differ markedly in their sensitivity to it, a trait termed Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU). Across two studies, we examined how IU and alexithymia (difficulties identifying and describing emotions) mediate the links between interoceptive sensibility (self-reported awareness, attention, and appraisal concerning bodily sensations) and both anxiety and social cognition. In Study 1 (N = 190), participants completed questionnaires assessing

Executive Function Profiles in ADHD and Dyslexia: A Mixed-Method Neurocognitive Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Executive function (EF) impairments are common in neurodevelopmental disorders but are often examined using group-level approaches that may overlook clinically meaningful cognitive heterogeneity. This study explored EF heterogeneity in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), developmental dyslexia, and comorbid presentations using a clinically grounded mixed-method approach. Methods: Standardized neuropsychological data from the NEPSY-II, WISC-IV, and Woodcock-Johnson IV batteries were integrated with a case-based thematic synthesis of 11 clinical

Medical and Non-Surgical Strategies for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Historically, mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) was often overlooked. However, growing clinical consensus emphasizes that active intervention is essential to manage physiological impairments and facilitate functional recovery. As secondary impact syndrome poses fatal risks during the acute phase, transitioning from passive rest to multimodal, active management is critical. This paper reviews current medical and non-surgical strategies for mTBI, shifting the paradigm from simple observation to proactive, evidence-based interventions. The review categorizes non-surgical interventions into 4 pri

Tablet-based cognitive self-assessment: English translation of Cog-First app.

PURPOSE: Acquired brain injuries (ABI) frequently lead to cognitive impairments, which can be challenging to detect and persist for years, negatively impacting patient outcomes. Timely and specific screening is crucial for proper management. Cog-First is a tablet-based self-assessment of executive functions, memory, and attention lasting approximately 20 min. This study aimed to develop the English version of Cog-First and evaluate its feasibility. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A two-phase study was conducted. Phase 1 involved a rigorous translation and cultural adaptation process, following establi

SIRT7-Mediated H2BK120 Succinylation Drives Aberrant Mitophagy in Sepsis-Associated Cognitive Dysfunction.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a severe neurological complication of sepsis, yet how metabolic disturbances engage epigenetic regulation in SAE remains unclear. We found that septic mice exhibited hippocampal succinate and succinyl-CoA accumulation, accompanied by enhanced neuronal histone H2BK120 succinylation (H2BK120su). Pharmacological reduction of succinylation alleviated neuronal injury and improved cognitive function. Mechanistically, integrated CUT&Tag and transcriptomic analyses identified Pdcd1 as a downstream gene associated with H2BK120su enrichment. H2BK120su enrichment

Irisin and the muscle-brain axis: Mechanisms and translational potential.

The muscle-brain axis integrates peripheral metabolic activity with central nervous system function. Among the endocrine signaling molecules regulating such crosstalk, the peptide hormone irisin released during muscle contraction seems to play relevant roles. Irisin is generated by the proteolytic cleavage of the fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 and has emerged as a key regulator of neurotrophic and metabolic adaptation. Although initially described as a myokine, irisin is also expressed in adipose and neural tissues, acting through autocrine, paracrine, and endocrine mechanism

Artificial intelligence interaction is not equivalent to social interaction: Rethinking artificial intelligence-mediated digital exposure in early childhood.

The increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into children's daily environments challenges traditional approaches to evaluating digital exposure. Although existing research has primarily focused on screen time, AI-based interactions introduce qualitatively different dynamics that remain insufficiently conceptualized. This narrative review aims to synthesize current evidence on digital media use and emerging evidence on AI-based interaction to propose a novel framework distinguishing AI engagement from traditional screen exposure. Findings indicate that traditional screen exposure

Development of a Novel AAV-Mediated microRNA Gene Therapy for Spatial Suppression of BACE1 to Improve Cognitive Function in Alzheimer's Disease Model Mice.

The beta-site amyloid precursor protein (APP)-cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) is a promising and rational target for Alzheimer's disease (AD), but current clinical trials have been disappointing. Consequently, utilizing the intrinsic regulatory mechanisms of BACE1 during AD pathogenesis might provide valuable insights into the treatment of this devastating disease. In this study, we proposed a combination of AAV delivery and microRNA therapeutics targeting AD at its root by sustained and spatial inhibition of BACE1 with a single therapeutic injection. We demonstrate that upregulation of BACE1 is cor

Evaluation of Oculomotor Function Following Sleep Improvement With Lemborexant in Older Adults With Insomnia.

OBJECTIVE: Insomnia impairs cognitive and brain function, and its treatment improves outcomes. Eye movements are objective biomarkers of neurocognitive state and are sensitive to sleep loss, but whether treatment improves oculomotor function remains unclear. We examined associations between sleep improvement and eye movement changes after hypnotic intervention. METHODS: In this open-label, single-arm study, 31 Japanese adults aged ≥ 50 years with insomnia and preserved cognition received nightly lemborexant (5-10 mg) and were assessed at baseline, week 4, and week 12. Eye movements were measu

Omics signature of new-onset mild cognitive impairment and dementia in a population-based study.

Plasma proteomics and metabolomics snapshots reveal a molecular signature in circulation delineating pathophysiology of major and minor neurocognitive disorder. To identify new cues to disease aetiology and diagnostic approach, we applied plasma proteomics and metabolomics profiling platforms to samples collected in a population-based study of the Singapore Longitudinal Ageing Studies Wave 2 (SLAS-2). In this longitudinal study, blood samples were analysed with standard clinical chemistry, plasma proteomics (Sengenics) and metabolomics (Nightingale) panels. Participants were followed up for th
