Porcine epidemic diarrhea viruses (2022-2023) in Northern Vietnam: revealing a new subgenogroup (G2e) to emerge in pigs.

We present evidence supporting the identification of a subgenogroup of emerging Porcine epidemic diarrhea viruses (PEDVs) (2022-2023) in six provinces in Central and Northern Vietnam. It is proposed as a new subgenogroup G2e. This group has nine sites with unique amino acid variations and is phylogenetically different from previously identified ones. They are genetically associated with Chinese Guangxi-PEDV strains, which indicate a plausible emerging origins. The between-group mean genetic distances estimated between these and strains of typical subgenotypes (G1a, G1b, G1c, G1d, G2a, G2b, G2c

Wastewater SARS-CoV-2 monitoring in a university hospital forecasts multilevel epidemic curves in Taipei City, Taiwan.

As COVID-19 shifts toward endemicity, ongoing surveillance remains critical to identifying and containing potential outbreaks, particularly in high-risk settings. Wastewater monitoring at targeted institutions offers a promising approach for early detection; however, its utility in forecasting broader epidemic trends remains underexplored. This study aimed to establish the wastewater surveillance platform for SARS-CoV-2 in a University Hospital to forecast the epidemic at the hospital, the surrounding community, and the city levels. During April and October 2022, we conducted routine wastewate

CROI 2025: The Challenges of Sustaining Viral Suppression, Addressing Advanced HIV Disease, and Ending the HIV Epidemic Targets.

Important new data were presented at the 2025 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections. Mathematic models predicted a reversal of progress toward Ending the HIV Epidemic metrics if funding is discontinued. Interventions that improved HIV care outcomes included a clinic-based, person-centered care intervention and a low-barrier care clinic service delivery model. Several studies demonstrated varying trends in hepatitis B and C incidence and outcomes, and data from one trial showed the seroprotective durability of the adjuvanted hepatitis B vaccine in people with HIV. Focus contin

Harnessing Egocentric Networks to Inform an Enhanced Social Network Strategy in a Southern US "Ending the HIV Epidemic" Region.

BACKGROUND: The HIV epidemic in the United States disproportionately affects sexual and gender minority (SGM) communities. Social networks shape health behaviors. Understanding the structure and dynamics of SGM networks could enhance engagement with HIV-related services. METHODS: We analyzed egocentric social networks of SGM individuals in Charlotte, North Carolina, who engaged in HIV-related services. Participants (egos) identified social connections (alters) from the past 6 months. Networks were stratified based on the size of the ego's sexual network (0-1 vs. ≥2), defined as the subset of

Potent antiviral activity of simnotrelvir against key epidemic SARS-CoV-2 variants with a high resistance barrier.

Simnotrelvir is an oral small-molecule antiviral agent targeting the 3C-like protease (3CLpro) of SARS-CoV-2, proven effective against the Delta variant with favorable pharmacokinetics and safety in preclinical study. In this study, we further evaluated the antiviral efficacy of simnotrelvir against a range of emerging Omicron variants, including BA.1, BA.4, BA.5, CH.1.1, XBB.1.5, XBB.1.16, EG.5, and JN.1. In vitro assays with Vero E6 cells confirmed that simnotrelvir exhibited robust antiviral activity across these variants, comparable to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drug n

Pseudomonas aeruginosa chronic infections in patients with bronchiectasis: a silent reservoir of carbapenemase-producing epidemic high-risk clones.

OBJECTIVES: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the major drivers of morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic underlying diseases. Whereas cystic fibrosis (CF) P. aeruginosa strains have been well studied, non-CF bronchiectasis isolates have received less scientific attention. METHODS: We determined the antibiotic susceptibility profiles of a collection of 100 P. aeruginosa isolates recovered from a total of 100 non-CF bronchiectasis patients attending a Catalonian hospital. All carbapenemase-producing isolates were characterized by WGS. RESULTS: Twelve isolates were classified as MDR (

Developing a National Longitudinal Tobacco Cohort of Youth and Young Adults: The Tobacco Epidemic Evaluation Network (TEEN+) Study.

INTRODUCTION: Timely and relevant data are critical to monitoring the rapidly changing youth vaping epidemic and for understanding the prevalence, patterns of use, knowledge, and perceptions of tobacco products. While e-cigarettes have been the most used tobacco product among youth for nearly a decade, new nicotine delivery products continue to be introduced to the US market. Flavored tobacco products, including flavored e-cigarettes, menthol cigarettes, and flavored cigars, drive disparities in use by young people. AIMS AND METHODS: To examine tobacco use among youth and young adults, the Mo

Intersectional identity, risk behaviors, and adolescent mental health in South Korea: who suffers the most in the loneliness epidemic?

PURPOSE: Intersectionality is a theoretical framework that allows researchers to examine how multiple, overlapping social identities such as gender and socioeconomic status (SES) interact to shape individuals' experiences and contribute to inequalities. This study examined the associations between intersectional identity and mental health among South Korean adolescents and whether risk behaviors modify these associations. METHODS: The 2023 Korea Youth Behavior Web-Based Survey (n=52,880; 12-18 years) was used. Gender and family SES served as intersectional identities. Outcome included stress,

Progress and Priorities to End the HIV Epidemic by 2030: Combined Lessons From 120 US Implementation Research Projects.

Five years into the US national Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) plan, it is a critical time to examine what has been learned and what still needs to be studied to achieve its 2030 goals of reducing new HIV infections by 90%. While much has already been gained from the 250+ individual National Institutes of Health-funded implementation research projects and the capacity building provided by the Implementation Science Coordination Initiative (ISCI) and 9 regional consultation hubs (RCHs), identifying generalizable implementation science lessons requires the synthesis of findings across multiple si

Acute Febrile Illness Associated with an Emerging Dengue 4 GIIb Variant Causing Epidemic in León, Nicaragua 2022.

Historically, DENV-4 has been rarely associated with epidemics and has been less well-studied than DENV-1 to -3. Epidemic dengue struck several South and Central American countries in 2022, with Nicaragua reporting the highest incidence. In an acute febrile illness (AFI) cohort enrolled from June to September 2022, 58 (34%) of 172 patients had PCR-confirmed dengue, of which 46 (79%) were serotyped as DENV-4. In this cohort, acute dengue, as a proportion of AFI, increased from 8% in June to a peak of 58% in August. Genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis identified a lineage of DENV-4 Genot…
