First Bite Syndrome Following Rhytidectomy: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: First bite syndrome (FBS) is a known complication of parotid gland resection, parapharyngeal space dissection, and cervical sympathetic chain injury. It can be described as severe cramping or spasms in the parotid region triggered by the first bite of a meal, with the pain lessening during each subsequent bite. Although dissection for a rhytidectomy is in the vicinity of the parotid parenchyma, face-lift is not typically characterized as a procedure that can lead to FBS. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 53-year-old female underwent a deep plane face-lift to address her goals of improving jowls

An Emotional Go/No-Go fMRI study in adolescents with depressive symptoms following concussion.

BACKGROUND: Following concussion, adolescents may experience both poor inhibitory control and increased depressive symptoms. fMRI research suggests that adolescents with major depressive disorder have abnormal physiological responses in the frontostriatal pathway, and exhibit poorer inhibitory control in the presence of negatively-aroused images. The scarcity of information surrounding depression following concussion in adolescents makes it difficult to identify patients at risk of depression after injury. This is the first study to examine neural activity patterns in adolescents with post-con

Early complications following cochlear implantation in children and their management.

OBJECTIVES: To report the early postoperative complications of cochlear implantation (CI) in the pediatric population and discuss the intervention measures. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 260 consecutive pediatric cochlear implantations performed at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University between March 2010 and July 2013. All patients were younger than 12 years old at the time of implantation, with a mean age of 4.3 years, and 47 cases had inner ear malformations. Complications correlated to age at CI and inner ear malformations were analyzed using the χ(2) test. RESULTS:

Spinal and nucleus caudalis dorsal root entry zone operations for chronic pain.

OBJECTIVE: Dorsal root entry zone (DREZ) operations came into medical practice after the demonstration of increased electrical activity in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord and brainstem in patients with deafferentation of the central nervous system after injury to these areas. The aim of the study was to describe the technique and the effectiveness of spinal DREZ and nucleus caudalis (NC) DREZ operations, which may be the treatments of choice in unique chronic pain conditions that do not respond to medical therapy or any other surgical methods. METHODS: Fifty-five patients (44 spinal, 11 NC

Avobenzone induces intestinal injury by targeting ATG14 and impairing mitophagy.

BACKGROUND: Avobenzone (Avo) is a widely used ultraviolet filter in sunscreens and facial skincare products. In addition to dermal exposure, chronic oral intake may also occur through daily-use products. However, the potential intestinal toxicity of Avo and its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. METHODS: We investigated the intestinal effects of Avo using repeated oral exposure mouse models, the Caco-2 intestinal epithelial cell line, human intestinal organoids, proteomic analysis, and mechanistic assays examining autophagy, mitophagy, mitochondrial stress responses, and Wnt/β-ca

Implementation of the Gamut of Physiotherapy Maneuvers in Restoration and Normalization of Functional Potencies in a Patient With a Hemorrhagic Stroke: A Case Report.

A stroke is a medical emergency characterized by a sudden onset of focal neurological deficits due to an interruption in the blood flow to the brain tissues, with signs and symptoms persisting for more than 24 hours. Motor, sensory, recognition, language, and perceptual deficiencies are typical signs of the disease, depending on the areas affected, the size of the injury, and the origin of the injury. Patients who have had a stroke frequently have problems like weakness, stiffness, and altered movement patterns in addition to poor balance and mobility issues. Numerous physiotherapeutic strateg

Effects of motion and audio-visual redundancy on upright and inverted face and feature preferences in 4-13-month old pre- and full-term NICU graduates.

NICU infants are reported to have diminished social orientation and increased risk of socio-communicative disorders. In this eye tracking study, we used a preference for upright compared to inverted faces as a gauge of social interest in high medical risk full- and pre-term NICU infants. We examined the effects of facial motion and audio-visual redundancy on face and eye/mouth preferences across the first year. Upright and inverted baby faces were simultaneously presented in a paired-preference paradigm with motion and synchronized vocalization varied. NICU risk factors including birth weight,

Gunshot wounds to the face: level I urban trauma center: a 10-year level I urban trauma center experience.

INTRODUCTION: Gunshot wounds (GSWs) to the face are an infrequent occurrence outside of a war zone. However, when they occur, they constitute a significant reconstructive challenge. We present our 10-year experience at an urban level I trauma center to define the patterns of injury, assess the morbidity and mortality, and estimate the cost to the health care system. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on all patients admitted to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center with GSWs to the head and neck region between January 1997 and January 2007. Those who had sustained GSWs to the face requiring o

Comparative evaluation of MRI-based bone-targeted sequences and computed tomography for preoperative assessment of midfacial trauma.

This prospective study aimed to compare computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the preoperative assessment of acute midfacial trauma. Twenty patients received posttraumatic CT and MRI scans using a 3T scanner with a dedicated 15-channel dentomaxillofacial coil. Five MRI protocols were evaluated: UTE, DESS, Dark Bone, StarVIBE, and STIR. Three observers qualitatively assessed fracture detection, image quality, fracture line visibility, cortical delineation, and bone-to-soft-tissue contrast using a five-point scale. Descriptive statistics and inter-observer reliability

The Effectiveness of Early Treatment With Intense Pulsed Light Combined With Fractional Erbium Laser in Preventing Post-traumatic Hypertrophic Scar Formation.

BACKGROUND: Once scars form and begin to proliferate, treatment becomes challenging. Traditional methods of scar treatment often provide suboptimal results. Therefore, early intervention has become widely accepted, with a focus on prevention during the wound-healing phase rather than later treatment. Here, the authors evaluate the effectiveness of early treatment with intense pulsed light (IPL) combined with fractional erbium laser in preventing the formation of post-traumatic hypertrophic scars. METHODS: A total of 120 patients who underwent emergency cosmetic suture surgery for facial traum

Self-inflicted face gunshot injuries: two case reports.

Self-inflicted gunshot injuries to the head and neck area are challenging cases. Immediate and complex approach is required due to complexity of head and neck anatomy. The extent of injury largely depends on velocity of a rifle and penetrated tissues. Management of these type of patients consist of vital resuscitation, primary wound management, soft and hard tissue reconstruction and rehabilitation. Here we present two cases of self-inflicted gunshot injuries with low and high velocity rifles.

Brief Commentary on Gidley et al: "Contemporary Opinions on Intraoperative Facial Nerve Monitoring".

Intraoperative facial nerve monitoring (IOFNM) has evolved from requiring sophisticated electromyography equipment to a self-contained monitor with an auditory signal. Subspecialty ear surgeons currently use IOFNM in most otologic and temporal bone procedures as it improves facial nerve outcomes. Our competency and near-universal adoption of IOFNM notwithstanding, otolaryngologists are rarely reimbursed for this procedure. Subspecialists value this technology as medically necessary and should importune fair reimbursement for their expertise in this procedure that is so vital to patient safety.

Removal of infratemporal fossa foreign body under C-arm.

A 12-year-old boy presented to our emergency department after being shot in the face. A computed tomographic scan revealed a bullet through the posterolateral wall of the maxillary sinus into the right infratemporal area, just adjacent to the skull base. We elected transantral approach with the help of endoscopy and C-arm. The bullet was successfully removed. Little is known on the best strategy for removing the infratemporal foreign body. Our experience in this case provides a safe and effective way for such injury.

Comparing classification methods for diffuse reflectance spectra to improve tissue specific laser surgery.

BACKGROUND: In the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, newly developed laser scalpels have multiple advantages over traditional metal scalpels. However, they lack haptic feedback. This is dangerous near e.g. nerve tissue, which has to be preserved during surgery. One solution to this problem is to train an algorithm that analyzes the reflected light spectra during surgery and can classify these spectra into different tissue types, in order to ultimately send a warning or temporarily switch off the laser when critical tissue is about to be ablated. Various machine learning algorithms are a

Image guided navigation by intraoperative CT scan for cochlear implantation.

INTRODUCTION: For successful cochlear implantation in difficult ears, image guided navigation systems can help identify surgical landmarks or confirm the surgeon's anatomical knowledge. In this pilot case study, exact navigation based on intraoperative CT scanning was investigated and helped confirm important and necessary landmarks, such as the facial nerve, cochlea and intracochlear structures, and at least adequate placement of a straight electrode array. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Intraoperative imaging was performed on a 40-slice sliding-gantry CT scanner (Siemens SOMATOM Sensation 40 Open) w
