With the increasing occurrence of predisposing factors, invasive candidiasis is being diagnosed more frequently. Based on a review of only a few previous reported cases, we describe and discuss the unusual case of candidal cervical spondylodiscitis in a 36 year old man who had sustained a polytrauma, complicated through a Candida albicans pneumonia. The main symptom was disabling neck pain. Clinical, laboratory and radiological findings were unspecific. The definitive diagnosis was determined by MRI imaging and biopsy. The early diagnosis and surgical treatment with a sufficient debridement an

BACKGROUND: Infection is still a frequent cause of morbidity and mortality in acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) patients receiving chemothera … ivided into the AP group (250 mg ciprofloxacin twice a day, 150 mg roxithromycin twice a day, 50 mg fluconazole once a day) and the control group for a prospective analysis.
RESULTS: The incidence of fever was 82.6% in the AP group and 91.6% in the control group (p = 0.15). Though classification and sites of infections showed no difference between the two gr …

PURPOSE: To report a case of Candida keratitis following penetrating keratoplasty in a patient with Candidiasis of the fingernails.
CASE REPORT: An 80 year-old male presented with recurrent Candida keratitis following penetrating keratoplasty. Patient was found to have evidence of Candidiasis of the fingernails.
COMMENT: Candidiasis of the fingernails have led to recurrent fungal keratitis following penetrating keratoplasty. Cultures grew Candida albicans. Preoperative recognition, prompt and appropriate therapy of foci of infection may prevent Candida keratitis following penetrating keratop

Azole-resistant thrush has emerged as a problem in people who are infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), especially those who have low CD4 cell counts who have had a previous relapse of oral candidiasis, and in those who require long-term suppressive antifungal therapy. Because of the development of a standardized methodology for antifungal susceptibility testing and interpretive criteria for resistance testing, studies of the clinical predictive value of in vitro results are possible. In this study, 61% of organisms isolated from patient

We describe a Malay girl with disseminated cryptococcosis affecting the lungs, liver, lymph nodes and bones. The diagnosis was made by culture of the bone marrow. Tests of immune function showed that she was HIV-negative but the CD4 percentage was persistently low. Idiopathic CD4+ T-lymphocytopenia was diagnosed. The child died despite two courses of anti-fungal therapy.

In kidney transplant recipients, acute renal failure resulting from a ureteral obstruction by fungus balls is uncommon. We report a 60-year-old man diagnosed with ureteral obstruction caused by Candida albicans fungus balls early after transplant. Diagnosis was made by a T2-weighted magnetic resonance image, which demonstrated fungus balls as a low-intensity mass in the pelvis and microscopic examination findings in the urine. The patient was treated successfully with an antifungal agent and direct irrigation. It should be noted that fungus balls may cause ureteral obstruction of transplanted

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytes are the main causative agent of all onychomycosis, but genus Microsporum is infrequent and the risk of acquiring the infection is often associated with exposure to risk factors.
OBJECTIVES: To describe clinical characteristics of onychomycosis due to Microsporum onychomycosis in an urban population.
METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of the epidemiological and clinical features of 18 Microsporum onychomycosis cases of a total of 4220 of onychomycosis cases diagnosed between May 2008 and September 2011 at the tertiary referral center for mycology in Guatemala

Aneuploidy is known to be deleterious and underlies several common human diseases, including cancer and genetic disorders such as trisomy 21 in Down's syndrome. In contrast, aneuploidy can also be advantageous and in fungi confers antifungal drug resistance and enables rapid adaptive evolution. We report here that sexual reproduction generates phenotypic and genotypic diversity in the human pathogenic yeast Cryptococcus neoformans, which is globally distributed and commonly infects individuals with compromised immunity, such as HIV/AIDS patients, causing life-threatening meningoencephalitis. Tinea incognito is a dermatophyte infection of the skin that presents atypically because it has previously been treated with imunnosuppresive medication. Herein we present a case of a middle-aged man who was initially clinically diagnosed to have plaque-type psoriasis on his arms. Over the course of two months of topical hydrocortisone and calciptriol treatment as well as phototherapy, the rash worsened. At the time of presentation to hospital the patient had a pruritic, widespread, sloughing, erythematous rash with areas of eschar. A punch biopsy skin confirmed dermatophyte fungal infection o

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to report the clinical features and treatment outcomes in a series of patients with endogenous endophthalmitis treated over a 10-year period in a single hospital in northern China.
METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective chart review of 19 patients (23 eyes) treated for culture-proven endogenous endophthalmitis at the First Hospital of China Medical University between 1998 and 2007.
RESULTS: Patients were followed up for a mean of 15.9 months (range: 0.5-41 months). The main systemic predisposing risk factors were diabetes mellitus (52.6%), immunosup

Thirty-five animals (23 dogs, 12 cats) with fungal urinary tract infections (UTIs) were retrospectively studied. Dysuria, hematuria, increased frequency of micturition, anorexia, depression, and pyrexia were the most common clinical signs noted. Seven species of fungi were identified in the affected animals. Candida albicans was the most common isolate. Most animals diagnosed with fungal UTI also had other concurrent urinary tract or medical problems. Lower urinary tract diseases, diabetes mellitus, neoplasia, and renal failure were the most common concurrent or preceding diseases identified.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent advances in interventional techniques and antimicrobial therapy have significantly affected the morbidity and mortality of infected pancreatic necrosis. This review describes elements of this progress.
RECENT FINDINGS: Operative management of infected pancreatic necrosis has consisted of formal laparotomy and debridement of the pancreatic necrosis/infection. Typically, the abdominal wound has been left open and the pancreatic bed has been reexplored at frequent intervals. This staged approach has been replaced by a single definitive operative procedure. More recently

We present a case of disseminated intracranial infection by Candida albicans in a 5-year-old girl who had fever and a change of consciousness after surgery for complex congenital heart malformation. MR imaging revealed multiple small ring-enhancing hemorrhagic abscesses. One year after antifungal treatment, the abscesses and ventriculomegaly were almost completely resolved. The patient was discharged in a stable but vegetative condition.
