Additional value of FDG PET/CT to contrast-enhanced CT in the differentiation between benign and malignant intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas with mural nodules.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at determining the additional value of FDG PET/CT to contrast-enhanced CT in the differentiation between benign and malignant intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) of the pancreas with mural nodules. METHODS: This retrospective review of medical records was approved by our institutional review board. The preoperative PET/CT images of 16 non-diabetic patients with surgically proven IPMN, where mural nodules of 3 mm or larger were shown by preoperative contrast-enhanced CT, were retrospectively evaluated. The 16 patients were divided into two groups: 7 pa

18F-FDG uptake on PET in primary mediastinal non-thymic neoplasm: a clinicopathological study.

BACKGROUND: The usefulness of 2-[(18)F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ((18)F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) has been investigated in thymic epithelial tumors. However, little is known about PET imaging of (18)F-FDG in primary non-thymic mediastinal neoplasms. The aim of this study is to explore the clinicopathological significance of (18)F-FDG PET in primary mediastinal (non-thymic) neoplasms. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with mediastinal neoplasms who underwent (18)F-FDG PET before treatment were included in this study. Tumor sections were stained by immunohistochemistry for glucose tran

Utility of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography for distinguishing between the histological types of early stage thymic epithelial tumours.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have shown the usefulness of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in differentiating between World Health Organization (WHO) histological subgroups of thymic epithelial tumours. However, these reports may have included many advanced cases of these lesions (Masaoka stage III or IV) of high-risk subtypes. The objective of our present study was to assess the usefulness of FDG-PET for distinguishing the histological subtypes of early stage thymic epithelial tumours (Masaoka stage I or II). METHODS: Twenty patients who had undergone an FDG-PET

Change in T2-fat saturation MRI correlates with outcome in cervical cancer patients.

PURPOSE: To compare pretreatment and midtreatment tumor intensity as measured by T2 fat-saturation (T2-FS) MRI and its association with treatment response in cervical cancer patients. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Weekly MRI scans were performed for brachytherapy planning on 23 consecutive patients with clinical Stage IB1 to IIIB cervical cancer treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy. These scans were performed on a 1.5-T clinical scanner using a specialized pelvic coil. Mean signal intensity from T2-FS imaging was calculated for each tumor voxel. Average tumor intensity and tumor volume were rec

Immunoglobulin D-lambda type multiple myeloma presenting with FDG-PET/CT negative bone marrow involvement.

We here report a rare case of a patient with IgD-lambda-positive multiple myeloma presenting with FDG-PET/CT negative bone marrow involvement. A 72-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for evaluation of a paravertebral tumor of the chest. Thoracotomy was performed and a histopathological evaluation of resected intrathoracic tumor demonstrated a plasmacytic neoplasma. Initially we thought that this case was a solitary plasmacytoma because there were no positive findings on postoperative FDG-PET/CT. However, bone marrow aspiration study demonstrated massive infiltration of myeloma cells (72

Pulmonary FDG uptake without a CT counterpart - a pitfall in interpreting PET/CT images.

Abnormal pulmonary 18F-FDG foci may occur with benign lesions like pneumonia but seldomly without any pathological CT findings. We report the case of a focal pulmonary 18F-FDG uptake without CT correlate in an initial staging examination of a patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue. A follow-up study did not show any suspicious lesion in this area, but pneumonia with 18F-FDG uptake in another region of the lung. 18F-FDG foci without pathological CT are a rare finding and have been associated with emboli. In the literature two main mechanisms underlying focal 18F-FDG upta

Non-small cell lung cancer: prognostic importance of positive FDG PET findings in the mediastinum for patients with N0-N1 disease at pathologic analysis.

PURPOSE: To assess the prognostic implications of mediastinal positron emission tomographic (PET) findings in patients undergoing curative resection of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have histologically negative mediastinal lymph nodes (LNs), with the hypothesis that positive findings at PET are prognostic even in patients with negative histologic findings in the LNs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Records of patients with a preoperative PET undergoing curative surgery, without adjuvant radiation, for pathologic T1-3N0-1 NSCLC at the University of North Carolina between 2000 and 2006 were rev

Jejunal cancer detected after a resection of bilateral ovarian metastasis: report of a case.

A 50-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of abdominal distension and fullness. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed bilateral ovarian tumors. Although these ovarian tumors were suspected of being metastatic, the primary tumor site could not be detected before the bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. At the time of laparotomy, there was no apparent peritoneal dissemination or ascites. The pathological findings suggested that the ovarian tumors were metastases from cancer of the digestive tract. Positron emission tomography using (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron

False-positive F-18 FDG uptake in PET/CT studies in pediatric patients with abdominal Burkitt's lymphoma.

INTRODUCTION: In pediatric patients with abdominal Burkitt's lymphoma, the involvement of the gastrointestinal tract and abdominal lymph nodes are the main presenting feature of the disease. Chemotherapy is the main treatment modality and could be preceded by surgical excision of the abdominal masses. To achieve cure or long-term disease-free survival a balance has to be struck between aggressive chemotherapy and the probability of tumor necrosis secondary to treatment complicated by acute infections, perforation or intestinal bleeding. F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/comp

In vivo assessment of brain monoamine systems in parkin gene carriers: a PET study.

PET studies in parkin-linked parkinsonism have generally been performed to assess striatal dopaminergic dysfunction and very little is known about the involvement of other monoaminergic structures in these patients. Measurements of (18)F-dopa uptake into serotonergic and noradrenergic structures provide an indication of the functional integrity of these nerve terminals. We used (18)F-dopa PET to assess changes in brain monoaminergic function associated with parkin mutations. Twelve patients with parkin-linked parkinsonism and 12 asymptomatic parkin heterozygotes were included in the study. Ele

Intestinal metastasis from non-small-cell lung cancer initially detected by ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography.

Gastrointestinal (GI) metastasis from non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is relatively rare. As most patients with GI metastasis are diagnosed on the occasion of serious complications, such as ileus or perforation, the appropriate diagnosis is important. Here, we report a case of NSCLC metastatic to the small intestine diagnosed at initial staging using ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography.

Clinical use of combined positron emission tomography and computed tomography in thymoma recurrence.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of hybrid fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) for surveillance and follow-up of thymoma patients to detect recurrent disease. A retrospective chart review was performed on 37 thymoma patients who underwent FDG-PET/CT-scans during postoperative follow-up. The following information was obtained: clinical indication for FDG-PET/CT, the results of the FDG-PET/CT, particularly with regard to the additional diagnostic imaging information, the localization of the disease and subsequent clinical

Pulmonary cryptococcosis: imaging findings in 23 non-AIDS patients.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to review the patterns of lung abnormalities of pulmonary cryptococcosis on CT images, position emission tomography (PET) findings of the disease, and the response of lung abnormalities to the therapies in non-AIDS patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated the initial CT (n = 23) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET (n = 10), and follow-up (n = 23) imaging findings of pulmonary cryptococcosis in 23 non-AIDS patients. Lung lesions were classified into five patterns at CT: single nodular, multiple clustered nodular, multiple scattered nodular, mass-like, and bronchopneum

A case of Sturge-Weber syndrome with symptomatic hemiplegic migraine: clinical and multimodality imaging data during a prolonged attack.

Hemiplegic migraine (HM) in the setting of Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) has been previously described. Here, we report clinical and multimodal imaging data on a 21-year-old man with SWS and HM, who presented during an acute HM attack with a dense left-hemispheric syndrome (expressive aphasia and right sensorimotor hemiplegia), lasting for more than 10 days. Repeated EEGs were without evidence of status epilepticus. Consistent with previous findings in prolonged migraine aura, perfusion computed tomography demonstrated left-hemispheric hyperperfusion on day 7. 18F-FDG positron emission tomograph

Accuracy of clinical evaluation of locally advanced breast cancer in patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Physical examination (PE), mammography (MG), breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET), and pathologic evaluation are used to assess primary breast cancer. To the authors' knowledge, their accuracy has not been well studied in patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Accuracies of each modality in tumor and lymph node assessment in patients with T3/T4 tumors receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy were compared. METHODS: Forty-five patients of a prospective clinical trial studying T3-T4M0 tumors were included. Patients received n

Malignant versus benign vertebral collapse: are new imaging techniques useful?

Benign and malignant vertebral collapse is common in the middle-aged and elderly population. Differential diagnosis sometimes remains difficult using radiographs, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) if strong edema is present. Established morphological criteria and new methods such as positron emission tomography (PET)-CT and diffusion and perfusion MRI are helpful for the correct diagnosis. Increased fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake accounts for the neoplastic cause of a fracture. Hyperintensity on diffusion-weighted images and a high plasma flow also are associated w

PET/CT colonography: a novel non-invasive technique for assessment of extent and activity of ulcerative colitis.

PURPOSE: Extent of involvement and activity of ulcerative colitis (UC) is best evaluated by colonoscopy. Colonoscopy however carries risk during acute exacerbation. We investigated the utility of PET/CT colonography for assessment of extent and activity of UC. METHODS: Within a 1-week window, 15 patients with mild to moderately active UC underwent colonoscopy and PET/CT colonography 60 min after injection of 10 mCi of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). PET activity score based on the amount of FDG uptake and endoscopic mucosal activity in seven colonic segments of each patient was recorded. The

(18)F-FDG PET versus (18)F-FDG PET/CT for adrenal gland lesion characterization: a comparison of diagnostic efficacy in lung cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic efficacy of integrated PET/CT using fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) for the differentiation of benign and metastatic adrenal gland lesions in patients with lung cancer and to compare the diagnostic efficacy with the use of PET alone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one adrenal lesions (size range, 5-104 mm; mean size, 16 mm) were evaluated retrospectively in 42 lung cancer patients. Both PET images alone and integrated PET/CT images were assessed, respectively, at two-month intervals. PET findings were interpreted as positive if the FDG upta
