The occurrence of hepatic porphyrias--acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) and variegate porphyria (VP)--in Finland has been studied. During a period of 9 years 107 patients with AIP and 45 patients with VP were found. The prevalence of hereditary hepatic porphyrias was calculated to be 3.4 per 100 000 inhabitants. The patients belonged to 42 different families. Eighty-nine patients (59%) had had acute attacks, whereas 63 were symptomless latent cases. Precipitating factors, symptoms and excretion of porphyrins and their precursors did not significantly differ from what has been reported earlier

Among 211 patients undergoing gastroduodenoscopy five had been carriers of Australia antigen. The same instrument had been used on all, and follow-up examination was carried out two and four months after the gastroscopy. Twelve patients died during the follow-up period of their original disease. Two additional patients became Australia-antigen positive. One of these had liver cirrhosis. In the other, surgery with multiple infusions of albumin had been carried out after gastroscopy and could have been the cause of the Australia-antigen transmission. No proven case of hepatitis transmission occu…

The hepatic lesion in Reye's syndrome (acute encephalopathy with fatty degeneration of viscera) was studied by light microscopy of sequential biopsy specimens obtained in 49 children. The hepatic lesion is a morphologically characteristic, rapidly evolving, and reversible toxic hepatitis. In specimens obtained with 48 hr of onset of neurological deterioration, the severity of the diffuse microvesicular steatosis is best appreciated in frozen sections stained for lipid content. Variation in severity of hepatocyte glycogen depletion in early biopsies correlates with other histological measures o…
