In this prospective study, 24 patients with smoldering acute granulocytic leukemia received no specific treatment. Median survival duration from diagnosis was 9.29 months. Fourteen patients died of infection, four died of hemorrhage, two (8%) progressed to aggressive acute leukemia, and three remain alive at 36, 32, and 10 months. No survival predictions could be made from the severity of leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, or both. Neither sepsis nor hemorrhage, as causes of death, segregated into short- or long-term survivors (9.0 and 8.75 months' median survival, respectively). Thirteen patients

34 subjects with 36 obstetrical paralysis of the brachial plexus were studied. The diagnosis was made immediately after birth in the great majority. 5 pareses of the lower plexus, however, were only recognized later. All subjects were first seen by us under the age of 13 years, 25 during the first year of life. A group of patients with retinal breaks without detachment were analyzed. They were divided into a treatment and a nontreatment group. The treatment group consisted of cases that the authors felt to be at high risk for the development of retinal detachment. Most of these were cases of horseshoe tears following the onset of an acute posterior vitreous detachment. Although a number of modalities were used in the treatment, a transconjunctival cryotherapy approach with topical anesthetic drops is currently used and was the most frequently employed. The natural history of chronic aortic valve disease is well known from non-invasive data, but invasive data documenting the natural course of this disease are lacking. We studied hemodynamic data of 45 patients who had chronic aortic valve disease and were in functional class III or IV. Epidemiologic studies show a lower frequency of fibrocystic breast disease among users of oral contraceptives than among women who have never used them. Family history of breast cancer appears to be more common among benign breast disease patients than among their controls. Discrete fibromembranous subaortic stenosis may be severe at birth, progress in severity irrespective of the initial degree of obstruction, and morphologically change during the course of its natural history. To define better the natural history of bacteriuria in females, we followed 60 schoolgirls with bacteriuria and 38 matched controls for periods ranging from nine to 18 years. Among the schoolgirls with bacteriuria (greater than or equal to 10(5) organisms per milliliter in two or more consecutive cultures), reflux was repaired in five, nephrectomy was performed in two, and reduced inulin clearance was noted in one subject with atrophic pyelonephritis. Of 400 patients with the diagnosis of neurofibromatosis on their hospital records, 141 actually had the disease.
