Recent advances in infections as risk factors for lymphoma: a review of the effects of viral, bacterial, and fungal infections in lymphoma.

Lymphomas, a significant cause of cancer morbidity worldwide, are primarily classified as Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) or non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL). The most prevalent are B-cell lymphomas, such as Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL). A well-established body of research links a range of infections to developing these cancers. Researchers summarized current knowledge on the role of viral (e.g., Epstein-Barr virus, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis viruses), bacterial (e.g., Helicobacter pylori, Chlamydia psittaci), and fungal pathogens in lymphomagenesis. Fungal infections, while not direct c…

Environmental risk factors for Toxoplasma gondii infections and the impact of latent infections on allostatic load in residents of Central North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii infection can be acquired through ingestion of infectious tissue cysts in undercooked meat or environmental oocysts excreted by cats. This cross-sectional study assessed environmental risk factors for T. gondii infections and an association between latent infections and a measure of physiologic dysregulation known as allostatic load. METHODS: Serum samples from 206 adults in the Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina area were tested for immunoglobulin (IgG) responses to T. gondii using commercial ELISA kits. Allostatic load was estimated as a sum of 15 serum biomark…

Does Nasal Carriage of Staphylococcus aureus Increase the Risk of Postoperative Infections After Elective Spine Surgery: Do Most Infections Occur in Carriers?

BACKGROUND: Wound infections after adult spinal deformity surgery place a high toll on patients, providers, and the healthcare system. Staphylococcus aureus is a common cause of postoperative wound infections, and nasal colonization by this organism may be an important factor in the development of surgical site infections (SSIs). The aim is to investigate whether post-operative surgical site infections after elective spine surgery occur at a higher rate in patients with methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) nasal colonization. METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing adult spinal deformity s…

Rapid Diagnosis of Infection in the Critically Ill, a Multicenter Study of Molecular Detection in Bloodstream Infections, Pneumonia, and Sterile Site Infections.

OBJECTIVE: Early identification of causative microorganism(s) in patients with severe infection is crucial to optimize antimicrobial use and patient survival. However, current culture-based pathogen identification is slow and unreliable such that broad-spectrum antibiotics are often used to insure coverage of all potential organisms, carrying risks of overtreatment, toxicity, and selection of multidrug-resistant bacteria. We compared the results obtained using a novel, culture-independent polymerase chain reaction/electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry technology with those obtained by stan

A collaborative, systems-level approach to eliminating healthcare-associated MRSA, central-line-associated bloodstream infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and respiratory virus infections.

To achieve sustainable reductions in healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) deployed a collaborative, systems-level initiative. With the sponsorship of senior leadership, multidisciplinary teams were established to address healthcare-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), central-line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI), ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), and respiratory virus infections. The goal of the initiative was to eliminate these four HAIs among medical center inpatients by 2012. In the first 24 mon…

The efficacy of an ivermectin/closantel injection against experimentally induced infections and field infections with gastrointestinal nematodes and liver fluke in cattle.

Three studies were performed to test the efficacy of an ivermectin/closantel injection (200 microg/kg(-1) ivermectin and 5 mg/kg(-1) closantel) in cattle. Two were experimentally induced infections of Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia oncophora and Fasciola hepatica in calves, and the third had natural field infections in cattle with several species of gastrointestinal nematodes and F. hepatica. In the two studies with artificial infections, four groups of 8 calves were used. All calves were infected with metacercariae on Day 0. Infection with the nematodes took place on Day 33 in groups 1 and 2 …

Exposure to suppressive antibiotic therapy in women with recurrent urinary tract infections and severity of infections: a retrospective population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Women with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) often undergo intensive antibiotic exposure, especially with suppressive therapies. Suppressive therapy is recommended for women with three UTIs in the past year or two in the last 6 months. However, the collateral long-term effects of this have been poorly studied. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether suppressive therapy for recurrent UTIs increases the incidence and severity of future infections compared with episodic UTI treatment. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: The study was conducted using data fro…

T-Cell Receptor Sequences Identify Combined Coxsackievirus-Streptococci Infections as Triggers for Autoimmune Myocarditis and Coxsackievirus-Clostridia Infections for Type 1 Diabetes.

Recent research suggests that T-cell receptor (TCR) sequences expanded during human immunodeficiency virus and SARS-CoV-2 infections unexpectedly mimic these viruses. The hypothesis tested here is that TCR sequences expanded in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and autoimmune myocarditis (AM) mimic the infectious triggers of these diseases. Indeed, TCR sequences mimicking coxsackieviruses, which are implicated as triggers of both diseases, are statistically significantly increased in both T1DM and AM patients. However, TCRs mimicking Clostridia antigens are significantly expanded i…

Influence of urinary tract infections on the incidence of surgical site infections following hip fracture surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The prevalence of surgical site infections (SSIs) following hip fracture surgery poses a substantial challenge, compounding patient morbidity and healthcare costs. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigate the potential correlation between perioperative urinary tract infections (UTIs) and the subsequent risk of SSIs, aiming to illuminate the impact of UTIs on postoperative outcomes in this vulnerable population. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, utilising the PICO framework to define our search strategy across Pub…
