The authors present a case of malakoplakia, involving colon, rectum, bladder and retroperitoneum. This rare pathology, generally associated to Escherichia coli infections, result in a granulomatous disease, that can involve one or more organs. Nowadays, it is believed that the illness is due to a failure in the bactericide activity of the macrophage. This case, the first reported in our country, was treated clinically with ascorbic acid and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and is also unique in the world literature.

The determination of hydrogen in exhaled air by gas chromatography was used for investigation of patients with relapsing diarrhea of various genesis. The anthelminthic agents chloxylum and prasiquantel were examined for their effects in patients with an above 5-year history of Opisthorchis invasion. The van de Kamer procedure revealed that chloxylum produced an inhibitory effect on absorption of d-xylose and fat. Prasiquantel failed to impair the absorptive function of the small intestine. Helminthological curing in patients with chronic opisthorchiasis was not shown to normalize dysfunction of the small intestine.

We report 2 new cases of intestinal metastases from lung cancer. Such metastases are not exceptional, but their clinical manifestations are rare and their diagnosis during evaluation of lung cancer is difficult. This diagnosis could be suggested by the presence of iron deficiency anaemia or melena in a patient being investigated for lung cancer. Other metastases are often present, and the prognosis is fatal at short term.

The effect of chronic dietary antigen challenge on the intestine was examined in sensitized rats. Three groups of Hooded-Lister rats were studied: animals sensitized to egg albumin; sham-sensitized animals; and unmanipulated controls. The migration of intestinal intervillous epithelial cells labeled in the fetus was followed in neonatal mice. At 17 days of gestation, a first group of pregnant mice received three intraperitoneal injections of 3H-thymidine (150 microCi/injection) administered at 30 min intervals. Haematological and biochemical studies were done for 50 urban and rural Egyptians, from Cairo, suffering from A. duodenale, A. lumbricoides, E. vermicularis, H. nana, S. mansoni and T. saginata. Anaemia of varying degree was noticed in all cases. The lowest Hb% and hematocrit value were found in cases of ancylostomiasis. The blood films of the same patients showed severe hypochromia compared with the other parasitic infections. Some strains of mice are known to be relatively resistant to hepatic or intestinal amebic infections. In order to know if the intestinal resistance is expressed few hours after infection, we inoculated axenic amebae in three inbred strains of mice either by direct intracecal injection or by infection of a washed-closed cecal loop. Results are reported of a study of the incretory function in 156 patients with acute intestinal infections. The incretory pancreatic function was found to be deranged in most patients in the acute period and tended to slow restoration during convalescence. This indicates the necessity of perfecting pathogenetic treatment of these patients and clinico-laboratory follow-up of patients with a history of acute intestinal infection with consideration of the incretory pancreatic function.
