OBJECTIVE: Pernicious anemia (PA) develops from atrophic gastritis due to autoimmune destruction of parietal cells and results in achlorhydria, vitamin B12 and iron deficiencies, anemia, neurologic deficits, and premalignant and malignant stomach lesions. BACKGROUND: The bone marrow iron study is the gold standard for differentiation of the two most common causes of anemia i.e. iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and anemia of chronic disease (ACD) in the elderly. However, it is often not feasible to do bone marrow examination (BME) in every elderly anemic patient, due to its invasive nature. Hepcidin, a liver-derived peptide, has been identified as the key systemic regulator of iron homeostasis. Ischemic stroke is associated with high mortality and morbidity rates worldwide. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the neuronal damage incurred by stroke victims remain unclear. It has previously been reported that ischemic stroke can induce an increase in the levels of brain iron, which is an important factor of in the associated brain damage. Ferroportin 1 (FPN1), the only known cellular iron export protein, is found in brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMVECs) at the blood-brain barrier, and is considered the gateway for entry of plasma iron into the central nervous system.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether prenatal risk factors (RFs) that predict cord blood iron status in term newborns also predict iron status of premature newborns.
STUDY DESIGN: Cord blood iron indices from 80 preterm newborns were compared with historical and demographic RFs for developing iron deficiency if born at term.
RESULT: The presence of multiple RFs did not incrementally interfere with cord iron status in preterm newborns. Poorer iron status accompanied being small for gestational age in prematurity, but other RFs, including diabetes, had relatively little impact.

METHODS: This is a retrospective study of obstetric patients from the Charleston Area Medical Center Women's Medicine Center, a clinic at Women and Children's Hospital. Data were collected on Women's Medicine Center patients who delivered at Women and Children's Hospital during a 1-year interval, through chart review linked with hospital database and birth certificate data for comorbidities.
