Para-articular fusion of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the hand.
The para-articular procedure for the arthrodesis of an interphalangeal joint is more reliable, rapid and simpler than intra-articular fusion. The position is easily maintained, and therefore one has no difficulty with approximating the flexion and rotational angles. Since a large dead space is not produced in carrying out the procedure, use of a compressing force for adequate surface contact is not necessary. Shortening of the finger is not a hazard. A Kirschner wire is used in the technique described, which gives good protection for the graft and keeps the joint in the desired position withou
