A rare case of carotid artery injury during maggot debridement therapy for locally advanced parotid gland carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) is a treatment for chronic ulcers that involves using live larvae to debride the wound. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of serious arterial bleeding in the cervical region in a 52-year-old woman who was hospitalized in Iran for a malignant ulcer of the retro-auricular area. The patient was brought to the hospital by Emergency medical service due to severe hemorrhagic shock. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Debridement is a commonly used method for wound management, aimed at reducing the risk of infection and removing ulcer debridement. Se…

Larvicidal activity of hexane extract, fatty acids, and methyl esters from Tecoma stans pericarps against Culex quinquefasciatus.

Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) is responsible for the transmission of lymphatic filariasis. The search for natural sources of new insecticides to control mosquitoes has intensified in recent years. Tecoma stans is an exotic species in Brazil, known as 'ipê de jardim'. T. stans pericarps were extracted with hexane in Soxhlet apparatus, and fatty acids (FA) and methyl esters (FAME) were obtained by transesterification reaction of hexane extract (HE). HE, FA, and FAME were evaluated against 3rd. and 4th. instar larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus. Analysis by gas chromatography-mass spe…

A case of severe hookworm infection.

With the improvement of sanitation, the infection rate of hookworm is greatly reduced and the severe infected case is rarely reported. Combined morphological and molecular biological examinations, a severe hookworm infection patient was diagnosed in Department of Laboratorial Examination, Quanzhou First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University. The morphological methods such as direct fecal smear microscopy, saturated brine flotation and hookworm larvae culture methods were used to identify the eggs and larvae from stool samples of the patient. There were a large number of hookworm egg…

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome with cerebral involvement.

Strongyloidiasis is a disease caused by the intestinal helminth Strongyloides stercoralis When the immune system of infected individuals is compromised, larvae may migrate from the gastrointestinal tract to other tissues, causing S. stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome, which has a reported mortality of 71%. In this case, we report a patient with S. stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome with central nervous system (CNS) involvement. An elderly South East Asian male tourist presented with pulmonary symptoms, fever and infiltrates on chest X-ray. He later developed symptoms of CNS infection. S. ste…

Entangling the Enemy: Ecological, Systematic, and Medical Implications of Dermestid Beetle Hastisetae.

Hastisetae are modified setae typical of Dermestidae Megatominae and are a primary defensive tool of both larvae and pupae against invertebrates and possibly vertebrates. Given their unique morphological features, hastisetae have recently been suggested as an additional character useful for larvae identification and possible source of information to clarify the systematics of Megatominae. Hastisetae are also recognized as important contaminants of stored products, work and living environment; in particular, the exposure to hastisetae seems to cause allergic reactions and the insurgence of skin…

Distribution and potential toxicity of benthic harmful dinoflagellates in waters of Florida Bay and the Florida Keys.

Few studies have been carried out on benthic dinoflagellates along the Florida Keys, and little is known about their distribution or toxicity in Florida Bay. Here, the distribution and abundance of benthic dinoflagellates was explored in northern and eastern Florida Bay and along the bay and ocean sides of the Florida Keys. Isolates were brought into culture and their toxicity was tested with oyster larvae bioassays. Seven genera were detected, including Prorocentrum, Coolia, Ostreopsis, Amphidinium, Gambierdiscus, Fukuyoa (all included potentially toxic species) and Sinophysis. In general, di…

Human Outbreak of Trichinellosis Caused by Trichinella papuae Nematodes, Central Kampong Thom Province, Cambodia.

In September 2017, a severe trichinellosis outbreak occurred in Cambodia after persons consumed raw wild pig meat; 33 persons were infected and 8 died. We collected and analyzed the medical records for 25 patients. Clinical signs and symptoms included myalgia, facial or peripheral edema, asthenia, and fever. We observed increased levels of creatine phosphokinase and aspartate aminotransferase-, as well as eosinophilia. Histopathologic examination of muscle biopsy specimens showed nonencapsulated Trichinella larvae. A Trichinella excretory/secretory antigen ELISA identified Trichinella IgM and …

Inherent biomechanical traits enable infective filariae to disseminate through collecting lymphatic vessels.

Filariases are diseases caused by arthropod-borne filaria nematodes. The related pathologies depend on the location of the infective larvae when their migration, the asymptomatic and least studied phase of the disease, comes to an end. To determine factors assisting in filariae dissemination, we image Litomosoides sigmodontis infective larvae during their escape from the skin. Burrowing through the dermis filariae exclusively enter pre-collecting lymphatics by mechanical disruption of their wall. Once inside collectors, their rapid and unidirectional movement towards the lymph node is supporte…

Suprasellar Cysticercosis Cyst with Optic Nerve Compression Masquerading as an Arachnoid Cyst.

Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection caused by the larvae of the cestode Taenia solium. Ocular parasitosis in humans is well recognized; however, cysticercosis of the optic nerve is rare. Here, we report a case of an adult male who presented with right-sided headache and a gradual loss of vision in the right eye. Optical coherence tomography indicated severe loss of ganglion cells in the right eye. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a predominantly suprasellar cystic lesion thought to represent an arachnoid cyst. We performed a craniotomy to excise the cyst. Histopathological examination of t…

The epidemiology of trichinellosis in the Arctic territories of a Far Eastern District of the Russian Federation.

Trichinellosis, a zoonotic disease caused by nematodes of the genus Trichinella, is still a public health concern in the Arctic. The aims of this study were to investigate the seroprevalence of anti-Trichinella IgG in aboriginal peoples of two settlements in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug (Russian Federation) on the Arctic coast of the Bering Sea, and to evaluate the survival of Trichinella nativa larvae in local fermented and frozen meat products. A seroprevalence of 24.3% was detected in 259 people tested by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The highest prevalence was detected amo…

Canine myiasis by Lucilia eximia in North America.

Myiasis is the invasion of Diptera larvae in live vertebrates tissues. It has been registered in tropical areas, but not in urban animals of North America. Moreover, there is no information about lesions description, laboratory tests, and treatment applied to canines. We report a myiasis located in the dorsum of an overweight male canine. Insect larvae were identified as Lucilia eximia, an opportunistic species that scarcely infest live vertebrates, and with no records in North America animals before. Abnormalities of complete blood count like leukocytosis by neutrophilia and serum biochemical…

Efficacy of chemical repellents against Otobius megnini (Acari: Argasidae) and three species of ixodid ticks.

Otobius megnini (Dugès), often referred to as the ear tick or spinose ear tick, is a one-host tick native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. Infestations of this species can cause severe irritation and may affect breeding behavior in the host. Although chemical repellents are commonly used as an alternative approach to conventional arthropod vector control, information on repellency against O. megnini is lacking. This study compared repellency of ammonia, BioUD(®), 98.25% DEET, garlic pepper tea, permanone, and pyrethrin with piperonyl butoxide, against larvae stages of O. megnini, …

Strongyloides stercoralis genotypes in humans in Cambodia.

Little is known about the genetic variability of the soil-transmitted nematode, Strongyloides stercoralis, in humans. We sequenced portions of the small subunit rDNA (SSU), including the hyper variable regions (HVR) I and IV from S. stercoralis larvae derived from individuals living in a rural setting in Cambodia. We identified three polymorphic positions, including a previously reported one within the HVR I. HVR IV was invariable. Six different SSU alleles existed in our sample. Although different genotypes of S. stercoralis were found in the same individuals, no heterozygous larvae were foun…

Oral myiasis--a case report.

Myiasis, a term introduced by William Hope in 1840, refers to the invasion of tissues and organs of animals and human wounds and certain body cavities by the dipteran larvae, which manifests as subcutaneous furunculoid or boil-like lesions. Oral myiasis is a rare pathology and a risk to the patient's life. A higher incidence is seen in rural areas, affecting the tropical and subtropical zones of Africa and America. It can be secondary to medical or anatomic conditions, such as cancrum oris, neglected mandibular fracture, cerebral palsy, mouth breathing, anterior open bite, incompetent lips, an…

Effects of sediment containing coal ash from the Kingston ash release on embryo-larval development in the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas (Rafinesque, 1820).

The largest environmental release of coal ash in US history occurred in December 2008 with the failure of a retention structure at the Tennessee Valley Authority Kingston Fossil Fuel Plant in East Tennessee. A byproduct of coal-burning power plants, coal ash is enriched in metals and metalloids such as selenium and arsenic with known toxicity to fish embryonic and larval life stages. The early development of fish embryos and larvae during contact exposures to river bottom sediments containing up to 78 % coal ash from the Kingston spill was examined in 7-day laboratory tests with the fathead mi…

Cercarial dermatitis, a neglected allergic disease.

Cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch) is a common non-communicable water-borne disease. It is caused by penetration of the skin by larvae (cercariae) of schistosomatid flukes and develops as a maculopapular skin eruption after repeated contacts with the parasites. The number of outbreaks of the disease is increasing, and cercarial dermatitis can therefore be considered as an emerging problem. Swimmer's itch is mostly associated with larvae of the bird schistosomes of Trichobilharzia spp. Recent results have shown that mammalian infections (including man) manifest themselves as an allergic reac…
