Penetrating neck injuries constitute 5-10% of all trauma cases. These injuries may cause life-threatening suppurative or vascular complications, but the severity and extent of damage depends upon the inflicting object and the involved structures. If significant complications are not expected, then it is best to leave the foreign body embedded and avoid surgical risks. We present a rare case of a foreign body embedded in the neck causing tinnitus and foreign body sensation.

Liposomes incorporating porphyrin-phospholipid (PoP) can be formulated to release entrapped contents in response to near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. Here, we examine effects of chelating copper or zinc into the PoP. BACKGROUND: Exposure to PM2.5 (particulate matter<2.5 μm) has been associated with changes in endothelial function. PM2.5 was collected from two Chinese cities, Jinchang (JC) and Zhangye (ZH), both with similar PM2.5 concentrations. However, JC had levels of nickel (Ni), selenium (Se), copper (Cu), and arsenic (As) that were 76, 25, 17, and 7 fold higher than that measured in ZH, respectively. We used this unique PM sample to delineate the chemical components that drive pulmonary and systemic effects and explore the mechanism(s) by which vascular dysfunction is caused.

Novel conditions for the transformation of gem-dibromomethylenes to ketones are described. gem-Dibromo compounds were treated with acetic anhydride and triethylamine in dichloromethane/water at room temperature under an air atmosphere to give the corresponding ketones in moderate yields. This study presents the total concentrations and chemical fractionations of metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Fe, and Mn) in 54 surface sediment samples collected from the Huaihe River (Anhui Province) in eastern China.
