A probable case of congenital syphilis from 18th century Vienna.

Archaeological excavation of a historic cemetery in Vienna, Austria, dating to the Josephinian period (CE 1765-1790) yielded a likely case of congenital syphilis. The individual displays intensive alteration of the permanent and deciduous dentition such as the mulberry molar and a tapered, fang-like canine. Traits rarely documented in paleopathological literature such as unnotched Hutchinson's incisors or pitting on the base of the cusps of deciduous second molars complement the finding. The present contribution describes this first probable case of congenital syphilis from Central Europe base…

Regional odontodysplasia. Report of two cases.

Two cases of regional odontodysplasia in girls are reported; one affected the lower incisors, and the other the left maxilla. The first case was radiographically followed over a 6-year period, during which time the ghost teeth exhibited significant dentin formation, along with a resultant decrease in pulp size and relative normalization of the radicular anatomy. The second case involved the deciduous molars and the first permanent molar. In addition to tooth alterations, both cases exhibited many odontogenic epithelial islands and extensive areas of calcification in the mucosa. Diagnosis, caus…

Prepubertal diagnosis of Klinefelter syndrome in a patient with taurodontic teeth.

A 9-year, 10-month-old male presented for dental treatment planning for multiple missing permanent teeth. Panoramic radiographs revealed taurodontic permanent first molars and primary second molars. The patient was of slim build with a long lower body and moderately long fingers. Because of the presence of taurodontic teeth, chromosomal analysis was done and revealed 47,XXY - Klinefelter syndrome. Patients with meso- or hypertaurodontic teeth who do not have a syndrome known to be associated with taurodontic teeth should be considered for chromosome analysis because of the high association of …

Dental and bone abnormalities in patients with familial polyposis coli.

Dental and bone abnormalities of the maxilla and mandible are present in approximately 80% of patients with familial polyposis coli. The dental abnormalities include impacted teeth (other than third molars), supernumerary teeth, congenitally missing teeth, fused roots of first and second molars, and unusually long and tapered roots of posterior teeth. The bone lesions consist mostly of osteomas, either isolated or in clusters, in the maxilla and mandible or of exostoses with lateral and/or lingual extensions. Since dental and bone abnormalities are already present early in life there is a stro…

Effect of extraction in the late mixed dentition on the eruption of the first premolar in Macaca nemestrina.

The effect of deciduous tooth extraction in the late mixed dentition on the eruption of succedaneous teeth was studied in ten Macaca nemestrina. Nineteen deciduous teeth were extracted: nine maxillary and ten mandibular left deciduous first molars. Regardless of sex, arch, chronologic or dental age, all first premolars on the experimental side erupted before those on the control side and this pattern was statistically significant. Extraction of deciduous molars in the late mixed dentition is seen to accelerate eruption of first premolars in Macaca nemestrina. This could be the result of elimin…

Mitochondrial granule distribution in tooth germ cells.

Incisor and molar tooth germs of albino rats sacrificed at the eighteenth and twentieth days in utero and one to seven days after birth were studied with light and electron microscopy. Observations of the various stages of tooth development in molars established that intramitochondrial granules in odontoblasts were comparable to the intramitochondrial granules of other hard tissue cells. These electron-dense deposits appeared in mitochondria in an appreciable number only when odontoblasts become engaged in dentin mineralization. When dentin mineralization was advanced the odontoblast mitochond…

Karyotype, Pedigree and cone-beam computerized tomography analysis of a case of nonsyndromic pandental anomalies.

This case report presented a karyotype and pedigree analysis of a case with unusual combination of dental anomalies: Generalized short roots, talon cusps, dens invagination, low alveolar bone heights, very prominent cusp of carabelli and protostylid on first permanent molars, taurodontism of second permanent molars, rotated, missing and impacted teeth. None of the anomalies alone are rare. However, until date, nonsyndromic pandental anomalies that are affecting entire dentition with detailed karyotype, pedigree and cone-beam computerized tomography analysis have not been reported. The occurren…

To retrieve or not to retrieve the coronectomy root--the clinical dilemma.

UNLABELLED: Coronectomy of mandibular third molars is a well established technique that is going through a resurgence as it seems to reduce the risk of inferior dental nerve (IDN) injury. The reservation with the technique arises because of fear that the retained root will become infected and symptomatic over time. General dental practitioners will be responsible for the long-term review and care of these patients and, consequently, it is important that they are aware of the technique and its sequelae. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Coronectomy of mandibular third molars to avoid nerve injury is becomin…

Oral aspects of 49, XXXXY syndrome: a case report.

The 49, XXXXY syndrome is a rare chromosomal disorder. The purpose of this paper was to present the case of a 9-year-old boy with this karyotype. The most remarkable skeletal and dental anomalies were the absence of 9 permanent teeth, taurodontism of the permanent first molars, and the conical shape of permanent maxillary lateral incisors. Third molars were not visualized. Cephalometric analysis revealed a well-positioned maxilla, a slightly protruding mandible, and retroclined mandibular incisors. The surgery and dental rehabilitation are described. Given the specific characteristics of this …

The orthodontic management of congenitally absent maxillary lateral incisors and second premolars: a case report.

The orthodontic management of congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors and second premolars is the subject of this case report. The primary orthodontic consideration was the maintenance of facial esthetics in a 12-year-old boy while consolidating, aligning, and coordinating the dental arches. The maxillary canines were orthodontically positioned in the lateral incisor spaces. The maxillary posterior teeth, including the deciduous second molars, were protracted to esthetic positions where they could function without interferences. The stability of the occlusion depends on the longevity o…

[Alveolar bone remodelling following orthodontic tooth movement in aged rats. An animal experimental study].

Orthodontic tooth movement of upper first molars was performed in twelve aged (500 days old) rats. It was demonstrated by histomorphologic findings as well as by vital polychrome staining that the remodelling process of the periodontal tissues in the aged animals was qualitatively similar to that in younger ones. The first molar in all animals was tipped mesially, while its mesial root was intruded. According to the vital polychrome staining the bone formation rate at the mesio-apical bone surface of the mesial root was determined as 7-8 microns per day. After 14 days comprehensive root resorp…

Treatment of a pseudo-class III relationship in the primary dentition: a case history.

In conclusion, posterior and anterior crossbites of the primary dentition should be corrected, once recognized, to allow for normal dental base development and subsequent favorable skeletal growth, provided the analysis of the case reveals no gross boney discrepancies. To quiet any archaic ideas of delaying posterior crossbite correction until the eruption of the permanent first molars, a pilot is being undertaken to determine whether there is a statistical difference in the need for retreatment of patients, when the permanent first molars erupt with the use of either the Porter, Quadhelix, or…

An assessment of Andresen therapy on class II division 1 malocclusion.

The cephalometric radiographs of 29 Class II division 1 cases treated with the Andresen appliance were assessed and compared with those of 19 untreated Class II division 1 cases. The findings do not support the opinion that the Andresen appliance influences the growth of the skeletal structures of the maxilla and mandible. The overjet was reduced by lingual tipping of the maxillary incisors, whilst the overbite was reduced by increased eruption of both the maxillary and mandibular molars. Associated with this was a small improvement in molar relationship. The amount of lower incisor proclinati…

Thirteen-year-old boy with dentinogenesis imperfecta - pedodontic and orthodontic treatment.

Dentinogenesis imperfecta is a hereditary condition characterized by disturbance in tooth formation. The colour of the teeth vary from opalescent greyish-blue to an amber-like colour on the teeth with splitting of the enamel. On the roentgenogram the marked obliteration of the pulp chambers is a characteristic feature. This case report describe a 13-year-old boy with dentinogenesis imperfecta. High caries activity resulted in extensive caries on the first permanent molars. The boy had to be treated orthodontically to create acceptable occlusion. The treatment was carried out with fixed applian…

Impact of Varying Bi2O3 and ZnO Concentrations on the Structural, Optical, and Radiation Shielding Properties of B2O3-PbO-ZnO-Bi2O3 Glasses.

The study prepared B2O3-PbO-ZnO-Bi2O3 glasses via melt quenching. With increasing Bi2O3 and ZnO concentrations, there was an increase in density from 5.686 to 6.262 g·cm-3, and the molar mass from 214.702 to 239.187 g·mol-1. This led to a 66.208 to 62.309 oxygen packing density decrease and a 15.104 to 16.049 cm3·mol-1 and 0.844 to 0.925 oxygen molar volume, and optical basicity increase, respectively. Mechanical properties showed slight improvements, with Young's, shear, and longitudinal moduli increasing marginally. A 2.764 to 2.730 eV band gap energy decrease was observed, alongside a modes…

Neuroimaging Characteristics as Diagnostic Tools in Joubert Syndrome and Related Disorders: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Joubert syndrome and related disorders (JSRD) present diagnostic challenges due to their varied clinical features. Neuroimaging, particularly MRI and CT, is critical for identifying the distinctive "molar tooth sign" and other neuroanatomical abnormalities. This case report and literature review emphasize the role of neuroimaging in diagnosing JSRD. Our search targeted pediatric cases with terms like "Joubert anomaly" and "diagnostic imaging." Key findings include cerebellar vermal agenesis, ataxia, developmental delay, and oculomotor apraxia. Cognitive impairment ranges widely, complicating a…
