Intestinal MAdCAM-1 imaging as biomarker for prognostic in murine models of multiple sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. Recent evidence suggests that lymphocyte trafficking in the intestines could play a key role in its etiology. Nevertheless, it is not clear how intestinal tissue is involved in the disease onset nor its evolution. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate intestinal inflammation dynamic throughout the disease course and its potential impact on disease progression. METHODS: We used tissue immunophenotyping (immunohistofluorescence and flow cytometry) and a recently described molecular magnetic resona…

Serum lipids and cognitive outcomes in multiple sclerosis; a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is highly prevalent in multiple sclerosis (MS) with poorly understood underlying mechanisms. Lipids are considered to be associated with MS progression through the inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways, brain atrophy, cellular signaling, and tissue physiology. In addition, serum lipids are proposed as a modifiable factor affecting the neuropsychiatric condition; therefore, this study aims to assess the association between serum lipid levels and cognitive outcomes in MS. METHODS: This study was carried out following the PRISMA 2020 statement. A systematic …

Patient level dataset to study the effect of COVID-19 in people with Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, causing increased vulnerability to infections and disability among young adults. Ever since the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infections, there have been concerns among people with MS (PwMS) about the potential interactions between various disease-modifying therapies and COVID-19. The COVID-19 in MS Global Data Sharing Initiative (GDSI) was initiated in 2020 with the aim of addressing these concerns. This paper focuses on the …

The Role of Diet in Multiple Sclerosis Onset: A Prospective Study Using UK Biobank.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating autoimmune condition primarily affecting young adults, and its rise is evident globally. Despite this, its precise etiology remains elusive. Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to MS susceptibility; however, the link between diet and MS lacks substantial evidence due to limited large-scale studies. We exploited the UK Biobank resources to explore the nexus between diet, lifestyle, and MS risk. The dietary and lifestyle habits of MS incident cases, derived from a general food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) completed by all participants at s…

Investigating disparities in smoking cessation treatment for veterans with multiple sclerosis: A national analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Smoking is a risk factor for multiple sclerosis (MS) development, symptom burden, decreased medication efficacy, and increased disease-related mortality. Veterans with MS (VwMS) smoke at critically high rates; however, treatment rates and possible disparities are unknown. To promote equitable treatment, we aim to investigate smoking cessation prescription practices for VwMS across social determinant factors. METHODS: We extracted data from the national Veterans Health Administration electronic health records between October 1, 2017, and September 30, 2018. To derive margi…

First line therapy for multiple sclerosis: cytokine levels and the impact of herpesvirus infection

The effects of the disease modifying drugs (DMDs) for multiple sclerosis (MS), interferon beta (IFNβ) and glatiramer acetate (GA), on the cytokine levels of individuals with MS are poorly understood. The effects of persistent herpesvirus infection (PHVI) on the cytokine production during treatment with DMDs for MS have not been identified. The role of cytokines and PHVI in the development of the treatment-related adverse events (AEs) has not been determined. The study was aimed to assess serum cytokine levels in patients with MS treated or not treated with DMDs for MS, and to determine the rel…

Feasibility and tolerability of portable, low-field brain MRI for patients with multiple sclerosis.

Low-field, portable MRI (LF-MRI) promises to expand neuroimaging access for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). We aimed to measure the feasibility and tolerability of LF-MRI for clinical use in 50 people with MS (mean age 46.5 ± 15.3 years; 72 % female; median disease duration 5.9 years), 38 % of whom reported barriers to undergoing MRI, and 34 % of whom were low-income or unemployed. Experience ratings of LF-MRI were strongly positive (mean rating of 9.2 on a ten-point scale). Seventy percent of participants were willing to receive future LF-MRI scans, and 46 % preferred LF-MRI to standar…

Consensus recommendations for diagnosis and treatment of Multiple Sclerosis: 2023 revision of the MENACTRIMS guidelines.

With evolving diagnostic criteria and the advent of new oral and parenteral therapies for Multiple Sclerosis (MS), most current diagnostic and treatment algorithms need revision and updating. The diagnosis of MS relies on incorporating clinical and paraclinical findings to prove dissemination in space and time and exclude alternative diseases that can explain the findings at hand. The differential diagnostic workup should be guided by clinical and laboratory red flags to avoid unnecessary tests. Appropriate selection of MS therapies is critical to maximize patient benefit. The current guidelin…
