Emotion processing difficulties are observed in antisocial individuals exhibiting serious antisocial behavior. This study examined emotion processing in 40 male juvenile offenders (JOs) and 52 male controls by measuring startle reflex responses to aversive sounds during the passive viewing of affective and neutral images. JOs as a group exhibited reduced startle-elicited blinks across all slide categories compared to normal controls. Moreover, within the offender group those with more conduct disorder symptoms and higher levels of psychopathic traits displayed reduced startle amplitudes compar

Activation of several receptors, including mu-opioid, alpha 2-adrenergic, and neuropeptide Y receptors, inhibits excitatory nonadrenergic noncholinergic (NANC) neural responses in airways, which were mediated by the release of peptides from capsaicin-sensitive sensory nerves. This raises the possibility of a common inhibitory mechanism, which may be related to an increase in K+ conductance in sensory nerves. To examine this hypothesis, we have studied whether K(+)-channel blockers inhibit the effects of neuromodulators of sensory nerves in guinea pig bronchi by using selective K(+)-channel blo

UNLABELLED: The accessory olfactory system controls social and sexual behavior. However, key aspects of sensory signaling along the accessory olfactory pathway remain largely unknown. Here, we investigate patterns of spontaneous neuronal activity in mouse accessory olfactory bulb mitral cells, the direct neural link between vomeronasal sensory input and limbic output. Both in vitro and in vivo, we identify a subpopulation of mitral cells that exhibit slow stereotypical rhythmic discharge. In intrinsically rhythmogenic neurons, these periodic activity patterns are maintained in absence of fast

Surface modification of electrically conductive biomaterials has been studied to improve biocompatibility for a number of applications, such as implantable sensors and microelectrode arrays. In this study we electrochemically coated electrodes with biocompatible and non-cell adhesive hyaluronic acid (HA) to reduce cellular adhesion for potential use in neural prostheses. To this end, pyrrole-conjugated hyaluronic acid (PyHA) was synthesized and employed to electrochemically coat platinum, indium-tin oxide and polystyrene sulfonate-doped polypyrrole electrodes. This PyHA conjugate consisted of

We report a case of hearing rehabilitation following combined cochlear implantation and ossiculoplasty. A 71-year-old patient visited the clinic for right-sided mixed hearing loss. We targeted neural and conductive components, performing two different operations simultaneously. At two months post-operative, the patient showed satisfactory results with respect to hearing threshold and speech comprehension. Our experience suggests that careful evaluation of patients and consideration of the diverse array of available treatment strategies can be used to provide personalized rehabilitation with ma

BACKGROUND: Despite being one of the most common symptoms of schizophrenia, determining the neural correlates of auditory hallucinations still remains elusive with various studies providing inconsistent results.
METHODS: We conducted a voxel-based meta-analysis of studies investigating the structural correlates of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia.
RESULTS: 7 datasets including 350 patients were identified. There was a significant negative correlation between the severity of hallucinations and gray matter volume in the left insula and right superior temporal gyrus.
CONCLUSION: With i

The human ear is functionally mature shortly after birth, but the central auditory system continues to develop for at least the first decade of life. Current interest focuses on the relation between the very late developing aspects of hearing and other aspects of cognition and behaviour. While active neural input to the brain is essential during the very early stages of development, auditory experience is now thought to be a powerful influence on central function throughout an individual's lifespan. Studies of sound localization and hearing with two ears have shown the capacity of the auditory

Tinnitus has long been a problem which has plagued patients with otologic problems. We have been using biofeedback as a method of treatment for patients with severe debilitating type tinnitus. Most of the patients had sensori-neural type hearing impairment while a few had conductive hearing loss and normal hearing. The patients were given 10-12 one hour sessions of biofeedback training. They have been followed from 6 to 12 months after this initial training period. Over half of thondition. A few of the patients were dramatically improved while none are worse. Biofeedback has been shown to be a

BACKGROUND: The incidence of hemiparetic limb dysfunction reaches 85% in stroke patients, emerging as a critical factor influencing their daily lives. However, the effectiveness of current rehabilitation treatments is considerably limited, particularly in patients with upper extremity impairment. This study aims to conduct a prospective clinical trial to validate the safety and effectiveness of gamma oscillations induced by 40-Hz visual-auditory stimulation in treating post-stroke upper limb dysfunction and to explore the relevant mechanisms.
METHODS: This trial is a prospective, randomized c

Dysfunction in fear and stress responses is intrinsically linked to various neurological diseases, including anxiety disorders, depression, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Previous studies using in vivo models with Immediate-Extinction Deficit (IED) and Stress Enhanced Fear Learning (SEFL) protocols have provided valuable insights into these mechanisms and aided the development of new therapeutic approaches. However, assessing these dysfunctions in animal subjects using IED and SEFL protocols can cause significant pain and suffering. To advance the understanding of fear and stress, this st

INTRODUCTION: Beyond mood abnormalities, bipolar disorder (BD) includes cognitive impairments that worsen psychosocial functioning and quality of life. These deficits are especially severe in older adults with BD (OABD), a condition expected to represent most individuals with BD in the upcoming years. Restoring the psychosocial functioning of this population will thus soon represent a public health priority. To help tackle the problem, the Bipolar and Depressive Disorders Unit at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona has recently adapted its Functional Remediation (FR) program to that population, c

BACKGROUND: Motor imagery training (MIT) has been widely used to improve hemiplegic upper limb function in stroke rehabilitation. The effectiveness of MIT is associated with the functional neuroplasticity of the motor network. Currently, brain activation and connectivity changes related to the motor recovery process after MIT are not well understood.
AIM: We aimed to investigate the neural mechanisms of MIT in stroke rehabilitation through a longitudinal intervention study design with task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analysis.
METHODS: We recruited 39 stroke patients w

Early life radiation exposure causes abnormal brain development, leading to adult depression. However, few studies have been conducted to explore pre- or post-natal irradiation-induced depression-related neuropathological changes. Relevant molecular mechanisms are also poorly understood. We induced adult depression by irradiation of mice at postnatal day 3 (P3) to reveal hippocampal neuropathological changes and investigate their molecular mechanism, focusing on MicroRNA (miR) and its target mRNA and protein. P3 mice were irradiated by γ-rays with 5Gy, and euthanized at 1, 7 and 120 days after

Some common conductive polymers are polyfuran, polyacetylene, polythiophene, and poly-pyrrole. Since their discovery, many researchers have been exploring and evaluating their conductive and electronic properties. Various applications have been developed for conductive materials. Their biocompatibility offers a new alternative for studying and solving complex problems, such as cellular activity, or, more recently, for use as neural implants and as an alternative to spinal cord regenerative tissue. This is particularly true for the use of poly pyrrole. The main obstacle lies in estimating some

Advanced artificial nerve conduits offer a promising alternative for nerve injury repair. Current research focuses on improving the therapeutic effectiveness of nerve conduits by optimizing scaffold materials and functional components. In this study, a novel poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-integrated fish swim bladder (FSB) is presented as a conductive nerve conduit with ordered topology and electrical stimulation to promote nerve regeneration. PEDOT nanomaterials and adhesive peptides (IKVAV) are successfully incorporated onto the decellularized FSB substrate through pre-coating with

Conventional wet Ag/AgCl electrodes are widely used in electrocardiography, electromyography (EMG), and electroencephalography (EEG) and are considered the gold standard for biopotential measurements. However, these electrodes require substantial skin preparation, are single use, and cannot be used for continuous monitoring (>24 h). For these reasons, dry electrodes are preferable during surface electromyography (sEMG) due to their convenience, durability, and longevity. Dry conductive elastomers (CEs) combine conductivity, flexibility, and stretchability. In this study, CEs combining poly(3,4

Despite many of the studies being conducted, the electrospinning of poly (lactic acid) (PLA), dissolved in its common solvents, is difficult to be continuously processed for mass production. This is due to the polymer solution droplet drying. Besides, the poor stretching capability of the polymer solution limits the production of small diameter fibers. To address these issues, we have examined the two following objectives: first, using an appropriate solvent system for the mass production of fibrous mats with fine-tunable fiber diameters; second, nontoxicity of the mats towards Neural Stem Cel

Auditory brainstem response screening at 40 and 60 dB was conducted in 100 infants in the neonatal intensive care unit to determine initial failure rate and prevalence of abnormality on follow-up. Of our NICU population, 20% failed one or both of the screening levels: 9% failed at 60 dB in both ears, and 11% failed at 40 dB in one or both ears. On follow-up, half of the 60 dB failure group were found to have sensorineural or conductive impairment and represent the 2% to 4% prevalence of serious otologic-audiologic problems generally found in an NICU population.
