Factors predisposing to central corneal ulceration in a developing population.

Over a 1-year period all patients presenting to St John's Eye Hospital with corneal ulceration were studied. The local and general factors predisposing to central (primarily infective) corneal ulceration are discussed. Episodes of corneal trauma and climatic droplet keratopathy were the major local factors and these occurred against the background of a generally poor nutritional status.

Indo-US case-control study of senile cataract--design and development.

Study design and development are presented for an investigation of risk factors for senile cataract in a collaborative Indo-US case-control study in New Delhi, India. This study emphasizes the relationship of nutritional status, as ascertained by biochemical assessment on plasma and red blood cells and by dietary history, to specific cataract types (nuclear, cortical, posterior subcapsular).

Early Life Nutrition: The First 1000 Days and Healthy Aging in Cystic Fibrosis.

Achievement of optimal nutritional status within the first 1000 days of life for a child with cystic fibrosis (CF) is of paramount importance, with an emphasis on favorable early life growth trajectories that best optimize pulmonary and extrapulmonary health. The 'first 1000 days' framework emphasizes that environmental, sociocultural and nutritional exposures during this period can have life-long consequences for physical, cognitive, social and emotional health and development. Optimal nutrition encompasses not just physical growth, but the provision of nutrients and optimal feeding throughou…

Development, feasibility and usability of an app for the correct nutrition of children and adolescents with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

INTRODUCTION: Proper nutrition during cancer treatment is crucial for children and adolescents with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), as malnutrition can impact treatment tolerance, survival, and quality of life. In ALL specifically, malnutrition at diagnosis has been associated with increased risk of infections, treatment delays, and poorer survival, while maintaining adequate nutritional status can improve treatment tolerance and long-term outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed and tested the "Hematognam" app, which provides caregivers with dietary guidance for children and adolesc…

Effect of Nutritional Intervention on Chemotherapy Tolerance and Quality of Life in Patients with Colorectal Cancer Undergoing Postoperative Chemotherapy: A Randomized Controlled Study.

This study explored the effect of symptom-based individualized nutritional intervention on chemotherapy tolerance and quality of life (QOL) in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) undergoing postoperative chemotherapy. Postoperative patients with CRC (n = 88) were randomly assigned to the control group (CG, n = 45) and intervention group (IG, n = 43) receiving conventional diet counseling and symptom-based individualized nutritional intervention, respectively, and chemotherapy tolerance, adverse effects, and QOL were compared. Participants in the IG exhibited better nutritional status at the …

Functional and nutritional effects of mandibular two-implant overdentures in edentulous adults: A prospective clinical study.

PURPOSE: Edentulism is associated with impaired masticatory function and nutritional deficiencies, particularly in older adults. Implant-supported overdentures have been suggested as a prosthetic intervention to enhance chewing ability and improve dietary intake. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of mandibular two-implant overdentures on chewing ability, dietary intake, and nutritional status in edentulous middle-aged and older adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective clinical study was conducted with 35 edentulous participants aged 50 years and older. Participants were assessed at …

Protein-energy malnutrition: a risk factor for various ailments.

The wheel of industrialization that spun throughout the last century resulted in urbanization coupled with modifications in lifestyles and dietary habits. However, the communities living in developing economies are facing many problems related to their diet and health. Amongst, the prevalence of nutritional problems especially protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) and micronutrients deficiencies are the rising issues. Moreover, the immunity or susceptibility to infect-parasitic diseases is also directly linked with the nutritional status of the host. Likewise, disease-related malnutrition that inc…

Plasma homocysteine levels, physical activity and macronutrient intake in young healthy men.

INTRODUCTION: It is well documented that high blood homocysteine (Hcy) levels possibly contribute to insulin resistance through the induction of resistin and inhibition of adiponectin expression in mouce adipose tissue in vitro. Additionally, in humans, hyperhomocysteinemia has been recognized as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). AIM OF THE STUDY: Our study aimed at the evaluation of the relationship between total plasma Hcy levels and physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness and dietary habits in young healthy men. The results of a national survey regarding nutritional care of obese burn patients.

Little is known about the nutritional needs of obese burn patients. Given the impact of obesity on the morbidity and mortality of these patients, a uniform understanding of perceptions and practices is needed. To elucidate current practices of clinicians working with the obese burn population, the authors constructed a multidisciplinary survey designed to collect this information from practitioners in United States burn centers. An electronic approach was implemented to allow for ease of distribution and completion. A portable document format (pdf) letter was e-mailed to the members of the Ame

CONCLUSION: VAD is highly prevalent among rural pregnant women in Bangladesh. Gestational age, nutritional status, per-capita expenditure on food and wealth index appear to be important in influencing the vitamin A status of these women. An appropriate intervention is warranted in order to improve the vitamin A status.

Lessons from successful micronutrient programs. Part III: program impact.

Micronutrient-deficiency control programs have been greatly extended at the national level in the last 10 to 15 years. However, rigorous evaluations of these are scarce, so that conclusions on impact are tentative and based mainly on indirect evidence. The coverage of vitamin A capsule distribution programs has exceeded 70% in most study countries. In countries implementing national iodized salt programs, the coverage reaches 60% to 90% of households with adequately iodized salt. Of the three micronutrients, coverage of iron tablet supplementation is the least well documented due to inadequate

Prevalence of malnutrition in nonsurgical hospitalized patients and its association with disease complications.

Infant Diet Quality and Federal Nutrition Assistance Program Participation Predict Later Diet Quality in United States Children 2-5 Years Old.

BACKGROUND: Infant diet quality has been associated with early childhood dietary behaviors and nutritional outcomes. For United States children in low-income households, programs such as the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Medicaid provide benefits to improve health outcomes. Examining the role of dietary exposures during infancy is important to understand how duration in these programs is associated with childhood diet quality and weight status. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine whe

The Diet as a Modulator of Tumor Microenvironment in Colorectal Cancer Patients.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers in Western countries and remains the second most common cause of cancer death worldwide. Many studies show the importance of diet and lifestyle in the incidence of CRC, as well as in CRC prevention. However, this review summarizes those studies that analyze the impact of nutrition on tumor microenvironment modulation and cancer progression. We review the available information about the effects of specific nutrients on cancer cell progression and on the different cells within the tumor microenvironment. Diet and nutritional status in the…
