BACKGROUND: Respiratory muscle paralysis is a serious complication of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS). Factors that govern duration and recovery from respiratory paralysis are unclear.
AIM: To correlate electrophysiological parameters in critically ill GBS with duration of mechanical ventilation and outcome at discharge.

Mandatory bicycle helmet laws have been found to increase helmet wearing rates in Australia and internationally. However, much of the research on factors influencing compliance with the Australian helmet laws is dated or focuses on commuters and city areas only. METHODS: Women were prospectively enrolled and followed for 6 months. At enrollment, subjects were given a card for recording daily pill intake; its completion was checked at 6 months when women completed a self-administered questionnaire.

Studies on the neural bases of action perception have largely focused on the perception of individual actions. Little is known about perception of joint actions where two or more individuals coordinate their actions based on a shared intention. In this fMRI study we asked whether observing situations where two individuals act on a shared intention elicits a different neural response than observing situations where individuals act on their independent parallel intentions. We compared the neural response to perceptually identical yet intentionally ambiguous actions observed in varying contexts.

OBJECTIVES: The older population are at a high risk for suicide. This study sought to learn more about the characteristics of suicide in the oldest-old and to use a cluster analysis to determine if oldest-old suicide victims assort into clinically meaningful subgroups.
METHODS: Data were collected from a coroner's chart review of suicide victims in Toronto from 1998 to 2011. We compared two age groups (65-79 year olds, n = 335, and 80+ year olds, n = 191) and then conducted a hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis using Ward's method to identify distinct clusters in the 80+ group.
