BACKGROUND: Fractures of the femoral neck are rare injuries in children but can have many devastating complications. Their treatment is not standardized, but the objectives are early anatomic reduction to minimize the risk for complications. The aim of this study was to assess outcomes of a short series of femoral neck fractures managed in a resource-limited setting.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical charts of 11 children who were managed in our institution for femoral neck fractures between January 2000 and December 2015 were assessed retrospectively. There were two cases (n = 2) of Delbet

BACKGROUND: The LCP Distal Humerus Plate (DHP) system represents an angular stable fixation system consisting of 2 anatomically pre-shaped orthogonal plates intended for the treatment of fractures of the distal humerus. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical and radiologic outcome after a minimum follow-up of 2 years after open reduction and fixation of distal humeral fractures with this device.
METHODS: Twenty-two consecutive patients with distal humeral fractures were treated with the DHP system between January 2004 and June 2006. Of these, 16 could be clinical

BACKGROUND: Patients' satisfaction with gait after calcaneal fracture has rarely been studied. The objective of this paper was to determine how patient demographics, fracture type and treatment affected gait satisfaction after displaced intraarticular calcaneal fractures. The design of the study is a prospective randomized trial performed in four Level I trauma centers.
METHODS: Three hundred and nineteen patients with 351 radiographically proven displaced intraarticular calcaneal fractures (DIACF) were randomly assigned to open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), or nonoperative treatmen

BACKGROUND: The incidence of median nerve injuries in pediatric elbow dislocations is approximately 3% and avulsion of the open medial epicondylar epiphysis in the pediatric population is one predisposing factor that may explain this age predilection. These lesions can be difficult to diagnose in the acute phase because symptoms tend to be mild or delayed, consequently their management can be challenging and functional outcome poorer.
METHODS: We present the case of an unrecognized median nerve entrapment in a 16-year-old boy with posterior dislocation of the elbow and a medial epicondyle fra

PURPOSE: The fractures of anterior mandible are subject to severe torsional forces due to muscles acting in opposite directions. 3D miniplate has been suggested as a good alternative by some researchers. However, finite element model (FEM) studies indicate that labio-inferior positioning of two miniplates perpendicular to each other offers better stability as compared to labial positioning. This study aims at combining the advantages of a single 3D miniplate and labio-inferior positioning of two conventional miniplates, which was assessed by finite element analysis along with a pilot clinical

BACKGROUND: Terrible triad injuries consist of a posterior dislocation of the elbow, a coronoid fracture, and a radial head fracture. The coronoid plays a pivotal role as an anterior buttress, yet the optimal management of the coronoid fracture remains unknown. We hypothesize that suture lasso fixation of the coronoid fracture leads to fewer complications and improved outcomes compared with screw or suture anchor fixation techniques.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review performed at three tertiary care centers identified forty consecutive patients treated for terrible triad injuries of the e

Fusarium species, a soil-borne fungi, causes disease in animals and humans, particularly in immunocompromized patients. A 62-year-old male presented with type II diabetes mellitus, diagnosed 4 years ago. He had a motorcycle accident-caused open tibiofibular fracture of the left lower extremity (Gustilo grade IIIb). With open reduction and internal fixation, an anterolateral thigh musculocutaneous flap was harvested for coverage of exposed bone and defect reconstruction. Partial failure of the flap occurred 9 days following reconstruction, and histological examination revealed Fusarium spp. Aft

The incidence of diacapsular fracture of the mandibular condyle (DFMC) has increased in recent years. However, the specific modality of treatment which would provide maximum benefit and good results for adult patients of DFMC has been controversial. To evaluate and compare morphological changes of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) after open and closed treatments for DFMC, a sheep model of a type B DFMC was created by osteotomy. Eight sheep models of type B DFMC were randomly divided into 2 groups to receive closed treatment (Group 1) and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF, Group 2), respe

Hip fractures are ranked among the frequent injuries. These fractures have been often coupled with high energy trauma in children and in patients with normal bone structure, low energy trauma and osteoporotic fracture (fragility fracture) is typical in elder patients. Hip fractures are divided into five groups: femoral head fracture, femoral neck fracture, pertrochanteric, intertrochateric and subtrochanteric fracture. Surgical treatment is indicated in all patients unless contraindications are present. Long bed rest has been accompanied by a high risk of development of thromboembolic disease,

INTRODUCTION: Fracture of the medial end of the clavicle is very rare. There is no consensus on the standard surgical strategy for medial clavicle fracture, and treatment is challenging. This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the efficacy of internal plate fixation for displaced medial clavicle fracture.
METHODS: Patients who underwent internal plating of a displaced medial clavicle fracture were included in this retrospective study. Each patient underwent open reduction and fixation with an internal extra-articular locking plate or trans-articular hook plate based on their fracture typ
