The peritoneal epithelial lesions in 40 cases of proliferating ovarian serous tumour are described. The lesions were varied and of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic form. The most common was serous tumour similar to that in the associated ovarian neoplasm. Tumour of this type was present in some or all of the peritoneal lesions in 77.5% of cases. In nearly two-thirds, the tumour was superficial; in the rest it invaded omentum. Occasionally, the infiltrating tumour was poorly differentiated. A case of communicating hydrocephalus with excessive amount of choroid plexus confirmed by computerized tomography scan in a five-year-old girl is reported. The child exhibited hypovolemic shock and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) ascites after ventriculo-peritoneal shunting and relief after ventriculoatrial shunting. Some features suggest overproduction of CSF, with the so-called "third-space" fluid losses, due to sequestration of fluids in the body (peritoneum) that might explain shock. They review 22 cases of CSF ascites reported in the literature.

At present, only a few data are available on the effects of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) on renal osteodystrophy. Twelve patients on CAPD were studied for one year, in order to evaluate the progress of renal osteodystrophy. Our results showed a downward trend of plasma calcium, a good control of phosphatemia, a significant increase of alkaline phosphatase and parathyroid hormone. Protein electrophoresis was performed on the lavage effluent of dogs after isolated jejunal (N = 7) or transverse colon (N = 5) injuries and after sham operations (N = 5). The beta-globulin fraction was significantly elevated in the bowel-injured dogs as compared with the sham model. Protein electrophoresis may provide a useful diagnostic marker of hollow visceral injury.

Fifteen children undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis for 0.3 to 2.4 years were evaluated longitudinally for renal osteodystrophy. Immunoreactive parathyroid hormone, 25-OHD, total and ionized calcium, inorganic phosphate, and alkaline phosphatase levels were measured regularly. In 10 patients who had been on CAPD for 8.75 months, blood levels of the vitamins A, E, B-complex and C were measured and a precise diet history using food weighing for 3 days was obtained. The incidence of and mortality from diffuse peritoneal sepsis associated with the vaginal drainage of pelvic abscesses were retrospectively studied at two hospitals. During the 16-year period from 1961 through 1977 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, 50 patients underwent colpotomy drainage of pelvic abscesses, diffuse peritoneal sepsis occurred in 5 cases (10%), and 2 of these 5 patients died (40%). Forty rats were laparotomized and subjected to a standardized cecal trauma. In half the number of the rats, the injured cecum was embedded in oxidized regenerated cellulose (Surgicel). In the remaining 20 rats, which served as controls, the cecum was left uncovered. The rats were sacrificed at 14 days after the operation and examined for intraperitoneal adhesions.
