Primary and Secondary Variants of Callous-Unemotional Traits in Children with Conduct Problems: A Longitudinal Follow-up During Adolescence.

Recent empirical work has suggested that youths with conduct problems and presenting high levels of callous-unemotional (CU) traits can be divided in two variants (i.e., primary, secondary) presenting specific characteristics and needs, but studies examining outcomes associated longitudinally with variants memberships remain scarce. Building on a previous investigation in which we identified variants of CU traits among children with conduct problems, we examined differences between groups on a wide range of behavioral/psychological, relational/social, and educational outcomes assessed during a

Child Sexual Abuse within the Catholic Church in Spain: A Descriptive Analysis of its Characteristics and Long-Term Impact.

Sexual abuse within the Catholic Church is a serious social issue and a significant public health problem that has caused extensive harm worldwide. In 2022, an independent commission was established in Spain to investigate sexual abuse within the Church. The commission gathered data from 334 victims (82.3% men, 17.7% women), who were predominantly aged between 55 and 74 years old (62.5%). A majority of victims (71.0%) endured sexual abuse involving physical contact, while 21% reported instances of oral, anal, or vaginal penetration. Over half of the victims (57.5%) reported emotional and behav

Caring for Daughters with Anorexia Nervosa: A Qualitative Study on Parents' Representation of the Problem and Management of the Disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study explores the implicit theories by which primary caregivers (PC) of patients diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (AN) understand the eating disorder and interpret their role in treating and managing the problem. METHODOLOGY: In-depth, semi-structured, and open interview questions were used to achieve the study's goals. In total, 19 caregivers, 16 mothers, and three fathers (mean age: 50.74; SD: 5.248) from a public service for the treatment of behavioral disorders in southern Italy were interviewed. A lexical correspondence analysis (LCA) was applied to the verbatim transcri

Motor cortex dysfunction in problem gamblers.

Impairments in response inhibition have been implicated in gambling psychopathology. This behavioral impairment may suggest that the neural mechanisms involved in response inhibition, such as GABAA -mediated neurotransmission in the primary motor cortex (M1), are also impaired. The present study obtained paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation markers of GABAA and glutamate receptor activity from the left M1 of three groups-problem gamblers (n = 17, 12 males), at-risk gamblers (n = 29, 19 males), and controls (n = 23, six males)-with each group matched for alcohol use, substance use, an

Improving the neural mechanisms of cognition through the pursuit of happiness.

This paper reviews evidence on the neural basis of how positive mood states can modulate cognition, particularly during creative problem-solving. Studies performed over the past few decades demonstrate that individuals in a positive mood engage in a broader scope of attention, enhancing their access to distant and unusual semantic associations, and increasing task-shifting and problem-solving capacities. In this review, we summarize these behavioral studies; we then present recent findings on the changes in brain activation patterns that are induced by a positive mood when participants engage

A brief self-help toolkit intervention for gambling problems: a randomized multisite trial.

Two studies conducted in Massachusetts and Nevada evaluated the efficacy of a self-help toolkit for problem gambling. Individuals concerned about gambling-related problems, in response to public notices and newspaper advertisements, volunteered for a randomized trial of the self-help toolkit, Your First Step to Change: Gambling. Participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 conditions: (a) a printed toolkit, (b) the toolkit and a brief guide to the toolkit's content, or (c) assignment to a wait-list condition. Participants, 145 in Massachusetts and 170 in Nevada, reported their gambling behavi

Social competence and friendship formation in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Friendship formation (making friends, keeping friends, and having successful interactions with peers and adults) constitutes a critical developmental-social milestone for adolescents. This process can be especially challenging for adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, whose attentional problems may negatively affect their social skills (verbal and nonverbal language) and who fail to appreciate the complexity and nuances of adolescent communication. They often do not respond to feedback cues. They may be perceived as "immature," lacking empathy, and loners and losers, they

Promoting healthy choices: the importance of differentiating between ordinary and high risk cannabis use among high-school students.

Education can affect the lives of adolescents by reinforcing healthy choices and promoting a healthy lifestyle. However, difficulties experienced in the school and family environments may interfere with these goals. This may be particularly true for those youth already participating in health-compromising behaviors such as drug use. Of course, patterns of drug use take many forms, and some are more serious than others. Youth using cannabis at more intensive levels have often been overlooked in the literature. This paper, based on 1997 data, addressed this gap by examining the effects of indivi

Prescription drug abuse.

Misuse and abuse of prescription medication can be a difficult clinical area for physicians. Prior to prescribing any mood-altering medication, the physician should screen for patients at risk for abuse by asking about an individual or family history of alcohol or other drug abuse. When prescribing a psychoactive medication, the clinician should be sure that there is a clear clinical indication and should identify a therapeutic end-point and time limit. Nonpharmacologic interventions should be emphasized when appropriate. When misuse rather than abuse is suspected, the intervention may be one

Familial drinking history as a predictor of alcohol and drug consumption among adolescent children.

Data concerning adolescent alcohol and drug using behaviors, as well as the drinking patterns of their parents, were obtained from a sample of 1,380 New Jersey youth born between 1961 and 1969. Initially tested between 1979 and 1981 at ages 12, 15 or 18, these subjects were retested between 1982 and 1984 (retest rate = 95%). We wish to describe the early differences in patterns of alcohol and drug use between offspring of families exhibiting a positive history of alcoholism (FH+) and those without such backgrounds (FH-). FH+ subjects are compared to three other groups from varying parental bac

Abnormal cervical cytology in adolescents: a literature review.

This article reviews the literature on the subject of cervical cytological abnormalities in teenagers, defined as a Papanicolaou (Pap) smear result more severe than inflammation. There is discussion of the increasing prevalence of this problem in adolescents. Behavioral and biologic risk factors are examined. The role of the human papillomavirus, widely believed to be the etiologic agent, is addressed. Atypia, its relationship to cervical malignancies, and its management are reviewed. The possible role of the human immunodeficiency virus in the increasing prevalence of cytological abnormalitie

The effects of marital disruption on adolescents: time as a dynamic.

As part of an ongoing ten-year longitudinal research project, 382 15-year-olds from a white, working-class community were studied. Findings indicate that those who experienced parental separation more recently were most likely to be adversely affected, and that girls from recently disrupted families were more likely than boys to experience problems in emotional and behavioral functioning and were likely to express dissatisfaction with available levels of social support.

Executive Functioning and Conduct Problems in Youth with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure: A Scoping Review.

Executive functioning impairment is a core neurobehavioral feature of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) across all diagnostic frameworks and can result from prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). Executive functioning (EF) is also associated with conduct problems, although the precise relationship between the variables in youth with PAE remains unclear. The primary aim of this scoping review is to clarify the relationship between executive functioning and conduct problems in youth with PAE based on existing literature. The secondary aim of the scoping review is to identify gaps in existing lit

Trajectories of attention problems in autistic children and relations to social skills outcomes.

Co-occurring autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been associated with poorer social skills. Most studies examining the association of ADHD symptoms and social skills in autism employ categorical and cross-sectional designs, which provide a narrow view of the development of ADHD symptoms. Using group-based trajectory modeling, we identified five trajectories of caregiver-reported attention problems in an inception cohort of autistic children (N = 393) followed from age 2-5 years (T1) to age 10.5-11 years (T8): Low-Stable (LS; 15.5% of participants), Low-Decreasing (L

Low household income and adolescent mental health.

The association between low household income and adolescent mental health causes continuing concern. We examined the relation between household income and adolescent internalizing and externalizing problems, and explored individual, parental, and neighborhood characteristics. The sample included 872 Dutch adolescents (Mage = 14.93 years) oversampled on risk of psychopathology. Low income was defined as parent-reported net monthly household income below the 20th percentile (<€2000). Internalizing and externalizing problems were examined using the Youth Self-Report and Child Behavior Checklist.

A scoping review of literature: What has been studied about mental health problems among individuals with ankylosing spondylitis?

BACKGROUND: Research on mental health problems in individuals with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) has rapidly expanded since 2013. However, the evidence in this field can appear fragmented due to the limited number of existing reviews that synthesize research findings. AIM: To map the evidence regarding the prevalence, correlated factors, and interventions for mental health problems in the AS population. METHODS: This review followed Arksey and O'Malley's framework and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews. Six electronic databases
