Early hypothermia as risk factor in severely burned patients: A retrospective outcome study.

INTRODUCTION: Burn trauma-related hypothermia is a frequent observation but risk factors and impact on patient related outcome are ambiguously reported. It is expected that hypothermia is associated with increased mortality and reduced overall outcome in severely burned patients, but available evidence is limited. METHODS: This retrospective single-center-study reviewed preclinical service protocols and medical records of patients sustaining a burn with a total body surface area (TBSA) ≥15% from 2008 to 2012. General patient and burn specific characteristics, outcome parameters as well as bod

Gender differences in cognitive outcome after cardiac arrest: A retrospective cohort study.

Introduction: Recent studies have suggested gender disparities in neurologic outcome after cardiac arrest (CA). However, the relation between gender and cognitive outcome has been rarely examined. Here we investigated whether sex is associated with cognitive outcome after CA events. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted using data collected at our institution from January 2006 to May 2017. Patients were included if they had a documented CA and were able to participate in structured neuropsychological testing. Cognitive status was assessed at about 2.1 month after CA and included tests

Trends in use and misuse of opioids in the Netherlands: a retrospective, multi-source database study.

BACKGROUND: The USA is currently facing a serious opioid misuse epidemic that started with increased prescribing of oxycodone and the inclusion of pain as a fifth vital sign, and eventually resulted in massive overdose mortality. In Europe, including the Netherlands, the medical use of opioids (mainly oxycodone) has also increased since 2009, but an increase in proxies for opioid misuse has not yet been described. METHODS: For this retrospective, multi-source database study, data were requested from several national databases in the Netherlands to evaluate the following time trends: (1) numbe

Distinct effects of antihypertensives on depression in the real-world setting: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence is increasing that pathways of antihypertensives may have a role in the pathogenesis of depression. However, how the class of antihypertensives affects depression risk remains unclear. METHODS: The effects of different classes of antihypertensives on depression were explored using an insurance database in Beijing, China. Antihypertensives in our study included calcium channel blockers (CCBs), angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), beta-blockers (BBs), and diuretics (DIUs). Those initially treated with only one class of a

Clinical, Electroencephalographic Features and Prognostic Factors of Cefepime-Induced Neurotoxicity: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of cefepime-induced neurotoxicity (CIN) has been previously underestimated, and there have only been sporadic reports from critical neurological settings. The present study aimed to investigate the potential factors associated with disease development, electroencephalography (EEG) sub-classification, and outcome measures. METHODS: The 10-year medical records of patients who underwent EEG between 2007 and 2016 at a tertiary medical center in Taiwan, and developed encephalopathy after cefepime therapy were retrospectively reviewed. Age- and sex-matched controls were in

The Occurrence of Metronidazole-Induced Encephalopathy in Cancer Patients: A Hospital-Based Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Metronidazole-induced encephalopathy (MIE) is a rare but serious complication caused by metronidazole, a widely used antianaerobic drug. Previous studies prescribed MIE including dysarthria, cerebellar ataxia, and confusion after long-term use of metronidazole. Malignancy has been proposed one of the predisposing conditions for MIE. However, the occurrence of MIE in cancer patients remains unknown. METHODOLOGY: We investigated the occurrence of MIE and analyzed retrospectively by hospital-based data of 4160 cancer patients from January 2014 to December 2016. RESULTS: Findings in

Sex-Specific Differences in Ventricular Dimensions in Repaired Tetralogy of Fallot: A Retrospective Study.

The timing of pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) in asymptomatic patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is typically based on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging-derived ventricular volume measurements. Current criteria do not account for sex-based differences in chamber size. The purpose of this study was to compare male and female ventricular volumes and function in TOF patients with a hypothesis that females are less likely to meet common-indexed right ventricular end-diastolic volume (RVEDVi) and right ventricular end-systolic volume (RVESVi) criteria for PVR. Cardiac magnetic reso

The predictive role of CA-125 in the management of tubo-ovarian abscess. A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA) is a well-established sequel of acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). While as up to 25% of women will experience conservative treatment failure, the factors associated with treatment failure are not clearly-established, and the role of Cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) is under-studied. We aim to evaluate the role of CA-125 in the conservative management of TOA. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study conducted at tertiary university-affiliated hospital during 2007-2018. Ninety one patients were diagnosed with a TOA and underwent a trial of conservative m

Outcome of surgical management for midurethral sling complications: a multicentre retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Suspension of midurethral sling (MUS) surgery in the UK has led to a call for further evidence regarding long-term morbidity and the efficacy of treatments when mesh complications are encountered. We reviewed how many patients who underwent MUS surgery in Teesside, UK, returned to theatre due to a complication and what the outcomes were following this surgical intervention. METHODS: All patients coded to have undergone an MUS procedure between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2014 in Teesside were reviewed retrospectively (n = 924). Case notes were analysed for pati

Effect of modified laparoscopic hysterectomy on pelvic floor function: A retrospective observational study.

Hysterectomy is a potential risk factor for subsequent surgery for pelvic organ prolapse, especially when the prolapse exists before hysterectomy. Women without prolapse before hysterectomy may also experience prolapse after hysterectomy. This study aimed to describe a surgical modification of laparoscopic colposuspension with round ligaments after hysterectomy in women without preexisting genital prolapse and to evaluate the initial surgical results in these patients. We reviewed data of 54 patients who underwent laparoscopic hysterectomy with colposuspension with unilateral or bilateral round

Lithium treatment, nephrogenic diabetes insipidus and the risk of hypernatraemia: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hypernatraemia is a serious condition that can potentially become life threatening. It is known that lithium is associated with polyuria and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, risk factors for hypernatraemia. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that lithium treatment was a risk factor for hypernatraemia. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study in the Swedish region of Norrbotten into the effects and potential adverse effects of lithium treatment and other mood stabilizers (LiSIE). For this particular study, we included all patients who had experienced at least one epis
