Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a complex disease consisting of several disease variants with different underlying pathophysiologies. Limited knowledge of the mechanisms of these disease subgroups is possibly the greatest obstacle in understanding the causes of CRS and improving treatment. Vidian neurectomy has been used to manage intractable vasomotor rhinitis for decades. After the introduction of endoscopic sinus surgery in the 1980s, transnasal endoscopic vidian neurectomy (EVN) was subsequently reported. We conducted a retrospective review of 145 consecutively presenting adults treated for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in a tertiary care institution. Our goals were to determine (1) the prevalence of asthma in these patients, (2) the prevalence of specific CRS symptoms in both asthmatic and nonasthmatic patients, and (3) the frequency of surgical treatmentfor CRS in patients with and without asthma. BACKGROUND: Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) has traditionally been used as a spice, vegetable and as a herbal medicine. The main representatives of the Artemisia family besides Artemisia vulgaris include Artemisia absinthum and Artemisia dracunculus (estragon). Two cases of submandibular gland swelling are documented. In one patient examination of the excised submandibular gland revealed a dense eosinophilia: the other patient had a peripheral blood eosinophilia. Both patients demonstrated a marked decrease in the swelling of the salivary glands after a course of oral antihistamine. Although allergy has been implicated as a cause of recurrent parotid gland swelling, there are no previous reports of such a phenomenon occurring in the submandibular gland.
