Perioperative mobile application for mothers undergoing Cesarean delivery: a prospective cohort study on patient engagement.

PURPOSE: Giving birth is the most common reason for hospital admission, with Cesarean delivery being the most frequently performed inpatient surgery. Through a needs assessment and iterative design process involving patients and obstetric anesthesiologists, we previously developed a mobile application, C-Care, for patients undergoing Cesarean delivery. The focus of C-Care is perioperative education and self-monitoring of potential anesthetic complications. This study aimed to obtain feedback on patient engagement with C-Care. METHOD: We conducted a prospective cohort study of patients ≥ 18 yr

Cannabinoid Modulation of Food-Cocaine Choice in Male Rhesus Monkeys.

Marijuana and other cannabinoid compounds are widely used by cocaine users. Preclinical animal studies suggest that these compounds can increase the reinforcing effects of cocaine under some schedules of cocaine self-administration and reinstatement, but not in all cases. To date, no studies have used a food-cocaine concurrent choice procedure, which allows for assessment of drug effects on response allocation, not just changes in cocaine self-administration. The goal of the present study was to examine the effects of compounds differing in their efficacy at the cannabinoid receptor (CBR) on c

Validation of a High-End Virtual Reality Simulator for Training Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumors.

OBJECTIVE: The oncological outcome in patients with bladder cancer (BC) significantly correlates with the quality of transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TUR-BT). Virtual reality (VR) training simulators have been developed to improve surgical skills. We evaluated the advantages and limitations of the novel Uro Trainer (UT) (Karl Storz GmbH, Germany) with respect to training for TUR-BT. DESIGN: Participants underwent VR training based on 4 different TUR-BT cases accompanied by self-assessment and evaluation questionnaires. Results were compared between experienced endourologists and nov…

Determining optimal parameters of the self-referent encoding task: A large-scale examination of self-referent cognition and depression.

[Correction Notice: An Erratum for this article was reported online in Psychological Assessment on Aug 2 2018 (see record 2018-38659-001). In this article, there was an error in how exclusions for one of the three samples were reported, which resulted in inaccurate reporting of how many participants did not have complete data. This error did not change the primary results of the article or the conclusions. However, in the second paragraph of the Participant Attrition and Data Filtering section, the number of exclusions for the adolescent sample should be 301, not 163. As a result, n=408 should

Impact of Psychological Distress on Quality of Life, Functional Status, and Survival in Patients with Chronic Graft-versus-Host Disease.

Data on psychological distress and its association with clinical outcomes in patients with chronic graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) are lacking. We used data of patients with chronic GVHD (N = 482) from the Chronic GVHD Consortium, a prospective observational multicenter cohort. We examined the relationship between self-reported depression or anxiety symptoms (measured by the Lee Symptom Scale) and patients' quality of life (QOL; measured by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General [FACT-G] and the Physical Component Scale [PCS] of the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey), physical fun

GAMBLINGLESS: FOR LIFE study protocol: a pragmatic randomised trial of an online cognitive-behavioural programme for disordered gambling.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of disordered gambling worldwide has been estimated at 2.3%. Only a small minority of disordered gamblers seek specialist face-to-face treatment, and so a need for alternative treatment delivery models that capitalise on advances in communication technology, and use self-directed activity that can complement existing services has been identified. As such, the primary aim of this study is to evaluate an online self-directed cognitive-behavioural programme for disordered gambling (GamblingLess: For Life). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study will be a 2-arm, parallel gro

Findings from the Families on Track Intervention Pilot Trial for Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and Their Families.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are at high risk for costly, debilitating mental health problems and secondary conditions, such as school disruption, trouble with the law, and substance use. The study objective was to pilot a multicomponent intervention designed to prevent secondary conditions in children with FASD and improve family adaptation. METHODS: Thirty children with FASD or prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) (ages 4 to 8) and their primary caregivers were enrolled. Families were randomized to either the Families on Track Integrated Preventive Interve

Treatment may influence self-report and jeopardize our understanding of outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Standardized measures of self-reported alcohol use are the predominant method by which change in alcohol use following interventions is evaluated. This study examined whether the invariance of the test-retest pretreatment Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) was affected by the treatment experience. In this study, the intervening exposure was to motivational interviewing (MI) versus community service (CS), the treatment-as-usual control group. METHOD: Analyses were conducted on a subsample of court-referred 16- to 21-year-olds recruited into a randomized controlled tri

Racial/ethnic and gender differences in the association between self-reported experiences of racial/ethnic discrimination and inflammation in the CARDIA cohort of 4 US communities.

Inflammation is etiologically implicated in cardiometabolic diseases for which there are known racial/ethnic disparities. Prior studies suggest there may be an association between self-reported experiences of racial/ethnic discrimination and inflammation, particularly C-reactive protein (CRP). It is not known whether that association is influenced by race/ethnicity and gender. In separate hierarchical linear models with time-varying covariates, we examined that association among 901 Black women, 614 Black men, 958 White women, and 863 White men in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young

Psychosexual development of children and adolescents with hypospadias.

INTRODUCTION: Hypospadias is the most common malformation of the penis. Despite the common assumption that hypospadias may affect children's psychosexual development, only a few studies report on the patients' psychosexual adjustment during childhood and adolescence. AIM: A comprehensive, cross-sectional investigation of the psychosexual development of boys operated on for hypospadias in comparison to a healthy control group. METHODS: Sixty-eight children and adolescents (7-17 years) operated on for hypospadias were examined by means of a standardized interview assessing penile self-percepti
