Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant condition with a wide array of neurological complications, including cognitive dysfunction, tumors, malformations, neuropathy, neurovascular disease, and epilepsy. Many of these complications may impact on sleep quality and cause sleep disturbance. Previously sleep disturbance in NF1 has been specifically addressed solely in children. We performed a prospective study of sleep quality in 114 consecutive out-patients with NF1 attending our national neurofibromatosis service. The Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) and the Pittsburgh sleep qualit

OBJECTIVES: The primary aim was to determine the prevalence of International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9), sleep disorders diagnosed by pediatric providers in a large, primary care network. Secondary aims were to examine demographic variables related to these diagnoses and to examine the frequency of prescriptions for medications potentially used to treat sleep disorders.
METHODS: Electronic medical records were reviewed for 154957 patients (0-18 years) seen for a well-child visit in 2007. Information collected included ICD-9 sleep diagnoses, demographic variables, comor

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Several studies performed in Western countries demonstrate the association between sleep dysfunction and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), especially when nighttime heartburn is present. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence and risk factors of sleep dysfunction, and the effect of rabeprazole on reflux symptoms and sleep dysfunction in Japanese GERD patients.
METHODS: A total of 134 GERD patients, including 82 patients with non-erosive reflux disease (NERD), were enrolled. Patients received rabeprazole 10 mg daily for 8 weeks. Patients were asked to

INTRODUCTION: Although wrist actigraphy-derived sleep indices correlate with adverse health outcomes, it is unclear whether these indices identify specific sleep disorders.
METHODS: Overnight polysomnography and > or = three 24-h periods of wrist actigraphy were performed in the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures (SOF) (n = 455, age: 73-96 y). Actigraphy identified those with reduced sleep efficiency (SE, < 70%) and decreased sleep duration (< or = 5 h). Sleep disorders considered were: (1) sleep-disordered breathing (SDB): respiratory disturbance index > or =15 and (2) periodic limb movement di

In the present study, we investigated the changes of sleep parameters in rats with chronic constriction injury (CCI) under aversive conditions. The electroencephalogram (EEG) in the frontal cortex of CCI rats and electromyogram (EMG) were measured over 6 h by placing rats on sandpaper as an aversive condition, to compare with rats placed on sawdust. Six days after CCI surgery, the rats exhibited significant mechanical allodynia, and also had neuropathic pain. When rats were placed on sawdust, no significant difference was observed between the CCI group and sham-operated control group in sleep

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To measure the effects of prolonged sleep extension on daytime alertness, vigilance, and mood in healthy young adults. Little research has documented the effects of increased sleep on daytime function despite a high prevalence of daytime fatigue and sleepiness in the adult population. Past extension studies report conflicting results with regard to Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) scores, vigilance, and mood ratings. No study has challenged subjects to maximum sleep extension, defined by an MSLT score of 20.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifteen healthy college students repo

Nurse researchers have provided evidence that hospital critical care unit (CCU) noise may put patients at risk for sleep problems. Technological advances in this setting have been described as contributing to this problem. Although data on the negative effects of CCU noise on physiological sleep are available, less attention has been given to self-reports of the subjective quality of sleep following exposure to this stressor. This study hypothesized that subjects exposed to CCU sound levels would report poorer subjective sleep than subjects in a quieter environment. Sixty female subjects, atte

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with 2-5 times greater prevalence of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) than the general population. The contribution of SCI on sleep and breathing at different levels of injury using two scoring methods has not been assessed. The objectives of this study were to characterize the sleep disturbances in the SCI population and the associated physiological abnormalities using quantitative polysomnography and to determine the contribution of SCI level on the SDB mechanism.
METHODS: We studied 26 consecutive patients with SCI (8 females; age 42

We wished to establish an expert consensus on late stage of critical care (CC) management. The panel comprised 13 experts in CC medicine. Each statement was assessed based on the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) principle. Then, the Delphi method was adopted by 17 experts to reassess the following 28 statements. (1) ESCAPE has evolved from a strategy of delirium management to a strategy of late stage of CC management. (2) The new version of ESCAPE is a strategy for optimizing treatment and comprehensive care of critically ill patients (CIPs) after the

OBJECTIVE: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is associated with posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) and sleep disturbance into adulthood. The latter is thought to emerge from dysregulation in biobehavioral systems, including nighttime hyperarousal; however, studies investigating specific mechanisms to explain these long-term sleep problems are limited. The present study examined presleep arousal, fear of sleep, and the cortisol awakening response (CAR) as putative mediators between PTSS and sleep disturbance in women with a history of CSA.
METHOD: N = 64 cis-gendered women with a self-reported h

Fragmentation of rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) is well described in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and likely has significant functional consequences. Fear-conditioned rodents may offer an attractive model of the changes in sleep that characterize PTSD. Following fear conditioning (FC), Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats, a strain known to be particularly stress-sensitive, have increased REMS fragmentation that can be quantified as a shift in the distribution of REMS episodes towards the more frequent occurrence of sequential REMS (inter-REMS episode interval≤3 min) vs. single RE

Narcolepsy-cataplexy (N-C) is a focal neurodegenerative disease with a genetic predisposition and autoimmune etiology; the pathogenesis of narcolepsy without cataplexy (Nw/oC) is less clear. One hundred and forty eight patients underwent clinical face-to face interviews, polysomnography, multiple sleep latency testing and HLA-DQB1*0602 typing. The cohort was divided into four age groups: children and adolescents under 19 years (N = 31), adults aged 20-39 years (N = 51), 40-59 years (N = 28) and over 60 years (N = 38). N-C was found in 93 adults (79.5 %) compared with 16 pediatric patients (51.

OBJECTIVE: Higher body mass index (BMI) has been associated with more sleep disturbance and depressive symptoms, but the combined effects of depression and BMI on sleep have not been studied in children. This study evaluated the relationship between BMI and polysomnography in children with major depressive disorder (MDD), compared to healthy controls (HCs).
METHOD: The sample of 104 subjects included 72 children, 8-17 years old, with MDD and 32 similarly aged HCs with no personal or family history of psychopathology. BMI was adjusted using the CDC formula for percentiles by age. Subjects were

Sleep dysfunction is a pervasive issue in schizophrenia and psychosis. Current knowledge is drawn almost exclusively from studies using quantitative research methodologies that include measures and tools developed in healthy population groups. Qualitative studies investigating the first-person perspectives of sleep problems are therefore important for designing better assessment and treatment tools to meet consumer needs. Focus groups were conducted to elicit detailed information regarding the personal experience of sleep problems, their antecedents and impact, in 14 individuals with schizophr

Stress increases vulnerability to anxiety and depression. We have investigated the effect of acute immobilization stress in amygdalohippocampal circuits by measuring the electroencephalogram (EEG) in male Wistar rats during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Electrodes were implanted stereotaxically in the hippocampus (CA1 and CA3 subregions of the hippocampus) and the amygdala (lateral nucleus). Prior to the stress, two baseline recordings were taken. Twenty-four hours later rats were exposed once to acute immobilization stress (AIS) session for 2 h. After the release and on subsequent days, ele

Trauma exposure can lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a subset of vulnerable individuals. Circadian rhythm disturbances have emerged as a candidate pathway of vulnerability, yet mean circadian levels often show limited discriminability. We tested whether circadian instability at trauma aftermath prospectively predicts long-term PTSD risk, and what behavioral and physiological indices are most predictive. For that, 211 survivors of the Supernova music festival mass-trauma event and 113 matched comparison participants were monitored in real-world settings for one-month, two-to-six

Controlled studies have demonstrated that light supplementation benefits circadian entrainment, sleep and mood. Translating these findings into effective, real-world usage of light supplementation is, however, challenging because naturalistic and supplemental light exposure are shaped by personal habits and environmental light conditions. Bridging this translation gap is especially critical for older adults, given the reduced ocular light sensitivity associated with natural ageing, which exacerbates low daytime indoor light exposure in urban housing. We therefore set out to investigate the det

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is heterogeneous and complex, but its severity is still based on the apnea-hypoapnea index (AHI). The present study explores using cluster analysis (CA), the additional information provided from routine polysomnography (PSG) to optimize OSA categorization.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study of OSA subjects diagnosed by PSG in a tertiary hospital sleep unit during 2016-2020. PSG, demographical, clinical variables, and comorbidities were recorded. Phenotypes were constructed from PSG variables using CA. Results are shown as median (interquartile range).

Bruxism is a multifactorial motor behavior of predominantly central origin, characterized by repetitive masticatory muscle activity and associated with dysregulation of dopaminergic, serotonergic, GABAergic, and glutamatergic pathways involved in motor control, emotional regulation, and stress responsivity. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) has emerged as a key homeostatic neuromodulator capable of integrating these neurotransmitter systems, thereby influencing pain processing, sleep-wake dynamics, and motor output. This article develops a neurobiological hypothesis based on a narrative integra
