The reductive half-reaction of xanthine oxidase with substoichiometric concentrations of xanthine and 1-methylxanthine at pH 10 and 8.5 has been examined by UV-visible stopped-flow and rapid-quench electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) kinetic experiments. A spectral intermediate is observed in stopped-flow experiments with xanthine which exhibits a difference absorbance maximum relative to oxidized enzyme at 480 nm and which decays at the same rate as the decay of the "very rapid" MoV EPR signal observed by freeze-quench EPR experiments both at 5 and 20 degrees C. A method is described for the determination of inorganic tin by gas chromatography with flame photometric detection. The inorganic tins, stannous and stannic, were extracted with hydrochloric acid and n-hexane-benzene in the presence of 0.05% tropolone, and both inorganic tins were pentylated to tetrapentyltin with a Grignard reagent prior to gas chromatography. The isolation of several respiration deficient mutants of the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans is described. These show greatly reduced respiration rates, loss of cytochromes aa3 and b, and reduced growth rates. All of the mutants had lost the ability to assimilate a wide range of carbon sources. Ultrastructural studies showed reduced development of mitochondrial cristae in the mutants. The mutants can be divided into three classes depending on their respiration responses to the addition of cyanide.

The hemolysin/bacteriocin produced by some strains of Enterococcus faecalis is active in the lysis of human, rabbit, and horse erythrocytes, but not those from sheep. All stools passed on the first 3 days after extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy of gallbladder stones in 21 patients were collected and examined for the presence of stone fragments. Human scalp hair samples were oxidized to determine the sulfonic acid absorption peak. This peak was monitored at 1044 cm-1 by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in hair samples from 135 whites and found to provide a degree of discrimination in treated and untreated hairs. The stability of a combination of chlorpromazine hydrochloride (6.25 mg/mL), hydroxyzine hydrochloride (12.5 mg/mL), and meperidine hydrochloride (25 mg/mL) in glass and plastic syringes was studied. Syringes (glass 1.5 mL, plastic 3.0 mL) containing the combination drug solution were stored at 4, 25, and 44 degrees C.
