"Bearing in Mind That I Am a Black Mother": Black Women's Anticipation of Poor Perinatal Care and Related Coping Strategies.

BACKGROUND: Black women in the United States continue to experience disproportionate rates of severe maternal morbidity and mortality and frequently report disrespectful perinatal care. Although prior research has documented discriminatory encounters within perinatal care, less is known about how Black women anticipate and prepare for potential poor treatment before and during pregnancy. We aimed to better understand how Black women's anticipation of racism shapes their engagement with care during the perinatal period. METHODS: This qualitative secondary analysis draws on in-depth interviews

Evaluation of soluble transferrin receptor and malondialdehyde levels associated with ferroptosis in children with familial Mediterranean fever in remission.

OBJECTIVE: Familial Mediterranean fever, an autoinflammatory disease, is characterized by recurrent stereotypic febrile attacks associated with an inflammatory syndrome. Malondialdehyde, a lipid peroxidation marker, and soluble transferrin receptor, a key regulator of cellular iron homeostasis, are important markers associated with ferroptosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of these markers in children with familial Mediterranean fever in remission. METHODS: The study included 30 pediatric familial Mediterranean fever patients in remission who were being monitored in the

Cortically Mediated Muscle Responses to Balance Perturbations Increase with Perturbation Magnitude in Older Adults with and without Parkinson's Disease.

We lack a mechanistic understanding of how cortical contributions to balance control change in aging and Parkinson's disease (PD). Balance is governed by brainstem circuits, with higher-order centers like the cortex or basal ganglia becoming engaged as challenge increases or balance health declines. We previously showed that parallel sensorimotor feedback loops engaging brainstem and cortical circuitry contribute to muscle activity for balance control in young adults (YAs). Here, we analyze data from male and female older adults (OAs) with and without PD, decomposing perturbation-evoked tibial

Characterization of limb representation in the pig's motor cortex.

Due to its large gyrencephalic brain, the pig is increasingly used for neuroscience research, especially for the preclinical testing of novel neuroprostheses. However, our understanding of the pig's motor system remains limited compared with the common species used for neuroscience research. Here, we aimed to characterize the forelimb and hindlimb representation of the pig motor cortex using intracortical microstimulation (ICMS). Three domestic pigs (Sus scrofa) were placed in a modified stereotactic frame and maintained under intravenous propofol sedation. We mapped the motor cortex using ICM

Targeting the Elongin BC-BC-Box Interface: Structural Insights, Peptidic Disruptors and Emerging Small-Molecule Strategies.

Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) that orchestrate ubiquitin-dependent signaling have long challenged drug discovery because their interfaces are typically large and hydrophobic. The heterodimeric adaptor Elongin BC (ELOB/ELOC) defies this stereotype: its BC-box-binding groove is a deep, rigid pocket that anchors dozens of cellular and viral partners to cullin-RING ligases and to transcriptional machinery. Recent structural and chemical-biology breakthroughs have converted this once "undruggable" site into a tractable target. A sub-nanomolar peptide derived from the chromatin factor EPOP has

Transcultural experience of growing up in Soweto: towards a positive autoethnography.

This paper titled 'Transcultural Experience of Growing Up in Soweto: Towards a Positive Autoethnography' explores my lived experiences as a South African raised in Soweto, highlighting how cultural challenges shaped my personal growth, resilience, and professional identity. Growing up in a low-income household led by my single mother after my father's passing, have encountered numerous adversities, including food insecurity, limited family support, and disruptions in schooling. Despite these challenges, I have engaged in volunteer work and skills development opportunities, which widened my int

Cadences of the collective: conspecific stimulation patterns interact with endogenous rhythms to cue socially mediated response shifts.

Many animals form behavioral collectives, and optimal interaction strategies often differ across social contexts. Sensory scenes generated by many interacting conspecifics are complex. Thus, maintaining socially calibrated responses requires individuals to distill key features from conspecific scenes to guide continued adjustments to social fluctuations. Túngara frogs produce mating calls in choruses varying in size, and interaction patterns differ across social environments; rivals alternate their calls in smaller choruses, but increasingly overlap one another's calls in a stereotyped fashion

Repeated Stress Escalates Aggression and Activity in Fronto-Limbic Regions in Cntnap2-/- Mice.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by social impairments and stereotyped behavior, with some individuals exhibiting heightened aggression in response to stress. This stress induced aggression (SIA) can severely impact quality of life, yet its underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the behavioral phenotypes and neural activity that result as a consequence of stress in Cntnap2-/-:TRAP2+/-:Ai14+/- mice. Deletion of the CNTNAP2 gene leads to a highly penetrant syndromic form of ASD, and the targeted recombination in active populations (TRAP) syste

Post-Stroke Abnormal Synergies Are a Resultant Behavior of the Interplay of Weakness, Spasticity, and Environmental Demands.

Abnormal synergies coexist with primary motor impairments (weakness and spasticity) after stroke. They are observed during voluntary movements and are characterized by stereotyped movement patterns, a loss of independent joint control, and abnormal muscle coordination (eg, involuntary activation of distal muscles led by proximal joint movement). The structure and expression of abnormal synergies, however, are highly context-dependent (eg, influenced by gravity, body posture, and task constraints) and are not homogeneous across patients. Current evidence suggests that abnormal synergies are pat

Telehealth autism evaluation under suboptimal network conditions: Technical parameters and clinical implications.

Telehealth expands access to autism diagnostics, but scoring reliability depends on connection stability. Using an optical-fiber testbed, we imposed controlled packet loss and Wi-Fi attenuation to derive four freeze patterns (1-second freezes every 16.7, 11.1, 8.3, or 5.0 seconds), then applied these to 10 children's BOSA videos (40 clips) scored by four blinded psychologists. Analyses included Fisher's exact tests with Benjamini-Hochberg correction, Spearman correlation, and per-item logistic regression with Bonferroni correction. Performance degraded in a dose-dependent manner rather than co

A cluster-randomised controlled trial of Ahead of the Game: Mental health literacy and resilience in organised youth sport.

Organised sport provides an accessible environment for mental health promotion, particularly for adolescent males. The aim of this study was to conduct a cluster-randomised controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of Ahead of the Game, a sport-based mental health literacy and resilience program, compared to an active control who received promotional materials. Forty-four Australian community sport clubs were stratified by sport and block randomised, in varying sizes, to receive either Ahead of the Game (n = 20) or the active control (n = 24). A total of 704 adolescent males aged 12-21 yea

Successful Management of Recurrent Hemoptysis, Polycythemia and Respiratory Distress in a Dog.

A male castrated Shih Tzu was evaluated for recurrent nocturnal episodes of acute respiratory distress accompanied by hemoptysis and transient erythrocytosis. The dog was clinically normal between episodes, but each nighttime event was severe and prompted repeated emergency visits. During each emergency presentation, thoracic radiographs revealed severe diffuse interstitial-to-alveolar pulmonary infiltrates, and packed cell volume showed marked but reversible increases. A stepwise diagnostic evaluation, including serial indirect blood pressure measurement, coagulation assessment, echocardiogra

Warmth and competence in affective companion virtual humans: differential effects on behavioral intention via hedonic benefits.

Generation Z increasingly engages with affective companion virtual humans not as tools but as partners. However, it remains unclear how social perceptions-specifically warmth and competence-privacy-related attitudes jointly influence their behavioral intention, and whether hedonic benefits mediate these effects. Drawing on the hedonic motivation system acceptance model and the stereotype content model, this study proposes an integrated model linking perceived warmth, perceived competence, perceived privacy risk and privacy cynicism to behavioral intention toward affective companion virtual hum

Systemic and topical use of herbal drugs vary by plant organ and chemosensory properties in De MateriaMedica.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Botanical drugs can be used for internal and external applications while some are only applied for either. Aspects such as effectiveness, toxicity organoleptic properties such as shape, texture, colour, taste and smell can theoretically affect exclusive modes of application. AIM OF THE STUDY: Ethnomedicinal field studies often quantify plant organs mentioned for therapy and give stereotype explanations for their frequency of use without considering taxonomy, therapeutic applications or other factors. We tested for the effect of topical versus systemic applicati

Alcohol-associated liver disease in Asian Americans: the case for disaggregated analysis.

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is an increasingly important contributor to liver-related morbidity and mortality in the United States, yet its burden among Asian Americans remains poorly defined. Most national datasets aggregate Asian Americans into a single racial category, obscuring important differences across East Asian, Southeast Asian, and South Asian populations. This approach reinforces assumptions that Asian Americans uniformly have low-risk alcohol use and low rates of alcohol-related disease, potentially concealing vulnerable subgroups. Emerging evidence suggests considerabl

GBR 12909, a Selective Dopamine Transporter Inhibitor, Differentially Modulates Affective, Exploratory and Cognitive Domains in Zebrafish.

Dopamine plays an important role in several biological functions, such as reward, movement regulation and cognition. Physiological alterations in dopamine transporter (DAT) are related to psychiatric conditions, including bipolar disorder (BD), a condition characterized by intense shifts in mood, behaviour and energy, alternating between manic and depressive states. Administration of GBR 12909, a selective dopamine reuptake inhibitor, has been considered a suitable model to assess BD-related phenotypes, yet the integration of anxiety-like, despair-like, cognitive and spatiotemporal behavioural

Gender Inequities in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Workforce: A Narrative Review.

AIM: Obstetricians and gynecologists (OBGYNs) are high-risk, surgically intensive, and emergency-driven specialists. Women are the majority of OBGYNs, but their representation in decision-making roles remains disproportionately low. This narrative review explores the empirical evidence and aims to narrow gender gaps among OBGYNs. METHODS: We included 154 publications from 2000 to 2025 on gender inequity, career progression, women physicians, OBGYNs, academic promotion, leadership, workforce, and regional variation from Asia, Europe, North America, Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. Professional identity development among male psychiatric nurses in China: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Men remain underrepresented in nursing and often face gender stereotypes, occupational stigma, and challenges related to professional identity. These issues may be particularly pronounced in psychiatric nursing, where care involves therapeutic relationships, emotional labor, long-term patient contact, and exposure to aggression. This study explored how professional identity developed over the careers of male psychiatric nurses in China. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted with 16 male psychiatric nurses from a specialist psychiatric hospital in China. Data were collected be

Effects of pre-existing olfactory inflammation on Parkinson's disease related pathology following diffuse traumatic brain injury.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disorder, characterised by the stereotypical aggregation and spread of α-synuclein, with the olfactory system representing an early site of pathology. Risk factors for PD include traumatic brain injury (TBI) and exposure to environmental agents that induce olfactory inflammation, such as toxins and pathogens. However, despite these associations, the absolute risk of developing PD following such exposures remains low, suggesting that these factors may interact to modify vulnerability to PD development. This study aimed to investigat
