Adaptation of an Emotional Stroop Test for Screening of PTSD Related to Intimate Partner Violence in Spanish-Speaking Women.

Cognitive assessment instruments with emotional components may be useful to address the limitations of the self-report scales commonly used to assess post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in women victims of domestic violence (IPV). The aim of this study was to develop an Emotional Stroop task designed to identify post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) linked to intimate partner violence (IPV) in Spanish-speaking women. The validation of this test involved a comparative analysis between two groups: a clinical group (n = 50) and a non-clinical group (n = 50) of women with an average age of 38.38

Somatic panic-attack equivalents in a community sample of Rwandan widows who survived the 1994 genocide.

The present study is the first to attempt to determine rates of panic attacks, especially 'somatically focused' panic attacks, panic disorder, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression levels in a population of Rwandans traumatized by the 1994 genocide. The following measures were utilized: the Rwandan Panic-Disorder Survey (RPDS); the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI); the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ); and the PTSD Checklist (PCL). Forty of 100 Rwandan widows suffered somatically focused panic attacks during the previous 4 weeks. Thirty-five (87%) of those having p

Acute stress disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder in victims of violent crime.

OBJECTIVE: In a group of crime victims recruited from the community, the authors investigated the ability of both a diagnosis of acute stress disorder and its component symptoms to predict posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at 6 months. METHOD: A mixed-sex group of 157 victims of violent assaults were interviewed within 1 month of the crime. At 6-month follow-up 88% were reinterviewed by telephone and completed further assessments generating estimates of the prevalence of PTSD. RESULTS: The rate of acute stress disorder was 19%, and the rate of subsequent PTSD was 20%. Symptom clusters bas

Prediction of Mental Health Complications Following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Prognostic models can support prevention of mental health complications after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The present study aimed to identify risk factors and develop prognostic model(s) for mental health complications following mTBI. This secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial included 513 adults presenting to emergency departments/urgent care centers. Candidate predictors were demographic, injury-related and health history information collected during medical chart review and eligibility screening, and scores on questionnaires completed at 2 weeks postinjury. Dissociation and substance abuse among people with PTSD: Results from the National Survey for Stress and Health in Japan.

Patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) usually have other psychiatric comorbidities. This study analyzed data from a national survey in Japan (N = 1005 trauma-exposed adults) and examined co-occurring dissociation and substance abuse in patients with probable PTSD. Participants completed standardized screening measures of PTSD, dissociative symptoms, and substance abuse at baseline (T1), and then reported their levels of substance abuse again after 3 months (T2). Of participants who screened for PTSD at T1 (n = 639), 36.1 % reported dissociative symptoms, and 61.8 % reported substa

Maternal Adverse Childhood Experiences and Perinatal Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Substance Use.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum mental health conditions including depression are a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACE) have a dose-response predictive relationship to postpartum depression, highlighting mothers' own early relational trauma as an important risk factor for both mother and infant's postpartum course. Currently, far less is understood about whether maternal ACEs create risk for other postpartum mental health conditions that can negatively impact mother and baby. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to understand the relationship betwe

[Pharmacological treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder].

In addition to trauma-focussed psychotherapy, pharmacological treatment is often unavoidable, especially in patients with severe posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As long as comorbid disorders do not dictate the pharmacotherapy approach, sertraline and paroxetine, along with other off-label prescribable substances approved in Germany, can be used for the treatment of PTSD. Venlafaxine, in particular, has shown good effectiveness in studies, whereas risperidone has shown lower effectiveness in augmentation. Overall, only a small to medium effect size is to be expected for all substances. Ps

Eye movement desensitization and processing for adolescents with major depressive disorder: study protocol for a multi-site randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most common mental disorders in adolescence carrying a serious risk of adverse development later in life. Extant treatments are limited in effectiveness and have high drop-out and relapse rates. A body of literature has been published on the association between distressing/ traumatic experiences and development and maintenance of MDD, but the effectiveness of a trauma-focused treatment approach for MDD has hardly been studied. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy

Heightened healthcare utilization & risk of mental disorders among Veterans with comorbid opioid use disorder & posttraumatic stress disorder.

Although Veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are vulnerable to opioid misuse, there is limited research evaluating the psychosocial and medical sequalae experienced by Veterans with comorbid PTSD and opioid use disorder (OUD). Using data from a nationwide, longitudinal registry of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) Veterans oversampled for PTSD with a 1:1 ratio of men to women, we identified Veterans with lifetime diagnoses of comorbid PTSD and OUD (n = 40), PTSD and non-opioid substance use disorder (SUD; n = 386), PTSD only (n =

Fear and Anxiety Disorders Related to Childbirth: Epidemiological and Therapeutic Issues.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This paper seeks to identify the risk factors of fear of childbirth (FOC) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to birth and reviews the efficacy of their respective screening tools and therapeutic interventions. RECENT FINDINGS: Biofeedback, hypnosis, internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy, and antenatal education are promising treatments for FOC. Training midwives to address traumatic birth experiences could help in preventing PTSD. A shorter more pragmatic screening tool for FOC than the Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire (WDEQ) is needed.

Severity and Symptom Trajectory in Combat-Related PTSD: a Review of the Literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder is increasingly recognized as having a variable course in returning veterans. Relatively few studies have identified predictors of illness duration or severity in this population. This review sought to synthesize the existing literature. RECENT FINDINGS: The existing literature remains limited and heterogeneous. However, several studies identified hyperarousal and pre-deployment dissociation as predictive of disease severity, and re-experiencing as predictive of suicidality in veterans with combat-related PTSD. No other pre-, per

Alcohol use moderates the relationship between symptoms of mental illness and aggression.

Diagnosis of mental illness (MI) inconsistently predicts aggressive behavior although co-occurrence of substance use appears to increase the frequency of aggression in MI populations. We propose that alcohol use should moderate the relationship between mental disorders marked by deficits in self-control and aggression and victimization. In the present study, alcohol use, physical aggression perpetration, physical aggression victimization, injury and psychiatric symptoms were assessed in a sample of 297 substance use disorder patients (102 women; Mage = 38.9, SD = 20.2) recruited from a residen

Two Case Reports: Using Simulated Reattachment to Treat Persistent Complex Bereavement Disorder and PTSD.

These case reports focus on a rapid treatment for persistent complex bereavement disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which appears to activate the mirror neuron network. Simulated reattachment is a technique which has been found to repair phantom limb pain in just a few sessions. The same neuroplasticity that accomplishes phantom pain relief has been found to occur in the treatment of complicated grief and PTSD using similar methods. The simulated reattachment for the client in Case one was found to significantly reduce the symptoms of both complicated grief and obsessive-compul
