Disaster Victim Identification: Psychological Distress and Posttraumatic Stress in Dentists After the 2011 Fukushima Disaster.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlates of psychological responses in dentists who conducted disaster victim identification (DVI) in Fukushima following the 2011 earthquake/tsunami/nuclear disaster. METHOD: Self-report questionnaires were administered to 49 male dentists six to nine months after the disaster. Psychological distress and posttraumatic stress were measured using the General Health Questionnaire-30 (GHQ-30) and Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), respectively. Independent variables included sociodemographic characteristics, participant disaster exposures, DVI-related exposures,

Children enacting idioms of witchcraft and spirit possession as a response to trauma: therapeutically beneficial, and for whom?

This article examines children's enactment of spirit possession idioms and witchcraft in Africa including the meanings such idioms provide and the local healing resources they mobilize. Idioms of haunting spirits in Northern Uganda and witch-children elsewhere in Africa can be interpreted as manifestations of social crises and mass traumatic stress. On the other hand, such idioms also allow children to articulate, reflect upon, and communicate the complex feelings resulting from their precarious positions within families and communities under duress. With the help of Dow's transactional model

Do adolescent offspring of women with PTSD experience higher levels of chronic and episodic stress?

Offspring of mothers with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are at higher risk for a range of negative developmental outcomes, including differing forms of psychopathology. This study suggests that the multigenerational impact of trauma may be partially attributed to increased levels of stress experienced by these offspring during childhood and adolescence. Diagnostic interviews were conducted with over 800 women and their offspring. Experiences of stress were assessed using multiple measures. Results indicate that offspring of mothers with PTSD or high levels of PTSD symptoms experienced h

The potential role of hypocortisolism in the pathophysiology of PTSD and psoriasis.

Different physical, chemical and psychological stressors can provoke a unique but different endocrine response involving activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Inability of adequate compensatory reaction can lead to many disorders. The aim of our study was comparison of cortisol values in diseases provoked by various stressors. Our investigation included 34 posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients, as an example of disorder caused by extremely strong, acute stressful stimulus, 19 psoriatic patients, as an example of chronic stress stimulus and 17 healthy volunteers. Perinatal stressors as predictors of symptoms of posttraumatic stress in mothers of infants at high risk.

We investigated the relationship between the stress of a high-risk birth and the development of symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder in mothers. Six measures of perinatal stressors (gestational age of the baby, birth weight, length of hospital stay for the baby, a postnatal complications rating for the infant, and Apgar scores at 1 and 5 minutes) were used to predict the frequency of posttraumatic stress symptoms. Severity of infant complications, gestational age, and length of stay accounted for 35% of the variance in reports of posttraumatic stress symptoms. Both mothers of premature in

Role of corticosterone in altered neurobehavioral responses to acute stress in a model of compromised hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function.

An organism's capacity to cope with stressful experiences is dependent on its ability to appropriately engage central and peripheral systems, such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, to adapt to changing environmental demands. The HPA axis is a primary neuroendocrine mediator of neural and behavioral responses to stress, and dysfunction of this system is linked to increased risk for developing mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, the mechanisms by which dysregulated HPA function results in abnormal behavioral responses

Mourner's Little Helper: The Use of Psychotropics in the Treatment of Grief-Related Distress From Opium to Opioid Antagonists.

The value of diagnosing the pathologically bereaved, as affected by a distinct disorder from depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder, has long been debated by clinicians and scholars alike. Disputes continue over whether a specific diagnosis would help those struggling after loss, even after prolonged grief disorder gained official status in 2022 as a condition recognized and defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This paper examines how different medical conceptualizations of grief have helped shape the development and use of pharmaceutical interv

Ca2+-stimulated adenylyl cyclases as therapeutic targets for psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders.

As the main secondary messengers, cyclic AMP (cAMP) and Ca2+ trigger intracellular signal transduction cascade and, in turn, regulate many aspects of cellular function in developing and mature neurons. The group I adenylyl cyclase (ADCY, also known as AC) isoforms, including ADCY1, 3, and 8 (also known as AC1, AC3, and AC8), are stimulated by Ca2+ and thus functionally positioned to integrate cAMP and Ca2+ signaling. Emerging lines of evidence have suggested the association of the Ca2+-stimulated ADCYs with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disor

Glymphatic system and psychiatric disorders: need for a new paradigm?

Psychiatric disorders like depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress Disorder have conventionally theorized on alterations in neurotransmitters, receptor pharmacodynamics, and neural connectivity. However, recent research points to a complementary framework involving the glymphatic system, a specialized glial lymphatic pathway that removes metabolic waste products, particularly during deep sleep, through the coordinated action of cerebrospinal fluid, interstitial fluid, and the aquaporin 4 channels of astrocytes. When the glymphatic network is compromised, neurotox

Anhedonia following mild traumatic brain injury in rats: A behavioral economic analysis of positive and negative reinforcement.

Psychiatric disorders affect nearly 50% of individuals who have experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Anhedonia is a major symptom of numerous psychiatric disorders and is a diagnostic criterion for depression. It has recently been appreciated that reinforcement may be separated into consummatory (hedonic), motivational and decisional components, all of which may be affected differently in disease. Although anhedonia is typically assessed using positive reinforcement, the importance of stress in psychopathology suggests the study of negative reinforcement (removal or avoidance of aversiv

Mental health in the two years following hypertensive and normotensive pregnancy: The Postpartum, Physiology, Psychology and Paediatric follow-up (P4) cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum mental illnesses and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are both common, and both associated with adverse maternal and child health outcomes. However, the relationship between them is unclear. This study aimed to investigate prevalence and symptom severity of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 2-years postpartum in women with normal blood pressure (NBP) during pregnancy versus preeclampsia or gestational hypertension (GH). METHODS: Two-years follow-up of the prospective Postpartum, Physiology, Psychology and Paediatric (P4) Cohort Stud

Differential predictors of DSM-5 PTSD and ICD-11 complex PTSD among African American women.

Background: Complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is proposed for inclusion in the ICD-11 as a diagnosis distinct from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), reflecting deficits in affective, self-concept, and relational domains. There remains significant controversy over whether CPTSD provides useful diagnostic information beyond PTSD and other comorbid conditions, such as depression or substance use disorders. Objective: The present study examined differences in psychiatric presentation for three groups: traumatized controls, DSM-5 PTSD subjects, and ICD-11 CPTSD subjects. Method: The

Mental health of nursing students regarding the Moroccan earthquake: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: In addition to the economic and social impact, mental health issues are one of health needs during natural disaster such as earthquake. Thus, surveillance for mental health variables is crucial for public health planning. Nursing students as professional students may be particularly vulnerable to adverse mental health effects after an earthquake because of their potential role in emergency response and the challenges associated with providing medical care in crisis conditions. The aim of this research was to assess the mental health of students after six months of the Moroccan earth

Postwar posttraumatic stress disorder: Prevalence and associated factors among adolescents and youths in Tigray, Ethiopia.

Posttraumatic stress disorder is the most common mental health disorder worldwide, affecting people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. Poor social support, being female, and presence of previous mental illness were associated with Posttraumatic stress disorder in previous studies. Despite studies conducted, the condition is not well known in the war torn Tigray, Ethiopia; therefore, this study assessed the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder and associated factors among school adolescents and youths in Tigray. School based cross sectional study was conducted from Nove

Anhedonia and Substance Use Disorders by Type, Severity, and With Mental Health Disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Anhedonia can accompany substance use disorders (SUDs); its severity may vary by substance type, severity of SUD symptoms, or psychiatric comorbidity. The goal of this study was to clarify the contribution of each. METHODS: Data were from participants aged 18 to 65 years in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions III (n = 30,999; 51% women), a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample reporting lifetime DSM-5 symptoms and lifetime anhedonia. We used logistic regression to test how anhedonia was associated with specific SUDs and psychiatric disor

Heterogeneity in patterns of DSM-5 posttraumatic stress disorder and depression symptoms: Latent profile analyses.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression co-occur frequently following the experience of potentially traumatizing events (PTE; Morina et al., 2013). A person-centered approach to discern heterogeneous patterns of such co-occurring symptoms is recommended (Galatzer-Levy and Bryant, 2013). We assessed heterogeneity in PTSD and depression symptomatology; and subsequently assessed relations between class membership with psychopathology constructs (alcohol use, distress tolerance, dissociative experiences). METHODS: The sample consisted of 268 university students who had exp

Personality traits and combat exposure as predictors of psychopathology over time.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that personality traits have both direct and indirect effects on the development of psychological symptoms, with indirect effects mediated by stressful or traumatic events. This study models the direct influence of personality traits on residualized changes in internalizing and externalizing symptoms following a stressful and potentially traumatic deployment, as well as the indirect influence of personality on symptom levels mediated by combat exposure. METHOD: We utilized structural equation modeling with a longitudinal prospective study of 522 US National Guard

Beyond generalized anxiety disorder: psychometric properties of the GAD-7 in a heterogeneous psychiatric sample.

BACKGROUND: Although developed as a screener for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) in primary care, the GAD-7 is now commonly used as a measure of general anxiety symptoms across various settings and populations. However, little is known about its psychometric properties when used in such heterogeneous samples. We examined the internal consistency, convergent validity, sensitivity and specificity, sensitivity to change, and structure of the GAD-7 in patients receiving brief, intensive CBT treatment in a partial hospital setting. We also examined the properties of a modified version that asses

Posttraumatic stress disorder; combat exposure; and nicotine dependence, alcohol dependence, and major depression in male twins.

Combat exposure is associated with increased risk of psychiatric and substance use disorders in veterans. However, it is not known whether combat exposure independently increases risk for these disorders or whether this association is accounted for by genetic vulnerability common to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This article tests competing explanations for the association of combat exposure and PTSD with nicotine dependence (ND), alcohol dependence (AD), and major depression (MD). Data were obtained from 6099 members of the Vietnam Era Twin Registry, a national registry of male-male t
