Cervical esophagocolic anastomosis leakage caused by a tension pneumothorax after an esophagocoloplasty for caustic esophageal stricture in a child: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal stricture is the most frequent caustic ingestion sequela, leading to dysphagia and malnutrition. The colon is the most commonly used graft for esophageal reconstruction. The most dreadful early complication of colonic interposition is leakage of cervical esophagocolic anastomosis, which can be caused by several factors. Tension pneumothorax has never been reported in the medical literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 5 year-old Black African male patient with retrosternal pain and dysphagia was admitted to the department of surgery. The patient had a history of accidental cau

Functional Outcomes of Tongue Reconstruction After Cancer Extirpation in Different Flaps: Pedicled Versus Free Flaps: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Tongue reconstruction poses significant challenges, involving either pedicle or free flaps, with variations arising from the remnant native tongue tissue or complete neotongue formation. Distinct differences exist between oral tongue and posterior-tongue reconstruction, and the impact of flap nature on functional outcomes remains inconclusive. This study aimed to identify the best flap options for tongue resections based on functional outcomes, help surgeons predict posttreatment quality of life, and explore standardized methods for evaluating swallowing, tongue mobility, speech, a

Gasless versus gas-inflated transaxillary endoscopic thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid carcinoma: a cohort study on surgical outcomes and learning curves.

BACKGROUND: Conventional open thyroidectomy (COT) results in visible neck scarring. Transaxillary endoscopic thyroidectomy (TET) comprises gasless (suspension-assisted) and gas-inflated approaches, both of which offer superior scar concealment. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of these two endoscopic techniques for treating papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). METHODS: A total of 471 patients were stratified into three groups: gasless transaxillary endoscopic thyroidectomy (GTET), gas-inflated transaxillary endoscopic thyroidectomy (GITET), and COT. Comparative analyses inclu

[Intraoperative Monitoring During Cerebellopontine Angle Tumor Removal].

Two types of intraoperative monitoring of the cranial nerve motor function have been widely used during the removal of cerebellopontine angle tumors. The first type involves anatomical mapping through directly stimulating the cranial nerve to confirm its location. The second type involves monitoring motor function preservation through direct stimulation-compound muscle action potential (Ds-CMAP), motor-evoked potential (MEP) using transcranial electrical stimulation, and free-run electromyography (EMG). Particularly for patients with vestibular schwannomas, anatomical mapping is important to c

The Effect of Compensatory Strategies in Reducing to Postoperative Airway Invasion, and Pharyngeal Residue in Patients Undergoing Esophagectomy for Esophageal Cancer.

Few studies have reported the effects of dysphagia management after esophagectomy in esophageal cancer. We aimed to investigate the impact of liquid modification and chin-tuck posture (head flexion) on reducing airway invasion and pharyngeal residue after esophagectomy. We included patients who underwent esophagectomy between June 2017 and January 2020. A videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) was conducted on 5 ml liquid boluses with four viscosities: thin, mildly thickened, moderately thickened, and extremely thickened, all administered in a neutral head position. Trials with thin and mod

Instructional materials to teach airway reflexes: development of cordel literature and comics.

The respiratory system encompasses a complex network of neural mechanisms that regulate not only ventilation and gas exchange but also vital protective reflexes such as coughing, sneezing, and swallowing. These reflexes are clinically relevant and functionally critical for maintaining airway integrity, especially in medical and surgical contexts. Moreover, they offer rich interdisciplinary potential by linking concepts from respiratory physiology, neurophysiology, and motor control. This study aimed to develop supplementary instructional materials using cordel literature, a traditional Brazili
