We here propose a parasympathetic endocrine system (PES) comprised of circulating peptides released from secretory cells in the gut, significantly modulated by vagal projections from the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV). While most of these gut peptides mediate well-described satiety and digestive effects that increase parasympathetic control of digestion (Lee et al., 1994; Gutzwiller et al., 1999; Klok et al., 2007), they also have actions that are far-reaching and increase parasympathetic signaling broadly throughout the body. The actions beyond satiety that peptides like somatostatin

Cardiorenal syndromes (CRS) describe concomitant bidirectional dysfunction of the heart and kidneys in which 1 organ initiates, perpetuates, and/or accelerates decline of the other. CRS are common in heart failure and universally portend worsened prognosis. Despite this heavy disease burden, the appropriate diagnosis and classification of CRS remains problematic. In addition to the hemodynamic drivers of decreased renal perfusion and increased renal vein pressure, induction of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, disruption of balance between…

Chronic distress contributes to the development of obesity and comorbid states. Stress is the disturbance of the complex dynamic equilibrium that all organisms must maintain, and is associated with activation of the Stress system comprising of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the arousal/sympathetic nervous systems. The stress system functions in a baseline circadian fashion and interacts with other systems of the organism to regulate a variety of behavioral, endocrine, metabolic, immune and cardiovascular functions. The experience of perceived or real uncontrollable intense and/or …

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a sleep disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of oxygen desaturation during sleep, representing an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, such as myocardial infarction, stroke, congestive heart failure and resistant hypertension. Several neurohormonal mechanisms have been suggested to account for blood pressure increases, such as sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity, oxidative stress, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) activation, endothelin system activation, and endothelial dysfunction. The aim of this study was to evaluate t…

1. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infects cells in both the immune system and the brain, but these effects are not independent. 2. Research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has been directed at identifying some of the mechanisms by which HIV-1 infects the brain, produces pathology, causes behavioral changes, and alters immune responses. 3. HIV-1-associated peptides have been shown to produce immunological changes without active virus present and there is also evidence that neurological damage may result not from direct viral action, by via excitotoxin producti

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a sympathetic neurotransmitter, abundant in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Acting via its G protein-coupled receptors, Y1R, Y2R and Y5R, NPY regulates many physiological processes, such as stress response, the immune system, and metabolism. NPY and its receptors are also expressed in a variety of malignancies, including rare pediatric tumors, neuroblastoma and Ewing sarcoma, as well as common adulthood cancers of the breast, prostate, liver, and pancreas. While the majority of early studies focused on the role of the NPY system in the regulation of cancer c

AIMS: The cardiovascular system is tightly regulated by the nervous system, yet while cardiac nexus glial cells are known modulators of physiology, the identity and functional significance of glial populations within the vasculature remain poorly defined. We hypothesized that a specialized population of vascular glial cells exists in the adventitia and undergoes molecular and morphological remodelling under pathological stress.
METHODS AND RESULTS: By analysing human and murine single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) datasets, we identified a conserved population of glial cells in large vessel

The (pro)renin receptor (PRR), which binds both renin and prorenin, is a newly discovered component of the renin-angiotensin system that is highly expressed in the central nervous system. The significance of brain PRRs in mediating local angiotensin II formation and regulating blood pressure remains unclear. The current study was performed to test the hypothesis that PRR-mediated, nonproteolytic activation of prorenin is the main source of angiotensin II in the brain. Thus, PRR knockout in the brain is expected to prevent angiotensin II formation and development of deoxycorticosterone acetate-

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) involves the onset of psychiatric symptoms after exposure to a traumatic event. PTSD has an estimated l … od pressure as responses to traumatic slides, sounds and scripts. Some researchers have studied the sympathetic nervous system even further by looking at plasma norepinephrine and 24-hour urinary norepinephrine and found them to be elevated in veterans with PTSD as compared to those without PTSD. PTSD is associated with hyperfunctioning of the central noradrenergic system. …

Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is a multisystem disease that affects the skin and internal organs (i.e., gastrointestinal tract, lung, heart, kidney and peripheral nervous system). In the early phase, lung involvement is characterized by interstitial inflammatory alterations that are detected by bronchoalveolar lavage analysis and high resolution computed tomography (ground glass). As the disease progresses, fibrotic changes become evident and the diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) is impaired. Cardiac involvement in SSc can be manifested as myocardial disease, pericardial disease, conduc

In 1972 a new definition "mediatory stage" in the development of the vegetative nervous system during ontogenesis was introduced and it was stated that at the prenatal stage in the heart, along the course of magistral vessels, and into other organs begin to sprout up at first nervous truncs lacking in mediators, and then, beginning from 8--9 weeks (in man), the mediators appear at first in cholinergic and then in adrenergic plexus (V. N. Shvalev et al., 1972). In clinical embryonal mortality is especially great during the stage of premediatory development, that corresponds to the period of pla

The stellate ganglion (SG) is a part of the sympathetic nervous system that has important regulatory effects on several human tissues and organs in the upper body. SG block and intervention have been clinically and preclinically implemented to manage chronic pain in the upper extremities, neck, head, and upper chest as well as chronic heart failure. However, there has been very limited effort to develop and investigate polymer-based drug delivery systems for local delivery to the SG. In this study, we fabricated red blood cell (RBC) membrane-camouflaged poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) (PL…

UNLABELLED: Neurogenic pulmonary edema (NPE) is a rare but always life-threatening complication in patients with central nervous system lesions. NPE is evident if patients shortly after cerebral lesions suddenly develop pulmonary edema and other causes of the symptoms, such as aspiration of gastric content, congestive heart failure and direct toxic exposure, are ruled out.
METHODS: The current body of literature, partially obtained by computer-guided search (Winspirs) regarding epidemiology, pathophysiology and therapy of NPE was reviewed. Additionally, the case of a patient who developed a s
