Ipsilateral peroneus brevis tendon grafting in a complicated case of traumatic rupture of tibialis anterior tendon.

Ruptures of tibialis anterior tendon can be caused by open, closed, direct, or indirect trauma, as well as spontaneously. Sixty-three cases of tibialis anterior tendon ruptures have been reported in the international literature. The treatment of choice is the surgical end-to-end or side-to-side anastomosis after previous Z-lengthening. The case of a 28-year-old world-class female triathlete who sustained an open laceration of the tibialis anterior tendon from the bicycle chain guard is reported. The primarily applied tendon suture became infected and a wound revision with wide resection of the

Injury risk associated with the transition to minimalist footwear in runners: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Running-related injuries have remained relatively stable over recent decades despite advances in athletic footwear design. This has led to a growing interest in minimalist footwear as a strategy for modifying running biomechanics. However, the effects of its use and the optimal characteristics of the transition period remain controversial, particularly regarding injury risk. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the injury prevalence associated with the transition to minimalist footwear and to identify the main biomechanical and musculoskeletal changes associated with injury risk reported in scie

Early Rehabilitation Versus Conventional Approaches in Post-Traumatic Hand Injuries with Multiple Lesions: Clinical Outcomes and Future Directions.

Background and Objectives: Complex hand injuries often lead to long-term functional impairment and require structured rehabilitation followi … anxiety but showed slower functional recovery. Subgroup analysis revealed that patients with flexor tendon injuries benefited most from early rehabilitation in terms of mobility, strength, and anxiety reduction, while those with multifocal or complex injuries achieved greater long-term pain relief. Conclusions: As rehabilitation continues to evolve, the adoption …

Bilateral Anterior Shoulder Dislocations: A Narrative Review and Case Report.

Simultaneous bilateral anterior shoulder dislocations are extremely rare and typically result from high-energy trauma or seizure activity. Due to their unusual presentation, diagnosis and associated injuries may be missed without thorough assessment and advanced imaging. Here, we present a case report with an associated narrative review of the relevant medical literature. In addition, we propose a treatment algorithm to optimise management of this cohort. A 44-year-old male presented to the emergency department with bilateral shoulder pain and loss of function after lifting a 100 kg weight ove

Jump performance and hop function, kinesiophobia and return to sports are important prognostic factors for a subsequent injury after an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A 2-year follow-up cohort study.

PURPOSE: Finding prognostic factors for a subsequent injury after an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. METHODS: We re-analysed the data of two intervention studies on adults with a hamstrings or quadriceps tendon ACL reconstruction. All participants were prospectively monitored for 24 months. At the end of the individual postsurgery rehabilitation, numerous self-reported and objective functional outcomes were quantified, all potential secondary injuries (primary outcome was the occurrence of secondary ipsi- or contralateral ACL injuries) and all rehabilitation and training meas

Evaluation of muscle strain injury severity in active human body models.

Even though significant efforts in the field of injury detection with finite element active human body models (FE AHBMs) have been made, injuries of the muscle-tendon unit (MTU) have not yet been taken into consideration. Therefore, the goal of this study was to define a muscle strain injury criterion (MSIC) to evaluate the damage sustained by the musculature during muscle driven movement scenarios. The MSIC was derived from biomechanical tests found in the literature and the proposed threshold values were substantiated through a comparison to an estimate of the ultimate tensile strength of hu

Biomechanical Comparison of Proximal Hamstring Reconstruction Using Distal Hamstring Graft Versus Fascia Lata Graft for Treatment of Chronic Hamstring Injury.

BACKGROUND: Surgical reconstruction using autografts is often required in treating chronic proximal hamstring injuries where the hamstring has retracted >5 cm. There is a paucity of evidence that evaluates reconstructive procedures using the 2 most popular autografts, distal hamstring and fascia lata. PURPOSE: To (1) compare failure load and elongation at failure between the proximal hamstring tendon reconstruction with distal hamstring and fascia lata grafts and (2) compare the stiffness between these reconstructions and the native state. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS:

Injuries caused by pigs in Papua New Guinea.

Pigs are intelligent animals that can be formidable adversaries to humans because of their sharp tusks and their ability to attack swiftly. Domestic and feral pigs have an important role in the ecology of village life in Melanesia. A six-year review of all injuries that were caused by pigs that were referred from the villages in Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea, to the Provincial Hospital was completed. Some of the injuries that were seen among the 20 patients who were studied included: three penetrating abdominal injuries with prolapse and strangulation of the intestine; a "sucking" chest

Avulsive axillary artery injury in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.

In addition to neurologic injuries such as peripheral nerve palsy, axillary vessel injury should be recognized as a possible complication of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. Limb lengthening associated with Grammont-type reverse total shoulder arthroplasty places tension across the brachial plexus and axillary vessels and may contribute to observed injuries. The Grammont-type reverse total shoulder arthroplasty prosthesis reverses the shoulder ball and socket, shifts the shoulder center of rotation distal and medial, and lengthens the arm. This alteration of native anatomy converts shearin

Assessment and management of spastic shoulder in patients with brain injury.

Following brain injury, neuromotor disorders of the upper limb are a major cause of functional disability and poor quality of life. In association with paresis and muscle changes, spasticity leads to motor imbalances responsible for joint deformities in general and in the shoulder in particular. In this expert narrative review, we address the assessment and management of spastic shoulder in patients with brain injury, including analysis of the discomfort and the clinical examination. Motor blocks and electromyography are essential, complementary tools. The definition of personalized SMART obje

Posterior Interosseous Neuropathy Related to a Loose Distal Biceps Cortical Button: A Case Series.

Posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) injury is an uncommon yet debilitating complication following distal bicep tendon repair. There are case reports of acute intraoperative PIN injury related to retractor placement, drill trajectory, and nerve incarceration. We report three cases of delayed PIN neuropathy in the setting of a loose cortical button. All patients had resolution of their pain with removal of the cortical button and decompression of the radial tunnel. The purpose of this case series is to: 1) highlight the possibility of a loose cortical bicep button as the cause of proximal forearm

The management of scapholunate wrist instability: a review.

An injury to the ligament linking the scaphoid with the lunate is the most common and and budrened with the most negative sequelae cause of the carpal instability. It occurs most frequently as an associated injury at fractures of the distal radius. A review of methods of treatment of the pathology is provided, according to clinical advancement, duration form original trauma and condition of articular structures. Technical complexity of methods is directly related to severity of intrarticular changes. In early, dynamic instabilities, a simple, temporary scapholunate arthrodesis with K-wires is
