Pulmonary mucormycosis is a relatively rare pulmonary fungal disease, which is difficult to diagnose early and lacks effective treatment. It is seen in patients with hematological malignancies, diabetes mellitus, and immunocompromised states. The diagnosis depends primarily on the detection of fungi in lung tissue. Here, we present a case of a 52-year-old male who has type 2 diabetes mellitus and a past history of treated pulmonary tuberculosis. Clinical diagnosis is difficult in pulmonary mucormycosis, and early diagnosis is needed for this life-threatening infection. Histopathological examin

INTRODUCTION: Household contact screening is a key strategy for early detection of tuberculosis (TB) disease and infection in children exposed to microbiologically confirmed pulmonary TB. The National Tuberculosis Elimination Program data forms the vital foundation for national policy decisions. Complementary facility-based evaluations remain valuable for capturing region-specific nuances, particularly in geographically challenging areas. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of TB disease and TB infection among pediatric household contacts and assess associated demographic and clinical

BACKGROUND: Data characterizing risk factors and long-term outcome studies on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated pulmonary hypertension (PH) in Africa are lacking.
METHODS: The Pan African Pulmonary Hypertension Cohort, a multinational registry of 254 consecutive patients diagnosed with PH (97% of African descent) from 9 centers in 4 African countries was implemented. We compared baseline characteristics and 3-year survival of an HIV-infected cohort newly diagnosed with PH (PH/HIV+) to an HIV-uninfected cohort with PH (PH/HIV-).
RESULTS: One hundred thirty-four participants with P

Unclear pulmonary infiltrates with eosinophilia, a problem of differential diagnosis. HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 60-year-old woman was admitted for the diagnosis of pulmonary infiltrates. A year before she had been exposed to tuberculosis when working as a doctor in Manila, the Philippines. Ten days before admission she had spent 10 days in Sao Paulo, Brazil. On admission she complained of fatigue, dry cough and nocturnal sweating. Her body temperature was 37.8; C. At auscultation of the chest fine rales were heard with diminished percussion sounds over both lungs. INVESTIGATIONS: The c

During the period 1969 to 1974, 41 patients having cultures positive for aspergillus were seen on the thoracic surgical services of the University of Maryland and Mt. Wilson State Hospitals. Intracavitary mycetoma was present in 36 patients. In 32 the underlying disease was chronic cavitary tuberculosis, 5 had decreased immunity due to other diseases, and in 3 no underlying disease was noted. One final patient developed a mycetoma following repair of tetralogy of Fallot. Hemoptysis, the predominant symptom, occurred in 23 patients, all of whom were from the group with intracavitary mycetoma. H

Hydatid disease of the lungs is caused by larval cysts of the Echinococcus tapeworm. Pulmonary cysts may occasionally invade bronchi or pleura as a result of coughing, trauma, or elevated intra-abdominal pressure. We present the case of a patient evaluated for non-resolving pneumonia whose radiographic and bronchoscopic findings were strikingly similar to those seen in pulmonary tuberculosis with endobronchial invasion; he was ultimately diagnosed with pulmonary echinococcosis. This case underscores the importance of considering unusual diagnoses even when typical features of more common condi

We describe a case of giant pulmonary aspergilloma in a 79-year old man. He had undergone an operation for pulmonary tuberculosis of the right lung at the age of 49 years. His chest ragiograph showed a large fungus ball in the right upper lung field. Taking his age and pulmonary condition into consideration, we performed a cavernostomy and fungus ball resection to prevent life-threatening hemoptysis. The postoperative course was satisfactory and without complication. Cavernostomy may be an alternative choice in high-risk aspergilloma patients.

Two cases of leptospirosis presenting with cough and haemoptysis are described, together with their pulmonary radiological features. The various radiological chest findings are reviewed together with the pathogenesis and pathology of the lesions. Although the pulmonary involvement due to a haemorrhagic pneumonitis in leptospirosis is usually an incidental finding, occasionally it is the most pronounced clinical manifestation of the disease, and may present a difficult diagnostic problem. It has to be considered in the differential diagnosis of diffuse miliary infiltrations or consolidation see

INTRODUCTION: Hepatic tuberculosis is a rare disease entity even in endemic areas of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is usually accompanied by pulmonary tuberculosis or enteric tuberculosis. Due to the non-specific clinical symptoms and imaging features may lead to misdiagnosis and even unnecessary surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old woman presented with complaints of abdominal pain for the past 2 months. The patient was diagnosed with a solitary hepatic tuberculosis abscess that was identified by abdominal CT and liver biopsy. The patient was started on anti-tuberculous therapy (isoniaz

Several changes have been observed in the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic modalities and treatment of tuberculosis. Emergence of HIV epidemic and drug resistance have posed significant challenges. With increase in the number of diseased adults and spread of HIV infection, the infection rates in children are likely to increase. It is estimated that in developing countries, the annual risk of tuberculosis infection in children is 2.5%. Nearly 8-20% of the deaths caused by tuberculosis occur in children. Extra pulmonary tuberculosis has increased over last two decades. HIV infec

BACKGROUND: BCG vaccine has shown consistently high efficacy against childhood tuberculous meningitis and miliary tuberculosis, but variable efficacy against adult pulmonary tuberculosis and other mycobacterial diseases. We assess and compare the costs and effects of BCG as an intervention against severe childhood tuberculosis in different regions of the world.
METHODS: We calculated the number of tuberculous meningitis and miliary tuberculosis cases that have been and will be prevented in all children born in 2002, by combining estimates of the annual risk of tuberculosis infection, the prop

BACKGROUND: Spinal tuberculosis is a rare condition that can result in significant neurological impairments. It is typically classified into two main types based on the anatomical involvement: parenchymal and meningeal. However, existing studies have not provided systematic reports that clarify the differences in aetiology, pathophysiological mechanisms, and clinical presentations between these two types.
METHODS: This retrospective study includes 107 patients diagnosed with intracranial tuberculosis accompanied by spinal tuberculosis via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) between May 2019 and

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis drug-resistance becomes common in sub-Saharan Africa; however, very few data are available in Burkina Faso. The aim of this study is to assess the acquired resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex strains identified in TB patients to four first-line drugs in Ouagadougou.
METHODS: One hundred and ten (110) pulmonary tuberculosis patients with acid-fast bacilli-positive sputum and in situation of failure, relapse, or treatment abandonment were included in the study. Ninety six strains, including 92 (95.8%) M. tuberculosis and 4 (4.2%) M. africanum, were isolated

Pancreatic tuberculosis is a rare clinical entity, presenting as malignancy mimicking pancreatic mass. Therefore, it represents a diagnostic challenge. To date, ten cases have been reported in Korea. I report an additional case and review all Korean reports about pancreatic tuberculosis. A 57-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a 2.2x1.2 cm cystic mass in pancreatic body. She was followed for nine months, at which time a cystic mass was enlarged to 3.3x2.2 cm in size on the CT. An exploratory laparotomy was performed for the accurate diagno

Pediatric tuberculosis contributes significantly to the burden of TB disease worldwide. In order to achieve the goal of eliminating TB by 2050, an effective TB vaccine is urgently needed to prevent TB transmission in children. BCG vaccination can protect children from the severe types of TB such as TB meningitis and miliary TB, while its efficacy against pediatric pulmonary TB ranged from no protection to very high protection. In recent decades, multiple new vaccine candidates have been developed, and shown encouraging safety and immunogenicity in the preclinical experiments. However, the limi

Early diagnosis of TB is essential for community health and infection control, as well as for starting appropriate therapy for patients. Early detection of MDR is essential for the same reasons, plus the fact that currently a very high percentage of MDR patients die, especially in developing countries. Both genotypic and phenotypic methods allowing assessment of MDR tuberculosis on the bacilli isolated from fluids of infected patients are available, but these tests are lengthy (6-16 weeks) and require infected body fluids, which are not always easily assessable. Patients presenting pulmonary T
