Energy metabolism and obesity stratified by BMI: impact on lipid oxidation, a cross-sectional observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a complex disorder of nutritional-metabolic factors, involving, among others, the environment, mental health, and physical activity levels. Biological and social aspects are fundamental to understanding the genesis and progression of obesity. Energy metabolism, particularly resting energy expenditure (REE) and substrate oxidation, plays a key role in maintaining energy balance. REE reflects the energy required to sustain vital functions such as cellular metabolism, organ function, and homeostasis. Variations in body mass index (BMI) are associated with differences in R

Introducing artificial intelligence and sperm epigenetics in the fertility clinic: a novel foundation for diagnostics and prediction modelling.

Worldwide, infertility is a rising problem. A couple's lifestyle, age and environmental exposures can interfere with reproductive health. The scientific field tries to understand the various processes how male and female factors may affect fertility, but translation to the clinic is limited. I here emphasize potential reasons for failure in optimal treatment planning and especially why current prediction modelling falls short. First, Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) has become a mainstream solution for couples experiencing infertility, while potential causes of infertility remain unexplo

Dynamic Olefinic Bond Restructuring in Coordination Polymers Enables Precision Photocycloaddition.

Biological systems adapt their conformations and reactivities in response to diverse external cues, inspiring the development of synthetic materials with similar responsiveness for controlled chemical transformations. Here we report a flexible coordination polymer, [{Cd4(OCH3-BPEB)4(OBA)4}·7DEF]n (CP1, OCH3-BPEB = 4,4'-((1E,1'E)-(2,5-dimethoxyl-1,4-phenylene)bis(ethene-2,1-diyl))dipyridine, H2OBA = 4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid), DEF = N,N-diethylformamide), capable of multistimuli-induced restructuring of otherwise inactive olefinic bond pairs to achieve regioselective [2+2] photocycloadditions. Engineering of 1,4-Butanediol and Adipic Acid Metabolism in Pseudomonas taiwanensis for Upcycling to Aromatic Compounds.

The overwhelming amount of plastic produced is an unprecedented challenge for humanity due to the lack of end-of-life solutions for heterogeneous plastic wastes. One possibility is feedstock recycling of mixed plastics and complex polymers with subsequent biological funnelling and upcycling. Major depolymerisation products of common plastics such as polyurethanes, polyesters and polyamides include aliphatic dicarboxylic acids or diols such as adipic acid (AA) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO), which can be metabolised by engineered Pseudomonas putida strains. However, the spectrum of upcycled compounds

Environmental toxicity of tire wear and latex particle leachates in zebrafish embryos: Oxidative stress and ferroptosis as key mechanisms.

Microrubber, a subset of microplastics, has raised global concerns due to its persistence and ecological risks in aquatic systems. This study systematically compared the toxicity of leachates (0, 0.5, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 g/L) from tire wear particles (TWP) and latex particles (LAP) in zebrafish embryos for 5 days, integrating physiological endpoints, oxidative stress biomarkers, and transcriptomic profiling. LAP leachate exhibited significantly higher toxicity than TWP, causing increased mortality (100 % vs. 56.3 %), delayed hatching (0 % vs. 35.4 %), and severe malformations (e.g., tail and s

Intersectoral interventions: integration for impact on preterm birth.

PROGRESS: The last two decades have seen a growing focus on intersectoral interventions to improve maternal and newborn health and well-being outcomes, as reflected in efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Preterm births are linked to cross-sectoral determinants that affect health outcomes and human capital across the life-course, necessitating an intersectoral approach that addresses these multifaceted challenges. PROGRAMMATIC PRIORITIES: Recognizing that social, biological and economic determinants significantly infl

Evaluation of kynurenine and tryptophan metabolism in bladder cancer: Diagnostic and prognostic implications of IDO1 polymorphism.

OBJECTIVE: The tryptophan-kynurenine (TRP-KYN) pathway, regulated by indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1), plays a pivotal role in tumor immune escape. Altered TRP catabolism and IDO1 gene polymorphisms may influence bladder cancer (BC) behavior through immune metabolic mechanisms. To evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of plasma and urinary KYN/TRP ratios and the IDO1 rs10089084 (G > C) polymorphism in patients with BC. METHODS: In this case-control study, plasma and urine samples were obtained from 58 patients with BC and 70 healthy controls before diagnostic cystoscopy. TRP and KY

Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis: Comprehensive Review and Exploration of the Dual Potential of Cyclodextrins in Therapeutic Optimization.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a histopathological pattern of segmental glomerulosclerosis that arises from diverse primary and secondary causes. Primary (idiopathic) FSGS is rare and is often linked to intrinsic podocyte injury, while secondary forms are more prevalent and may reflect adaptative, toxic, genetic, or viral etiologies. This pattern of injury can lead to progressive renal dysfunction and, in some cases, end-stage kidney disease. The pathophysiology is multifactorial and includes direct podocyte injury (e.g., genetic defects, mechanical or toxic injury), immune-media

Nursing support for testicular sperm aspiration and intracytoplasmic sperm injection in patients with high paraplegia: a retrospective case series.

BACKGROUND: High paraplegia, primarily affecting young men during their reproductive years, often results in ejaculatory dysfunction and infertility. Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) combined with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) offers a viable path to biological parenthood for this population. However, evidence on nursing strategies supporting such procedures is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and psychosocial outcomes of patients with high paraplegia due to spinal cord injury who underwent TESA-ICSI and explore the effectiveness of specialized nursing interventio

Late-onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystem autoimmune rheumatic disease (ARD) that results from the dysregulation of multiple innate and adaptive immune pathways. Late-onset SLE (Lo-SLE) is the term used when the disease is first diagnosed after 50-65 years, though the standard age cut-off remains undefined. Defining "late-onset" as lupus with onset after 50 years is more biologically plausible as this roughly corresponds to the age of menopause. Lo-SLE comprises nearly 20% of all cases of lupus. With advancing age, the female predominance of lupus declines to nearly 4:1 to even 1.1:1

Exploring the potential of enterovirus A71 fomite and respiratory transmission in a hamster model.

Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is a common pathogen of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) frequently contracted by young children. The virus commonly transmits by faecal contamination, and possibly through direct or indirect contact via fomite and respiratory routes. Transmission via fomites and the respiratory route via airborne or droplets is not clearly understood. Mouse-adapted EV-A71 (MP4 EV-A71) was used to study the effect of EV-A71 fomite-induced and respiratory transmission in one-week-old hamsters. For fomite transmission, the hamsters were exposed to coins contaminated with 104 50% tiss

HIV/AIDS Mortality Trends in Peru: A Natural Experiment of COVID-19's Disruption and Health Disparities (2017-2024).

Peru's already concentrated HIV epidemic confronted an unprecedented shock with the arrival of SARS-CoV-2. With a natural experiment design, leveraging 96 months (2017-2024) of aggregate national death-certificate data (n = 9,917), we applied join-point regression, attributable-fraction calculations of deaths excess, and Newey-West-corrected interrupted time series models to disentangle indirect service disruptions from direct viral coinfection on HIV/AIDS mortality. Using population-level data, we estimated both relative and absolute measures of disparity, providing novel insights into popula

The first draft genome of Cryptosporidium serpentis reveals metabolic divergence from intestinal Cryptosporidium species.

Cryptosporidium serpentis is a host-adapted Cryptosporidium species that infects ectothermic reptiles, including snakes and lizards. In addition, C. serpentis is one of the few Cryptosporidium species that parasitize the stomach of the hosts. To date, the genomic data for gastric Cryptosporidium species are exclusively available for Cryptosporidium andersoni and Cryptosporidium muris, both of which infect warm-blooded hosts. To enhance our understanding of genomic features of C. serpentis, we undertook the Illumina-based whole genome sequencing of four C. serpentis isolates, and generated the

Building an Adverse Outcome Pathway network for COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic generated large amounts of data on the disease pathogenesis leading to a need for organizing the vast knowledge in a succinct manner. Between April 2020 and February 2023, the CIAO consortium exploited the Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) framework to comprehensively gather and systematically organize published scientific literature on COVID-19 pathology. The project considered 24 pathways relevant for COVID-19 by identifying essential key events (KEs) leading to 19 adverse outcomes observed in patients. While an individual AOP defines causally linked perturbed KEs towards a
