Twenty-four hours after an active anaphylactic shock induced by inhalation of antigen in conscious guinea pigs sensitized by a large dose of ovalbumin in complete Freund's adjuvant, a noteworthy bronchial inflammation, characterized by increased numbers of neutrophils, mononuclear cells and eosinophils in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, was observed. Some drugs administered after the anaphylactic shock were investigated using this model. Disodium cromoglycate primarily reduced the number of mononuclear cells and eosinophils. Dexamethasone and theophylline decreased the number of eosinophils.

The role of mast cells in active and passive anaphylactic shock was examined using the WBB6F1 mouse, a genetically mast cell-deficient strain. Lethal anaphylactic shock occurred at high incidence rates in mice actively sensitized to bovine serum albumin (BSA). The reaction was specific to BSA since the shock could not be elicited by human or guinea pig serum albumin in these animals. On rare occasions, reproducible exercise-induced anaphylactic reactions (EIA) occur in some patients only after certain foods have been eaten before exercise, yet eating these foods alone or exercising alone causes no symptoms. A prospective study of dextran-induced anaphylactoid reactions (DIAR) in 5745 gynaecological and obstetric patients who received dextran 70 solution intravenously while undergoing major surgery revealed 8 patients who had Grade I or II reactions and 7 patients who had Grade III or IV reactions. This report describes an activity in serum from mice that were contact-sensitized with picryl chloride (PCl) 1 to 4 days earlier. Any condition that decreases blood volume, cardiac output, or peripheral vasomotor tone sufficiently to impair tissue perfusion can cause shock. One hundred twenty-five hematologic relapses of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) were treated with a four-drug reinduction regimen consisting of L-asparaginase, vincristine, daunomycin, and prednisone (Asp-VDP). 14 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and 6 with lymphosarcoma were treated in 13 cures with 300-500 IU/kg bodyweight/day of L-asparaginase and in 11 cures with 501-760 IU/kg/day. An increase of all fractions of immunoglobulins with maximal values at the end of the cures was observed in the group treated with low doses.
