Case report: ischial stress fracture non-union in a college football player.

Stress fractures are common injuries associated with repetitive high-impact activities, often in high-level athletes and military recruits. Although predominantly occurring in the lower extremities, stress fractures may occur wherever there is a sudden increase in frequency or intensity of activity, thereby overloading the yield point of the local bone environment. Ischial stress fractures are a rarely diagnosed cause of pain around the hip and pelvis. Often, patients present with buttock pain with activity, which can be misdiagnosed as proximal hamstring tendonitis or avulsion. Here, we repor

Bioabsorbable plates and screws fixation in mandible fractures: clinical retrospective research during a 10-year period.

We present the basic guidelines for the safe fixation of a mandible fracture using a bioabsorbable system with less strength than the metallic system based on our 10 years of experience. We conducted a retrospective review of 75 patients who had undergone fixation using a bioabsorbable system for a mandible fracture. We analyzed the method of fixation and the size and thickness of the plates and screws that were selected depending on the mandible's fracture site.Minor complications including intraoral wound disruptions and infections occurred in 12 (16%) patients, and 2 (2.7%) patients among 10

Reduction malarplasty using an L-shaped osteotomy through intraoral and sideburns incisions.

The slender, oval-shaped face is considered to be attractive in East Asia. To obtain the ideal contour of the midface, reduction malarplasty has been popularized in oriental countries in recent years. This report describes a surgical technique for reduction of the zygomatic body and arch. After labiobuccal vestibular incisions are made, the anterior zygomatic body and lateral orbital rim are exposed by subperiosteal dissection. Thereafter, an L-shaped osteotomy is performed. Two parallel horizontal osteotomies are made in the anterior part of the zygomatic body, and the middle bone segment is

Use of a retrograde femoral nail in a patient with McCune-Albright syndrome.

McCune-Albright Syndrome is a rare condition characterized by endocrine abnormalities, precocious puberty, pigmented skin lesions and polyostotic fibrous dysplasia with consequent fractures and limb deformity. Patients with this syndrome might have had multiple operations on a limb and might also have extensive internal fixation in-situ. We review the case of a 41-year-old woman with McCune-Albright syndrome, who presented with a pathological fracture of her left femur below a long plate and screws. Our management of this challenging problem included the use of a retrograde femoral nail, which

[Postero-medial elastic stable intramedullary nailing for anteriorly displaced distal diaphyso-metaphyseal fractures of the radius in children].

PURPOSE: To suggest a mechanically satisfying method to stabilize the unfrequent distal diaphyso-metaphyseal fractures of the radius, when they are anteriorly displaced, avoiding the classical use of an anterior osteosynthesis by plate and screws. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten cases of postero medial Elastic Stable Intramedullary Nailing are presented. Technically, a small postero medial approach with gentle retraction of extensors tendons is used. Then a hole is drilled through the postero medial metaphysis of the distal radius. A present wire is introduced intramedullary, directing its elastic

[Diagnostic possibilities and treatment approaches for fracture of the of the intercondylar eminence in the growth period].

Between 1970 and 1993 29 fractures of the intercondylar eminence were seen in children with almost the same number of cases showing no or minor displacement as those requiring open reduction for major dislocation. Combined knee injury must be suspected the higher the patient's age and the more pronounced the displacement of the fragment. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has gained diagnostic predominance. Arthroscopy remains important for surgical management, especially of associated meniscus and cartilage damage. Early puncture of hemarthrosis is essential. Closed management is the therapy fo

Primary bipolar arthroplasty or total hip arthroplasty for the treatment of unstable intertrochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures in elderly patients.

One hundred independently mobile patients over the age of 75 who had an unstable intertrochanteric or subtrochanteric fracture were treated with primary prosthetic replacement. In all patients a cemented femoral component with diaphyseal support was used. A bipolar arthroplasty was performed in 91 patients and a total hip arthroplasty in 9 patients because of associated coxarthrosis. The functional results according to the Merle d'Aubigné hip rating scale were excellent, very good or good in 78% of the hips. The dislocation rate of 44.5% in the patient group who underwent total hip arthroplast

Reliability of a CT reconstruction for preoperative surgical planning in the arthroscopic Latarjet procedure.

PURPOSE: The arthroscopic Latarjet procedure has provided reliable results in the treatment of anterior shoulder instability. However, this procedure remains technically challenging and is related to several complications. The morphology of the coracoid and the glenoid are inconsistent. Inadequate coracoid and glenoid preparing may lead to mismatching between their surfaces. Inadequate screws lengthening and orientation are a major concern. Too long screws can lead to suprascapular nerve injuries or hardware irritation, whereas too short screws can lead to nonunions, fibrous unions or migratio

Effect of reduced orbital rotation on image quality and intra-articular screw detection in intraoperative 3D imaging of proximal humerus plate fixation: a cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: Proximal humerus fractures are common injuries in the elderly, frequently treated with plate osteosynthesis. Intraoperative 2D fluoroscopy provides only limited visualization of the humeral head's complex anatomy, often leading to undetected intra-articular screw perforations. Intraoperative 3D imaging provides enhanced assessment but is technically limited by the confined operating field and the risk of collisions between the C-arm, patient, and operating table. This cadaveric study systematically investigated how progressive reduction of orbital rotation during intraoperative 3D

Bicortical Lateral Plate Screw Placement Reduces Subsidence Risk in Patients Undergoing Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion.

INTRODUCTION: Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion (LLIF) is an effective, minimally invasive option to decompress the neural elements; however, subsidence remains a risk postoperatively. The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of lateral plate screw placement techniques on postoperative subsidence. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted at 2 quaternary referral centers from 2014 to 2022. Radiographic subsidence, bony fusion, and screw length were measured on follow-up imaging. Continuous and categorical variables were compared with two-sided independent-samples T-tests and Chi

Comparison of two plates and screw osteosynthesis configurations in a rat model of critical sized femoral defects to reduce implant related failures.

This study aimed to compare the failure rates of two different sizes of plates and screws to stabilize critical-sized (7 mm) femoral defects in male Sprague‒Dawley rats (aged 10 weeks). Femoral defects were stabilized with either a 4-hole plate (length 29 mm, thickness 1 mm, 10 rats, Group 1) and 4 cortical screws (diameter 2 mm) or with a 6-hole plate (length 30 mm, thickness 0.6 mm, 9 rats, Group 2) and 4 cortical screws (diameter 1.5 mm). A polymethylmethacrylate spacer was inserted into the defects to reproduce the first stage of the induced membrane technique. Radiographic evaluations, ma

Biomechanical evaluation of implant techniques for ipsilateral femoral neck and shaft fractures: A finite element analysis.

PURPOSE: No consensus has been reached regarding the treatment of ipsilateral femoral neck fractures and femoral shaft fractures (FNF + FSF). This study discusses the stability and differences between multiple single- and dual-implant strategies in the treatment of FNF + FSF and aims to provide a theoretical reference for clinical applications. METHODS: Based on multi-sample finite element analysis, models of basicervical FNF (bFNFs Pauwels III) combined with three different FSFs (proximal (PFSF), middle (MFSF), and distal (DFSF)) were developed. Five implant strategies were established: (A)

Pelvic Incidence Changes in Patients With Adult Spinal Deformity Following S2AI Fixation: Is the Hip Joint Involved?

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the hip joints are involved in PI changes and explore its implications on pre-to-post-PI changes. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Pelvic incidence (PI) is a key parameter in formulating surgical strategies for adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients requiring spinopelvic fixation. Emerging evidence of PI variability has challenged traditional formulations based on PI being a fixed parameter. Serving as a hinge between spine and lower extremity, the hip joints are involved in the compensation for spinal sagittal imbalance, yet its

Open reduction and internal fixation of mandibular condyle fractures using AUTOFIX 2.0® cannulated compression screw system: A technical innovation with intraoperative CT-scan.

Condylar process fractures remain a matter of ongoing controversy in maxillofacial surgery because of variety of opinions and proposed treatment modalities offered in the literature. The trend is toward open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) whenever there is displacement or dislocation combined with unstable occlusal conditions. The fundamental treatment goals are anatomical fixation and early return to function. However, ORIF of a fractured condyle carries significant risks, including facial nerve damage, and presents challenges in reducing and stabilizing the fractured segment in an ar
