The authors have studied the melanocytic population in oral mucosa (Dihydorxyphenyl alanine, silver impregnation, hematoxilin-eosin) of 20 patients (10 with Lichen ruber planus and 10 with Alopecia areata). The melanocytic population in oral mucosa ranges from 605 to 1555 cells per m2 (964 +/- 312 on the average). Normal population, in case of lichen planus of oral mucosa, is disturbed in the regions of the pathological process. The deviations established are discussed.

These studies provide information on the changes in the ultrastructure in the caudate nucleus of aged cats. The major finding was that there was a decrease in the density of synapses in caudate neuropil. This decrease occurred in animals after 3 years of age and remained relatively constant in older animals. In conjunction with this change a population of unusually long synapses also occurred. The antral gastrin-producing cells (G-cells) have been identified by the indirect immunoperoxidase technique in two antrum preparations removed due to a recurrent duodenal and gastric ulcer. Morphometric principles were applied to the G-cells with determination of their volume density, numerical density, and mean cell volume. The study showed that within-observer variation, between-observer variation and within-patient variation were negligible, provided at least 200 G-cells were counted. The entire mucosa from 30 normal frontal sinuses was removed, stained by the whole mount method, and the density of goblet cells and mucous glands was determined. Eighty-five samples of pleural fluid obtained from 76 patients with biopsy-proven tuberculous pleurisy were examined cytologically. Numerous reactive mesothelial cells were present in only 1,2% of specimens examined. In contrast, 65,3% of pleural fluid aspirates obtained from a control group of patients in congestive cardiac failure contained marked mesothelial exfoliation. The suggestion that the presence of numerous, often highly reactive mesothelial cells in a pleural aspirate makes the diagnosis of tuberculosis unlikely is confirmed.

Leucocyte volume histograms were obtained in 12 cases of B-chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (B-CLL), two cases of B-prolymphocytic leukaemia (B-PLL) and two cases of hairy-cell leukaemia (HCL) by means of a Coulter model ZBl linked to a channelyser.
