Cervical proprioception plays a key role in postural control, but its specific contribution is controversial. Postural impairment was shown in whiplash injuries without demonstrating the sole involvement of the cervical spine. The consequences of degenerative cervical spine diseases are underreported in posture-related scientific literature in spite of their high prevalence. No report has focused on the two different mechanisms underlying cervicobrachial pain: herniated discs and spondylosis. This study aimed to evaluate postural control of two groups of patients with degenerative cervical spi

BACKGROUND: Jefferson (C1) fractures are rare cervical spine injuries that usually do not result in cranial nerve (CN) impairment. However, case reports of Collet-Sicard syndrome (impairment of CNs IX-XII) and impairment of CNs IX, X, and XII have been reported. All reported cases involved adult patients in high-impact collisions, such as motor vehicle accidents or falls. To our knowledge, a Jefferson fracture with selective CN impairment due to a low-energy, sports-related injury in a pediatric patient has not been reported.
METHODS: Chart and radiographic data for a single case were reviewe

Postoperative airway compromise due to laryngopharyngeal edema is a potentially serious adverse event associated with anterior cervical spine surgery. The reported incidence of this complication has varied from 1.2% to 6.1%, with a higher incidence following multi-level surgery. The relevant literature on airway compromise following anterior cervical spine surgery is reviewed.

Cavernous malformations (CMs) are found throughout the CNS but are relatively uncommon in the spine. In this report, the authors describe a giant CM with the imaging appearance of an aggressive, invasive, expansive tumor in the cervical spine. The intradural extramedullary portion of the tumor originated from a cervical nerve root; histologically, the lesion was identified as an intraneural CM. Most of the tumor extended into the paraspinal tissues. The tumor was also epidural, intraosseous, and osteolytic and had completely encased cervical nerve roots, peripheral nerves, branches of the brac

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament is a common cause of cervical myelopathy, and controversy remains regarding surgical options. Between January 2004 and December 2007, a total of 164 patients with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament in the cervical spine who underwent surgical treatment at the authors' institution were included in this study. The choice of surgical option was based on pathological extent and cervical alignment. Short-segment pathology was treated via the anterior approach and long-segment pathology via the posterior approach. When the posterio

Primary intramedullary germinoma arising in the cervical spinal cord is a very rare entity. We present one such case arising in a young man who presented with radiculopathy and myelopathy, which was partially excised. Upon histological confirmation, he was treated successfully with radiotherapy alone. To our knowledge, this is only the second reported case worldwide which is histologically confirmed. Although extremely rare, differential diagnosis for intramedullary spinal cord tumor should include germinoma.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spondylotic radiculopathy is a commonly encountered and frequently occurring disease. Traditional Chinese osteopathic manipulations may have better therapeutic efficacy than that of other methods in treating patients with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical therapeutic effects of cervical fixed-point traction manipulation in treating patients with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy.
DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS: A prospective, randomized controlled trial was adopted. Eighty-four patients with cervical spondylotic rad

Multilevel cervical spondylosis resulting in myelopathy is a complex condition to treat surgically. Several anterior and posterior procedures have been described. Cervical laminaplasty is a procedure that provides multilevel posterior cord decompression while attempting to eliminate the postoperative development of instability and kyphosis by retaining the posterior elements. Because laminaplasty does not involve arthrodesis, more postoperative motion is preserved and early range of motion is encouraged to avoid stiffness. Although laminaplasty is a relatively straightforward procedure, unders
