Co-designing, evaluating and implementing online supportive care for endometriosis in Australia: study protocol for the hybrid type 1 effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and implementation randomised controlled trial of the CodeEndo program.

INTRODUCTION: Endometriosis is a chronic condition affecting up to 11% of people presumed female at birth by the age of 44 years, characterised by the growth of tissue similar to the lining of the uterus on other organs. Endometriosis significantly impacts health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and imposes a substantial burden on both individuals and the healthcare system. International guidelines recommend the interdisciplinary management of endometriosis due to its significant biopsychosocial burden; however, research aimed at exploring psychological approaches for endometriosis is limited.

Polycythemia and its determinants among children with unoperated cyanotic congenital heart disease at Tikur Anbessa specialized hospital, Ethiopia: observational cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Polycythemia is a physiologic adaptive response to hypoxia seen in children with cyanotic congenital heart disease (Cyanotic CHD). Globally, due to timely cyanotic CHD interventions, polycythemia is underreported or understudied. Timely identification and treatment of polycythemia among unoperated cyanotic CHDs avoids serious hematologic and related complications. This study aimed to determine the burden and factors associated with polycythemia among patients with cyanotic CHD enrolled in chronic care. METHODS: This observational cross-sectional study used a semi-structured questi

Repeated Exposures to Air Travel-Relevant Hypobaria Induce Anxiety-Like Behavior and Alter Functional Connectivity and White Matter Integrity in a Ferret Model of Traumatic Brain Injury.

Under-vehicle blast (UVB) caused by landmine detonation induces a distinct traumatic brain injury (TBI) and can be accompanied by head impact. Injured soldiers often undergo multiple flights after injury to access medical care and return to duty. Previous work has shown that low air pressure during air travel (hypobaria [HB]) exacerbates neurological injury, but the effects of one or more HB exposures on chronic brain injury are unknown. We hypothesized that multiple HB exposures after TBI would result in worse outcomes than 0-1 exposures. Sedated male ferrets underwent UVB and controlled cort

The Impact of the Danish National Smoking Ban From 2007 on the Incidence of Eight Smoking-related Diseases: A Nationwide Register-based Interrupted Time Series Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has documented the effect of comprehensive smoking bans on preventing various adverse health outcomes in the years post-ban. In 2007, Denmark implemented a national smoking ban that prohibited indoor smoking in workplaces and public settings, although only partial restrictions applied in specific premises such as small bars, one-person offices, and in psychiatric units. We tested the hypothesis that the implementation of the national smoking ban was associated with a decrease in incidence of smoking-related morbidity in the Danish population compared to the pre-ba

Chronic polytherapy after myocardial infarction: the trade-off between hospital and community-based providers in determining adherence to medication.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of chronic polytherapy in reducing readmissions and death after myocardial infarction (MI) have been clearly shown. However, real-world evidence shows poor medication adherence and large geographic variation, suggesting critical issues in access to optimal care. Our objectives were to measure adherence to polytherapy, to compare the amount of variation attributable to hospitals of discharge and to community-based providers, and to identify determinants of adherence to medications. METHODS: This is a population-based study. Data were obtained from the information syste

Permanent Supportive Housing and Specialized Co-Occurring Disorders Wraparound Services for Homeless Individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Among individuals experiencing chronic homelessness, there is a high rate of co-occurring mental health and substance use, which has traditionally been addressed through the delivery of permanent supportive housing along with substance use and mental health services. However, this population often has difficulty engaging in treatment for co-occurring disorders, which can result in exacerbation of symptoms and housing loss. Maintaining Independence and Sobriety Through Systems Integration, Outreach, and Networking (MISSION) is a co-occurring mental health and substance use wraparound

Risk factors for osteoporotic fractures in persons with spinal cord injuries and disorders.

UNLABELLED: Clinical risk factors for fracture were explored among Veterans with a spinal cord injury. At the end of 11 years of follow-up, the absolute risk of fracture was approximately 20 %. Among the clinical and SCI-related factors explored, a prior history of fracture was strongly associated with incident fracture. INTRODUCTION: Few studies to date have comprehensively addressed clinical risk factors for fracture in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors for incident osteoporotic fractures in persons with a SCI that can be easily de

Predictors of failure of empiric outpatient antibiotic therapy in emergency department patients with uncomplicated cellulitis.

BACKGROUND: Despite several expert panel recommendations and cellulitis treatment guidelines, there are currently no clinical decision rules to assist clinicians in deciding which emergency department (ED) patients should be treated with oral antibiotics and which patients require intravenous (IV) therapy at first presentation of cellulitis amenable to outpatient treatment. OBJECTIVES: The objective was to determine risk factors associated with adult patients presenting to the ED with cellulitis who fail initial antibiotic therapy as outpatients and require a change of antibiotics or admissio

Postpartum visit attendance after spontaneous and medically indicated preterm birth.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with preterm birth (PTB) are less likely to attend postpartum visits compared to those with term birth but are more likely to have conditions such as hypertensive disorders. PTB can be classified as spontaneous PTB (sPTB) (premature rupture of membranes or preterm labor) and medically indicated PTB (mPTB) (clinician-initiated due to maternal or fetal conditions). We compared postpartum visit attendance after sPTB and mPTB to term birth. We hypothesized that sPTB and mPTB would be associated with increased risk of not attending postpartum visits compared to term, but r

Rates of Hepatocellular Carcinoma After Start of Treatment for Chronic Hepatitis C Remain High with Direct Acting Antivirals: Analysis from a Swiss Liver Transplant Center.

BACKGROUND: Direct-acting antivirals (DAA) have revolutionized the therapy of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and have replaced previous PEG-interferon/ribavirin (PEG-IFN/RBV) treatment. Patients with CHC and advanced liver disease are at increased risk for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the effects of DAA-based CHC treatment on subsequent HCC incidence remain poorly understood. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective single-institution cohort study included 243 consecutive patients after PEG-IFN/RBV and 263 patients after DAA treatment. Multivariable cause-specific Cox proportional haza

Linguistic Markers of Pain Communication on X (Formerly Twitter) in US States With High and Low Opioid Mortality: Machine Learning and Semantic Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The opioid epidemic in the United States remains a major public health concern, with opioid-related deaths increasing more than 8-fold since 1999. Chronic pain, affecting 1 in 5 US adults, is a key contributor to opioid use and misuse. While previous research has explored clinical and behavioral predictors of opioid risk, less attention has been given to large-scale linguistic patterns in public discussions of pain. Social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) offer real-time, population-level insights into how individuals express pain, distress, and coping strategies. Under

Periodontitis Prediction Model Using Linked Electronic Health and Dental Records.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal disease (PD) is closely linked to systemic health, with established associations with chronic conditions (eg, diabetes, cardiovascular disease). However, most predictive models rely solely on dental data, limiting the consideration of systemic factors such as medical conditions. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to enhance PD risk prediction by using linked electronic dental records (EDRs) with electronic health records (EHRs) and machine learning (ML). METHODS: We used EDR data from 20,946 adult patients at Temple University School of Dentistry's (2022-2023) axiUm®, lin
