Is It Time to Begin a Public Campaign Concerning Frailty and Pre-frailty? A Review Article.

Frailty is a state that encompasses losses in physical, psychological or social domains. Therefore, frail people demonstrate a reduced potential to manage external stressors and to respond to life incidents. Consequently, such persons are prone to various adverse consequences such as falls, cognitive decline, infections, hospitalization, disability, institutionalization, and death. Pre-frailty is a condition predisposing and usually preceding the frailty state. Early detection of frailty (i.e., pre-frailty) may present an opportunity to introduce effective management to improve outcomes. Exerc

False Safety Behavior Elimination Therapy: A randomized study of a brief individual transdiagnostic treatment for anxiety disorders.

In response to the ever-growing number of CBT based therapy protocols, transdiagnostic approaches to anxiety treatment, based on models of anxiety emphasizing common elements across anxiety disorders, have been increasingly explored. The aim of the current study was to test the efficacy of an individually administered, brief (5-session) transdiagnostic treatment for anxiety disorders. The current treatment (called F-SET) focuses chiefly on the elimination of anxiety maintaining behaviors and cognitive strategies (so-called "safety" aids) among individuals suffering from a range of anxiety diso

Yoga for generalized anxiety disorder: design of a randomized controlled clinical trial.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common disorder associated with significant distress and interference. Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to be the most effective form of psychotherapy, few patients receive or have access to this intervention. Yoga therapy offers another promising, yet under-researched, intervention that is gaining increasing popularity in the general public, as an anxiety reduction intervention. The purpose of this innovative clinical trial protocol is to investigate the efficacy of a Kundalini Yoga intervention, relative to CBT and a control c

Differential associations between components of anxiety sensitivity and smoking-related characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety sensitivity (AS)-the tendency to fear anxiety-related experiences-is a risk factor for anxiety disorders and may contribute to smoking motivation and maintenance. Few studies have examined the relations between conceptually distinct components of AS and smoking behavior. The purpose of the current study was to examine the associations between AS components-physical concerns, mental concerns, and social concerns-and an array of smoking-related characteristics. METHODS: In a cross-sectional design, we administered the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) and self-report measure

Anger self-management in chronic traumatic brain injury: protocol for a psycho-educational treatment with a structurally equivalent control and an evaluation of treatment enactment.

Anger and irritability are important and persistent clinical problems following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Treatment options include medications, behavioral modification, and psychotherapies, but some are impractical and none have proven efficacy with this population. We describe a randomized multi-center clinical trial testing a novel, one-on-one, 8-session psychoeducational treatment program, Anger Self-Management Training (ASMT), designed specifically for people with TBI who have significant cognitive impairment. The trial is notable for its use of a structurally equivalent comparison tr

Computer-assisted delivery of cognitive-behavioral therapy: efficacy and durability of CBT4CBT among cocaine-dependent individuals maintained on methadone.

OBJECTIVE: A previous pilot trial evaluating computer-based training for cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT4CBT) in 77 heterogeneous substance users (alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and opioids) demonstrated preliminary support for its efficacy in the context of a community-based outpatient clinic. The authors conducted a more definitive trial in a larger, more homogeneous sample. METHOD: In this randomized clinical trial, 101 cocaine-dependent individuals maintained on methadone were randomly assigned to standard methadone maintenance or methadone maintenance with weekly access to CBT4CBT, with

Erythropoietin prevents cognitive impairment and oxidative parameters in Wistar rats subjected to pneumococcal meningitis.

Pneumococcal meningitis is characterized by a severe inflammatory reaction in the subarachnoid and ventricular space of the brain, disruption of the blood-brain barrier, hearing loss, and neurologic sequelae in as many as 27% of surviving patients. Several experimental studies have shown that erythropoietin (EPO) and its receptor are expressed in the central nervous system and have neuroprotective properties through the inhibition of apoptosis, as well as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, angiogenic, and neurotrophic effects. In the current study, we demonstrated the effect of erythropoietin (EP

Initial evaluation of the effects of competitive memory training (COMET) on depression in schizophrenia-spectrum patients with persistent auditory verbal hallucinations: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates whether depression can be ameliorated by weakening the associations between auditory verbal hallucinations and easily activated networks with negative self-evaluations, by strengthening the access to competing memories of positive self-esteem. Design.  A randomized controlled clinical trial comparing competitive memory training (COMET) with treatment as usual (TAU) in schizophrenia patients with persistent auditory hallucinations. METHODS: Patients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders were randomized into COMET (n = 39) versus TAU (n = 38). COMET consisted

Empirically supported psychological treatments for adult acute stress disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder: a review.

BACKGROUND: Acute stress disorder (ASD) predicts the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which in some sufferers can persist for years and lead to significant disability. We carried out a review of randomized controlled trials to give an update on which psychological treatments are empirically supported for these disorders, and used the criteria set out by Chambless and Hollon [1998: J Consult Clin Psychol 66:7-18] to draw conclusions about efficacy, first irrespective of trauma type and second with regard to particular populations. METHODS: The PsycINFO and PubMed databases

Neurophysiological alterations during strategy-based verbal learning in traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Verbal learning and strategic processing deficits are common sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI); however, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying such deficits remain poorly understood. METHODS: We performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 25 individuals with chronic TBI (>1 year after injury) and 20 matched healthy controls. Subjects were scanned while encoding word lists, with free recall and recognition assessed after each scanning run. To vary the strategic processing load, participants learned semantically unrelated words (Unrelated condition), sema

Mid- and long-term outcome of 166 premature infants weighing less than 1,000 g at birth, all small for gestational age.

This longitudinal study reported the mid- and long-term neurodevelopmental outcome of 166 premature infants born with an extremely low birth weight (<1,000 g), all small for gestational age (<10th percentile birth weight for gestational age). Nine girls were lost to follow-up before 3 years of age, and 6 children were excluded a posteriori because of specific conditions diagnosed in the 1st year of life (severe abnormalities in 5). Of the remaining 151 children, 2% had cerebral palsy, 15% had lesser motor disturbances (reduced to 2% after psychomotor training), 8% had early severe developmenta

An operant-based touchscreen morph discrimination task does not detect age-related mnemonic similarity deficits in rats.

The Mnemonic Similarity Task (MST) is sensitive to age-related cognitive decline in humans and has been adapted for rodents using 3D objects, where aged animals show deficits discriminating similar lures. To improve translational alignment and increase automation, we developed a touchscreen-based rat analog using a morphed Object-Cued Spatial Choice task with 2D image stimuli. Young and aged male and female Fischer 344 × Brown Norway rats were trained in Bussey-Saksida touchscreen chambers and tested with image pairs that varied parametrically in feature overlap. In a subset of animals, we als

Gravity-awareness: a deep learning and LLM framework for predicting human adaptation to altered gravitational environments.

Earth's gravity fundamentally shapes human behavior. The brain encodes this force as an internal model of gravity, enabling the prediction and interpretation of gravitational effects during perception and action. Understanding how this model adapts to altered gravity is critical for predicting human performance in spaceflight. We present a computational framework for modelling neurophysiological adaptation across diverse gravitational environments. The framework has two components trained on open-access data from altered-gravity studies, particularly parabolic flights. The first component (Cor

Implementing meaningful activity facilitators to prevent hospital-acquired complications in French geriatric short-stay wards: A qualitative analysis of the context and stakeholder representations.

BACKGROUND: Rising hospitalization rates among older inpatients and their complex needs challenge traditional acute care models. Hospital-acquired complications and deconditioning remain major risks, especially when organizational constraints limit meaningful interactions. This qualitative study explored the perceived care needs for older inpatients and acceptability of Meaningful Activity Facilitators (MAFs) to address these needs in acute geriatric wards in France. METHODS: Using a multiple data source approach, we conducted non-participatory field observations and semi-structured interview

Identification of plasma biomarkers in lipid metabolism for accurate prediction of Alzheimer's disease.

Metabolomics may reveal non-invasive biomarkers for early diagnosis in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and provide new insights into the disease mechanisms to develop effective treatments. Here, we comprehensively analyzed the blood plasma metabolomes from a Chinese cohort of 447 individuals, including 188 AD, 181 MCI (mild cognitive impairment), and 78 NC (normal control). Differential analysis identified altered metabolites, followed by forward feature selection to prioritize a panel of key metabolites, and construction of a diagnostic model using logistic regression. Key metabolite-enriched pathwa

Hybrid groupers-moray orangutan optimization algorithm-based dense-resolution network for autism spectrum disorder detection using multimodal data.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder involving cognitive and social impairments. Precise diagnosis is vital for effective intervention. However, conventional diagnostic techniques exhibited poor generalization, and high error rates while dealing with subtle patterns in neuroimaging or behavioral datasets. To resolve these concerns, this research introduces the Groupers and Moray Orangutan Optimization Algorithm based Dense-Resolution Network (GMOA-DRNet). The multimodal inputs consist of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) brain images and autism-related phenotypic data
