An integrated green control strategy for plant viral co-infections: from multivalent vaccine construction to synergistically modified nanodelivery systems.

Plant viral co-infections pose a significant threat to global agricultural productivity. In this study, a novel multivalent attenuated vaccine (CMV-R2TP) was developed using the cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) as a backbone, together with a ROS-responsive vaccine nanodelivery system (pCMV-R2TP@PTP-TAT), offering a comprehensive and environmentally friendly strategy for managing plant viruses. Through the modification of the CMV 2b protein, a stable base vector (pR2-2bIII) capable of accommodating up to 400 bp foreign fragments was constructed. The resulting CMV-R2TP vaccine demonstrated protective

A case report of rhino-orbital-cerebral invasive infection caused by co-infection with Pleurostoma ootheca and Mucorales.

Pleurostoma species are rare opportunistic fungal pathogens that primarily infects immunocompromised hosts, causing phaeohyphomycosis, manifesting as localised superficial or deep infections, pulmonary infections, central nervous system infections, or disseminated diseases. Fungi of the order Mucorales are known to cause rapidly progressive infections in the lungs, rhino-orbital-cerebral regions, and skin, with high mortality rates. We report the first case of rhino-orbital co-infection by these pathogens in a diabetic patient, resulting in irreversible vision loss. The patient presented with

Host response profiling reveals heterogenous immune responses in hospitalised adults with respiratory viral detection.

BACKGROUND: Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is the commonest reason for antibiotic use. Distinguishing bacterial from viral ARI is challenging, leading to antibiotic overuse and antimicrobial resistance. Respiratory viruses detected by PCR in patients with ARI may be causally related, but asymptomatic detection and bacterial co-infection can also occur. Host response profiling may therefore provide insights into the clinical significance of viral detection. METHODS: PAXgene RNA blood samples from patients hospitalised with ARI were tested using the TriVerity test (Inflammatix, Sunnyvale, CA

Pathogenesis of MRSA-influenza co-infection: implications for ECMO therapeutic strategies - a mini-review.

Influenza virus (Influenzavirus A) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) co-infection is a critical clinical challenge, often leading to severe complications such as necrotizing pneumonia. This review elucidates the mechanisms by which influenza virus facilitates S. aureus infections through epithelial damage and immune modulation, thereby exacerbating pulmonary injury. Specifically, influenza virus infection damages respiratory epithelial cells and disrupts the integrity of the lung barrier. This process facilitates the invasion of S. aureus, which produces various virulence factors, includin

Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens co-infection in a microfilaremic dog from Negotin, Eastern Serbia: Unusual localization of adult Dirofilaia repens in an abdominal hernia sac.

Cardiopulmonary and subcutaneous dirofilariosis, caused by the nematodes Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens, are vector-borne diseases of growing concern in both veterinary and human medicine. While typically found in predilection sites, atypical localizations have been documented for both species. The first case of adult D. repens found in a dog's abdominal hernia sac in Eastern Serbia is reported in this study. A 7-year-old dog was brought to a veterinary clinic in Negotin, Serbia with lateral abdominal swelling. During hernia repair surgery, three filiform nematodes were discovered

Concurrent cryptococcal and dengue meningoencephalitis as initial presentation of human immunodeficiency virus infection in a patient from arbovirus-endemic northeastern Brazil: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Co-infections involving dengue virus (DENV) and opportunistic fungal pathogens are rarely reported alongside human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). To our knowledge, no prior cases of DENV and Cryptococcus neoformans coinfection have been documented. This case highlights a novel presentation of concurrent DENV and cryptococcal meningoencephalitis in an immunocompromised host, reinforcing the importance of considering multiple etiologies in patients from tropical regions presenting with neurological symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old Braz…

HIV impairs and exploits pulmonary Th17 and Th22 cell-mediated immune responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) kills an estimated 1.25 million people annually and is the leading cause of death in people with HIV (PWH) (1). The CD4+ T helper (Th) populations play significant roles in protective immunity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and are essential hosts for HIV pathogenesis. Emerging evidence in blood and gastrointestinal mucosa of PWH suggests that, among Th cells, Th17 and Th22 may be preferentially depleted during HIV infection. Targeting of Th17 and Th22 cells by HIV could pose important and poorly understood risks for Mtb containment in those with co-infection. Mtb-driven

Immunopathogenesis of TB-HIV Co-Infection: Mechanisms of Dual Immune Suppression and Viral-Bacterial Synergy.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) co-infection represents one of the most devastating syndemics in global health, accounting for substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide. The interaction between these two pathogens is not merely additive but highly synergistic, driven by profound immune dysregulation. HIV-mediated depletion of CD4+ T cells facilitates tuberculosis (TB) progression, whereas TB-induced immune activation enhances HIV replication and accelerates disease progression. HIV preferentially infects CD4+ T cells and impairs the funct

Modelling child anaemia and co-existing infections using log-linear models.

BACKGROUND: Uganda grapples with a considerable anaemia-malaria-fever burden, reporting approximate prevalence rates as high as 33%, 34%, and 37% in specific regions. In recent years, attempts have been made by the Ministry of Health to address the combined burden of the characterized conditions of these illnesses. However, the relationship between malaria, fever, and anaemia has not been well characterized among young children living in many communities. By employing log-linear models, this study aims to examine patterns and associations between malaria, fever, and child anaemia in Uganda whi

Peritoneal dialysis-associated polymicrobial peritonitis with slow onset after root canal treatment: the first case and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis is linked to an increased risk of mortality and catheter removal, with a higher incidence of these risks observed in polymicrobial peritonitis compared with single-organism infection. In PD patients, invasive procedures can cause peritonitis, typically within 7 days, through transient bacteremia. Although dental procedures are widely recognized as a cause of transient bacteremia, only a limited number of cases involving PD-associated peritonitis after dental procedures, and no cases of polymicrobial peritonitis, have been reported. Human metapneumovirus: an underdiagnosed public health threat.

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV), a negative-sense RNA virus in the Pneumoviridae family, has emerged as a major yet under-recognized cause of acute respiratory infections worldwide. Since its identification in 2001, hMPV has shown steady genetic evolution into genotypes A and B, with newer sublineages such as A2.2.1, A2.2.2, and B2 currently detected across continents. A recent global rise in hMPV detections, detailed in reports from China, Europe, and the USA, likely reflects both expanded testing and the re-establishment of seasonal circulation following the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-infections wit

Complexity of Diarrhea-Associated Viruses in Stunted Pigs Identified by Viral Metagenomics.

Viral diarrhea poses a severe threat to the health and growth of piglets, especially when caused by co-infection with multiple diarrhea-associated viruses. In this study anal swabs were collected from pigs older than 3 months from a farm in Gansu province, China, and subjected to viral metagenomic analysis. They had been suffering from diarrhea and their growth was significantly retarded. A total of 18 viruses were identified by high-throughput sequencing (HTS) in pooled samples from 22 stunted pigs and (separately) three healthy pigs. They included 15 diarrhea-associated RNA viruses with five

Impact of HIV on HPV-related cancers in men who have sex with men: a review.

Co-infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) significantly increases the incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and HPV-related cancers among men who have sex with men (MSM). Conversely, HPV infection can also influence HIV acquisition rates. HIV-induced immune suppression may affect chromosomal stability, gene expression, protein function and other molecular components in MSM with HPV-related cancers. Additionally, HIV infection also alters cellular mechanisms by compromising immune responses and epithelial integrity. In this review, we reviewed the influence of HIV on spec

Virulence and pathogenicity of secondary fungal infections.

Fungal infections pose a significant global health threat, particularly among immunocompromised individuals facing life-threatening complications. The severity of secondary fungal infections is driven by the expression of virulence factors in immunocompromised individuals. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the susceptibility of immunocompromised patients to secondary fungal infections, prompting a closer examination of the underlying mechanisms. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the virulence mechanisms of major fungal pathogens (Aspergillus, Candida, and Mucorales) in COVID

Parasite responses to resource provisioning can be altered by within-host co-infection interactions.

Anthropogenic changes to the environment significantly impact wildlife infectious diseases by modifying food resources and impacting host-parasite interactions through changes in host demography, behaviour and immune defences. Supplemental resource provisioning has been found to both enhance and mitigate parasite transmission; however, the role of co-infecting parasites in mediating these effects remains understudied. We developed a mathematical model to explore these dynamics, motivated by the empirical system of wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) infected with the nematode Heligmosomoides polyg
