Anesthetics and Cell-Cell Communication: Potential Ca2+-Calmodulin Role in Gap Junction Channel Gating by Heptanol, Halothane and Isoflurane.

Cell-cell communication via gap junction channels is known to be inhibited by the anesthetics heptanol, halothane and isoflurane; however, despite numerous studies, the mechanism of gap junction channel gating by anesthetics is still poorly understood. In the early nineties, we reported that gating by anesthetics is strongly potentiated by caffeine and theophylline and inhibited by 4-Aminopyridine. Neither Ca2+ channel blockers nor 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX), forskolin, CPT-cAMP, 8Br-cGMP, adenosine, phorbol ester or H7 had significant effects on gating by anesthetics. In our publicati…

BRCAShare-Assessment of an animated digital message for intrafamilial communication of pathogenic variant positive test results: A feasibility study.

While genetic testing for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC) is well-established in the field of medicine, family members' uptake of cascade genetic testing for known familial pathogenic variants remains low. Probands often become responsible for initiating familial communication about their testing results, and barriers to communication may include difficulty in conveying information to relatives and a lack of communication resources for probands' use. In this study, we tested a two-minute animated digital message (ADM) intervention guided by the Health Belief Model (HBM) in…

Speech, language and communication needs and mental health: the experiences of speech and language therapists and mental health professionals.

BACKGROUND: While the relationship between speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and mental health difficulties has been recognized, speech and language therapists (SLTs), and mental health professionals face challenges in assessing and treating children with these co-occurring needs. There exists a gap in the evidence base for best practice for professionals working with children and young people (CYP) who experience difficulties in both areas. AIMS: To explore the views of SLTs and mental health clinicians about their experiences of working with CYP exhibiting co-occurring SLCN an…

An Automatic Incident Detection Method for a Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Communication Environment: Case Study of Interstate 64 in Missouri.

Transportation agencies continuously and consistently work to improve the processes and systems for mitigating the impacts of roadway incidents. Such efforts include utilizing emerging technologies to reduce the detection and response time to roadway incidents. Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication is an emerging transportation technology that enables communication between a vehicle and the infrastructure. This paper proposes an algorithm that utilizes V2I probe data to automatically detect roadway incidents. A simulation testbed was developed for a segment of Interstate 64 in St. Loui…

RvD1 disrupts nociceptor neuron and macrophage activation and neuroimmune communication, reducing pain and inflammation in gouty arthritis in mice.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Gouty arthritis is characterized by an intense inflammatory response to monosodium urate crystals (MSU), which induc … the activation of peptidergic neurons and macrophages as well as silenced nociceptor to macrophage communication and macrophage function. CGRP stimulated MSU phagocytosis and IL-1β production by macrophages. RvD1 downmodulated this phenomenon directly by acting on macrophages, and indirectly by inhibiting CGRP release and CGRP-dependent activation of macrophag …

'That's what makes me better': Investigating children and adolescents' experiences of pain communication with healthcare professionals in paediatric rheumatology.

BACKGROUND: Pain communication should be an integral part of clinical consultations, particularly in paediatric rheumatology where children and adolescents frequently present with chronic musculoskeletal pain. To date, literature exploring the nature of and extent to which pain communication occurs has focused on healthcare professionals as respondents, yielding inconsistent and incomplete findings. The aim of this study was to explore children and adolescents' experiences of pain communication in the context of paediatric rheumatology consultations. METHODS: Data were collected using semi-st…

Short communication: Virological and B cell profiles of chikungunya and Dengue virus co-infections in Delhi during 2017-2019.

With explosive epidemics of chikungunya in India since 2004, chikungunya virus (CHIKV) now co-circulates in geographical areas where Dengue virus (DENV) is already endemic and thus provides opportunity for the same mosquito to be infected with both viruses. Although there are excellent studies that have addressed the clinical of mono and co-infection, we have little to no knowledge on the current viral sequences that pre-dominate co-infections, and the B cell response elicited. In this study, we analyzed febrile patients that were confirmed to have DENV-CHIKV co-infections and asked the follow

Barriers to family history knowledge and family communication among LGBTQ+ individuals in the context of hereditary cancer risk assessment.

Openness about identity as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual orientations and gender identities (LGBTQ+) may cause strain on relationships between family members, which could lead to limited knowledge of cancer family history and reduced communication with family members. As a result, members of the LGBTQ+ community may have more difficulty accessing genetic counseling services for inherited cancer risk. We applied a mixed-methods approach to explore potential barriers to knowledge of cancer family history and family communication among participants of the Cancer Hea…
