We quantified rheumatoid factor cross-reactive idiotype (RF-CRI) in whole serum from RF+ rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, using an inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay which is not affected by the presence of IgG. B-lymphocytes obtained from patients with either rheumatic fever or rheumatic heart disease and from normal subjects were reacted with serum obtained from rabbits immunized with streptococcal cell wall antigen. The presence of cytotoxicity was sought using an inverted phase microscope after differential uptake of eosin dye. The serum was found to be significantly more cytotoxic to HLA-DR4 containing cells of both patients and normals compared with DR4 negative cells (P less than 0.0001).

Human sera were collected from twenty patients of parasitologically proven cutaneous leishmaniasis, 35 cases of schistosomiasis mansoni and ten normal control sera. The antileishmanial antibodies were detected by the dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (dot ELISA). The results showed that the dot ELISA had high sensitivity. However, there was a marked deal of cross reactivity with the antisera of schistosomiasis mansoni infected patients, particularly those with splenomegaly and ascites.

Western immunoblotting was used to investigate the binding of two monoclonal antibodies raised against unfractionated wheat gliadin to different cereal protein fractions separated by SDS-PAGE. For an 8 year period 45 patients with Bechterew's disease were found who had no antigen HLA-B27. 35 of the patients were tested for HLA--A, -B or -C. In 12 patients antigens of the cross-reacting group B27 (B7, Bw22 and B40) were found. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunofluorescence assay (IFA) were performed in 25 and 32 cases of morphea, respectively. The more sensitive and specific ELISA was positive in only 1 of 25 cases and the mean value was lower in cases of morphea than in controls. IFA showed minimally reactive titers in 6 (19%) of 32 cases. There were an additional six cases with borderline titers. These data indicate that there is no specific association between Borrelia burgdorferi infection and morphea but that patients with morphea tend to have circulating antibodies that are cross-reactive.
