OBJECTIVE: This study had for aim to evaluate practices and knowledge of infectious hazards, to determine the prevalence of viral infections related to occupational blood exposure among health care workers, and to propose a preventive policy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Epidural steroid injections are commonly used to palliate the symptoms of spinal stenosis. Deep tissue infection is a known potential complication of these injections. There have been no previous published cases of osteomyelitis without epidural abscess after such injections. We present a case in an elderly patient who presented only with persistent axial low back pain following a lumbar epidural steroid injection (LESI). We emphasize early patient evaluation, consideration of infectious predisposing factors, sterile technique, and skin disinfectant.

BACKGROUND: One-stage full-mouth disinfection (FMD), in which full-mouth scaling and root planing (SRP) is performed with adjunctive use of chlorhexidine, was introduced in 1995. There have been several reports on the effectiveness of this treatment protocol. However, FMD was reported to induce pyrexia frequently. We examined the effects of full-mouth SRP in conjunction with azithromycin administered orally before SRP to control the number of bacteria. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of full-mouth SRP using azithromycin with conventional SRP.

Carefully controlled bench-scale and on-site experiments demonstrated that cyanide can form in the treated drinking water sample container during preservation and storage. In the bench-scale experiment, treated tap water samples were collected on 20 days over six months. OBJECTIVE: To identify characteristics, including current high-risk drug and sex behaviors, associated with self-reported HIV infection among injection drug users (IDUs) in Ukraine.
DESIGN: Targeted sampling of IDUs from Kiev, Odessa, and Makeevka/Donetsk, Ukraine.
METHODS: From June through August 2002, 100 IDUs from each site were recruited through street outreach, including 212 who had previously been tested for HIV and knew their serostatus. Subjects were administered a standardized computer-assisted interview assessing HIV-related drug and sex risk behaviors and history of HIV testing.

The chlorinated salts of cyanuric acid have found an important role in recreational swimming pool waters across the United States.
