Most spinal cord injuries (SCI) spare descending and sublesional circuits that can be targeted through motor cortex and spinal cord stimulation to mitigate locomotor deficits. However, the potential synergy between cortical and spinal stimulation remains unknown. Here, we first investigated the phase-locked electrical stimulation of the motor cortex and lumbar spinal cord at 40 Hz in a rat model of unilateral SCI. Combining cortical and lumbar stimulation around the anticipated lift synergistically enhanced leg movements. When integrated into rehabilitation training, cortical stimulation prove

BACKGROUND: While deep brain stimulation has been successful in treating movement disorders, such as in Parkinson's disease, its potential application in alleviating memory disorders is inconclusive.
OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: We investigated the role of the location of the stimulating electrode on memory improvement and hypothesized that entorhinal white versus gray matter stimulation would have differential effects on memory.
METHODS: Intracranial electrical stimulation was applied to the entorhinal area of twenty-two participants with already implanted electrodes as they completed visual memor

Modulation of neural activity through electrical stimulation of tissue is an effective therapy for neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. Researchers are exploring improving therapy through adjustment of stimulation parameters based upon sensed data. This requires classifiers to extract features and estimate patient state. It also requires algorithms to appropriately map the state estimation to stimulation parameters. The latter, known as the control policy algorithm, is the focus of this work. Because the optimal control policy algorithms for the nervous syste

The gastric acid secreted per unit of serum gastrin concentration or per unit of gastrin delivered to the gastric mucosa was significantly greater during electrical vagal stimulation than during stimulation by meat extract in the pyloric antrum. There was no significant difference in the concentrations of big, big gastrin or Components I and II in gastric venous serum during the two forms of stimulation. There were significantly greater concentrations of Components II and IV in gastric venous serum during meat extract stimulation than during vagal stimulation. The gastrin in gastric venous ser

Objective.Machine learning (ML) models are increasingly used to generate electrical stimulation patterns in neuroprosthetic devices such as visual prostheses. While these models promise precise and personalized control, they also introduce new safety risks when model outputs are delivered directly to neural tissue. We propose a systematic, quantitative approach to detect and characterize unsafe stimulation patterns in ML-driven neurostimulation systems.Approach.We adapt an automated software testing technique known as coverage-guided fuzzing to the domain of neural stimulation. Here, fuzzing p

Simultaneous electromyography (EMG) sensing and closed-loop electrical stimulation (ES) could enable interactive muscle training, motor rehabilitation, and kinesthetic feedback. However, current systems often suffer from nonconformal device/skin interfaces, poor wearability, and anatomical variability among users, limiting signal fidelity and stimulation precision. Here, we present a fully wireless, skin-integrated electronic tattoo platform that records high-quality EMG and delivers closed-loop ES through custom drawn-on-skin, conformal electrodes with strong adhesion and high spatial accurac

The hair growth is a highly controlled biological process, governed by the cycles of the hairs in anagen (growth), catagen (regression) and telogen (rest period). Breaks in it could lead to hair thinning and loss, that is why a response there's certainly a need for effective treatment. Current methods such as topical minoxidil, oral finasteride and modern techniques including platelet-rich plasma therapy or hair transplantation work by improving the functioning of hair follicles to prolong their growth phase. In this instance, the aim of this article is to mainly review about emerging mechanob

Gastroparesis is a disease in which gastric emptying is significantly decreased in the absence of a mechanical obstruction of the gastric outlet. In addition to conservative or pharmacological treatment options, gastric electrical stimulation (GES) is a possible alternative therapy for refractory courses of the disease. However, the available data from randomised controlled trials on efficacy do not permit an unqualified recommendation. The aim of this review is to introduce the clinical picture of gastroparesis, including the underlying pathophysiology, and to classify the therapeutic role of

Managing chronic fracture pain presents a therapeutic challenge due to the development of resistance to conventional analgesics. We report the successful use of peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) via an infraclavicular brachial plexus approach to treat refractory chronic pain after a humeral neck fracture in a 75-year-old woman. The patient achieved complete pain resolution, discontinued all adjuvant analgesics, and experienced no procedure-related complications. This case supports the emerging role of PNS as an effective opioid-sparing intervention for chronic upper extremity pain. .

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a chronic disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of upper airway collapse during sleep, which can lead to serious health issues like cardiovascular disease and neurocognitive impairments. While positive airway pressure serves as the standard treatment, intolerance in some individuals necessitates exploration of alternative therapies. Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) promises to mitigate OSA morbidity by stimulating the tongue muscles to maintain airway patency. However, its effectiveness varies, prompting research for optimization. This review summari

Free, ionic zinc (Zn2+) modulates neurotransmitter dynamics in the brain. However, the sub-s effects of transient concentration changes of Zn2+ on neurotransmitter release and uptake are not well understood. To address this lack of knowledge, we have combined the photolysis of the novel caged Zn2+ compound [Zn(DPAdeCageOMe)]+ with fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) at carbon fiber microelectrodes in live, whole brain preparations from zebrafish (Danio rerio). After treating the brain with [Zn(DPAdeCageOMe)]+, Zn2+ was released by application of light that was gated through a computer-controll
