Premalignant oral lesions are among the most important risk factors for the development of oral squamocellular carcinoma. Recent population studies indicate a significant rise in the prevalence of leukoplakia, erythroplakia/erythroleukoplakia, actinic cheilitis, submucous fibrosis and erosive lichen planus. Since standard histopathological examination has numerous limitations regarding the accurate appreciation of potential malignant transformation, the present study aims to aid these evaluations using the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique, which emphasizes ultrastructural chang

The authors describe a case of a 61-year-old female patient, which presented on multidetector computed tomographic (MDCT) angiography a gastrosplenic trunk (GST) and common hepatic artery (CHA) arose independently from abdominal aorta (AA). The GST arose from the anterior wall of the AA, at the level of upper edge of the L1 vertebral body. The left gastric artery (LGA) arose from the superior wall of the GST. The splenic artery (SA) continuous the path of GST. The CHA arose from the anterior wall of the AA, at the level of upper one third of the L1 vertebral body, at 15.3 mm above the origin o

The acute abdomen with its many clinical aspects is not a condition that eludes pregnancy; acute appendicitis being the most frequently incriminated, but when it comes to its complication - peritonitis and the pregnant is a teenager, the cases cited in the literature are quite rare. We present the case of a 15-year-old teenager pregnant within 24 weeks admitted from the emergency department with the diagnosis of acute abdomen and operated for generalized peritonitis due to a perforated appendicitis. The microscopic analysis of the specimen indicated the presence of ulceration and extensive and

The acute limb ischemia (ALI) in neonates is a rare phenomenon, but with serious consequences if undiagnosed or untreated. The purpose of this review is to briefly present the etiology of ALI and morphological findings in correlation with specific causes. Etiology can be classified into two main groups: prenatal (in utero compression, thrombosis and embolism) and postnatal (iatrogenic, thromboembolism and vascular malformations). The most common cause of ALI is catheter-related thrombosis (almost 90% of thrombosis cases are associated with catheter use), but other rare causes like vascular mal

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex chronic neurodegenerative disease that involves an abnormal autoimmune response directed against the brain, nerves and spinal cord; it is considered the most frequent cause of neurological disability, because MS-associated inflammatory lesions can affect a wide range of systems to a varying degree and may cause a plethora of neurological comorbidities and symptoms. The symptoms are quite variable from patient to patient and depend on the spatial distribution of the central nervous system (CNS) lesions, but usually involve sensory disturbances, cognitive def

Empty sella means the absence of the pituitary gland on cranial computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Empty sella syndrome is the pathological variant of the imaging-described empty sella. We present the case of a male Caucasian child, aged four years and two months, for short stature and diagnosed by imaging procedures as empty sella. The cause of short stature was isolated growth hormone (GH) deficiency. Associated he presented left hand postaxial polydactyly. In connection with this particular case, we propose a review of current knowledge in empty sella syndrome. The particula

Intrapancreatic accessory spleen (IPAS) is a congenital anomaly usually misdiagnosed as a pancreatic neoplasm. For five years and four months, we collected seven IPASs located in the tail of the pancreas in four patients diagnosed by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA). All cases had associated cell block preparations. Each patient underwent endoscopic ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. The patients ranged in age from 57 to 73 years (mean age 65.7 years old). All lesions were well-defined, 1-1.9 cm in size (mean 1.5 cm)

Congenital hydronephrosis caused by ureteral anomalies, like ureteral duplicity, megaureter, ureteral ectopy and ureterocele, must be differentiated from ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UJO) hydronephrosis and from the hydronephrosis caused by vesicoureteral reflux. These represent a differentiated branch of congenital abnormalities in children even if not so common, but this fact should not be disconsidered. Over a five years period, from 111 operated children in our Clinic, we performed 13 interventions for congenital hydronephrosis, 11 (84.61%) being caused by ureteral abnormalities. He

Scimitar syndrome is a form of a partially or totally right pulmonary venous return to the inferior vena cava, which may associate variably right lung hypoplasia, right pulmonary artery hypoplasia, pulmonary sequestration together with the presence of aortopulmonary collaterals from the descending aorta towards the right lung. In many cases, there are also other cardiac anomalies associated. We present a unique association of a partially anomalous pulmonary venous return to the inferior vena cava with other vascular and thoracic anomalies: inferior sinus venosus and secundum atrial septal defe

We present the imagistic and pathological assessment of a unique case of complete pentalogy of Cantrell associated with craniorachischisis, pulmonary extrophy and right-sided aortic arch with aberrant brachiocephalic artery. For this particular case, the complete and correct diagnosis required a post-mortem imagistic high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 7 T and detailed stereomicroscopic autopsy. Also, we discussed the pathogenesis and possible etiology of pentalogy of Cantrell and the associated malformations of the case presented.

The severe form of retroplacental hematoma is a serious accident in the second stage of pregnancy and at birth with frightening for the mother and fetus that often lead to death. The pathological mechanism presumes conditions for a "special ground" capital for the "efficiency" of the acute intradecidual vascular accident with the rupture of the uterus-placental arterioles. The complete clinical picture of this severe form of retroplacental hematoma - the placental abruption, observed and mentioned by the classics (vascular drama of Couvelaire) consists of five syndromes, 18 signs and symptoms,

The Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWS) is a complex congenital malformation, originally described as a triad of symptoms: didelphys uterus, low genital obstruction and unilateral renal anomaly. The term OHVIRA is an acronym (obstructed hemivagina/hemicervix with ipsilateral renal anomaly) and refers to the same syndrome. It gained acceptance in recent years, due to reports of cases having a non-didelphys uterus (normal, septated or having other abnormalities). In the following, we report two cases with good pregnancy outcome and we provide a short discussion on published literature. We h

Clear cell carcinoma (CCC) of the female genital tract usually arises in the ovary, endometrium, cervix and vagina. A rare site for CCC is the vulva, and moreover even rarer are the cases involving the Bartholin gland. A 54-year-old female was admitted for a 1.5×2 cm tumor at the level of the right Bartholin gland. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam revealed enlarged inguinal, pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes but no other primary tumor. Microscopic examination revealed CCC. The tumor was positive for cytokeratin 7 (CK7), paired-box 8 (Pax8), napsin A and vimentin, negative for estroge

Most percutaneous vertebroplasty procedures are being performed in order to relieve pain in patients with severe osteoporosis and associated stable fractures of one or more vertebral bodies. In addition, vertebroplasty is also recommended for patients suffering from post-traumatic symptoms associated with vertebral fractures, patients with large angiomas positioned inside the vertebral body, with an increased risk for collapse fracture and also patients presenting with pain associated with vertebral body metastatic disease. On another aspect, it is possible that in isolated cases, an orthopedi

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a large-vessel vasculitis with rarely described respiratory initial manifestations. We report such a case presenting with hoarseness, stridor, cough and dyspnea, in which a tracheomegaly with tracheomalacia was found. No signs of relapsing polychondritis were present. The respiratory symptoms rapidly improved after glucocorticoids and Azathioprine. Tracheomegaly or Mounier-Kuhn syndrome is characterized by marked dilatation of trachea and central bronchi. The differential diagnosis and the possible relationship between tracheomegaly and GCA involving metalloprotei

Patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) often develop one or more extraintestinal manifestations (EIM). We performed a prospective study that included 517 patients with IBD (Crohn's disease - CD, ulcerative colitis - UC or undifferentiated colitis - CN) diagnosed between 1975 and 2016 in the Northeastern region of Romania. The patients were extracted from the national database (IBD Prospect). UC cases predominated compared to CD cases (n=368 vs. n=135). Only 10 patients were diagnosed with CN. In the study group, 51 cases with IBD and EIM were identified, having a prevalence o
