In Italy since 15 years huge investments in term of human, material and economical resources have been allocated to prevention. However epidemiological data show unsatisfactory results. It's necessary and urgent to modify the general learning of prevention in order to increase all the actors involved in social and productive system. The aim of our project is to improve competencies and knowledge concerning hygiene in the workplace and prevention of nursing personnel, using cooperative-learning model, concerning the ways of transmission of infectious diseases, so that they will be able to devel

Visceral leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease highly influenced by eco-epidemiological factors. Geographical information systems (GIS) have proved to be a suitable approach for the analysis of environmental components that affect the spatial distribution of diseases. Exploiting this methodology, a model was developed for the mapping of the distribution and incidence of canine leishmaniasis in an endemic area of Brazil. Local variations were observed with respect to infection incidence and distribution of serological titers, i.e. high titers were noted close to areas with preserved vegetatio

This study explored the association between readiness to enter treatment and performance on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), a measure of problem solving ability and executive functioning. Data for this analysis was collected on 258 current regular users of heroin and/or cocaine as part of an epidemiologic study on executive function and drug use. A structural equation model was used to test the hypotheses that poorer performance on the WCST would predict lower scores on two latent constructs measuring motivation to change drug use. Specifically, poorer performance on the WCST was assoc

Statins are well-tolerated, mainstay drugs in cardiovascular risk management. In addition to their cholesterol-lowering properties, statins also have anti-inflammatory, vasculoprotective, and antioxidant effects. They have also been associated in some epidemiologic studies with reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and a link between cholesterol and late-onset AD has been documented. Experimental studies in cell culture systems and animal models show that statins have neuroprotective effects that may ameliorate the damage inflicted by stroke and AD. Human studies have garnered compelling e

Four criteria must be satisfied to conclude that a given microorganism causes Guillain-Barré (GBS) or Fisher (FS) syndrome associated with anti-ganglioside antibodies: (1) an epidemiological association between the infecting microbe and GBS or FS; (2) isolation in the acute progressive phase of illness of that microorganism from GBS or FS patients with associated anti-ganglioside IgG antibodies; (3) identification of a microbial ganglioside mimic; and (4) a GBS or FS with associated anti-ganglioside antibodies model produced by sensitization with the microbe itself or its component, as well as

Panic disorder is a major cause of medical attention with substantial social and health service cost. Based on pharmacological studies, research on its etiopathogenesis has been focused on the possible dysfunction of specific neurotransmitter systems. However, recent work has related the genes involved in development, synaptic plasticity and synaptic remodeling to anxiety disorders. This implies that learning processes and changes in perception, interpretation and behavioral responses to environmental stimuli are essential for development of complex anxiety responses secondary to the building

BACKGROUND: A picornavirus (Ljunganvirus [LV]) has recently been associated with disease during pregnancy in its natural rodent reservoir and in humans. A study of laboratory mice infected under controlled conditions was therefore undertaken.
METHODS: CD-1 female mice were infected gestational day two and subjected to varying regimes of stress.
RESULTS: LV infection in combination with stress resulted in uterine resorptions, malformations, and neonatal death. A short delay in time to first pregnancy and births was observed in pairs infected in utero.
CONCLUSIONS: LV is found in different sp

Population genetics and comparative genomics analyses of the pathogenic Yersinia species have indicated that arthropodborne transmission is an evolutionarily recent adaptation in Yersinia pestis, the agent of plague. We show that the infectivity of Y. pestis to its most proficient vector, the rat flea Xenopsylla cheopis, and subsequent transmission efficiency are both low. The poor vector competence of fleas likely imposed selective pressure that favored the emergence and continued maintenance of a hypervirulent Y. pestis clone. In particular, the rapidly fatal gram-negative sepsis that typifi

Reye's syndrome was a rare disease which appeared suddenly in the early 1950s and disappeared just as suddenly in the late 1980s. An association between Reye's syndrome and the ingestion of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) was claimed, although no proof of causation was ever established. The presence of salicylates in the blood or urine of Reye's syndrome patients has not been demonstrated, and no animal model of Reye's syndrome has been developed where aspirin causes the disease. It is clear from epidemiological data that the incidence of Reye's syndrome was decreasing well before warning label

Epidemiological studies have suggested an association between antacid therapy and development of listeriosis in humans. In this study we used a neutropenic mouse model to demonstrate that oral administration of sodium bicarbonate shortly before intragastric (i.g.) inoculation with Listeria monocytogenes EGD (serotype 1/2a) significantly increased the severity of the resulting systemic infection. An explanation for this observation is provided by evidence that L. monocytogenes EGD is rapidly inactivated in synthetic gastric fluid at pH below 5. A second strain of L. monocytogenes (CM [serotype

Restless legs syndrome (RLS), although long ignored and still much underdiagnosed, disrupts the life and sleep considerably of those who have it. Recent clinical and basic research provides for better definition and pathophysiologic understanding of the disorder. The body of knowledge about this disorder has been expanding rapidly during the past decade and it has altered our concepts of this disorder. This review of RLS covers history, diagnosis, morbidity of sleep disturbance, relation to periodic limb movements in both sleep and waking, secondary causes, severity assessment methods, phenoty

Accuracy assessment of diagnostic tests may be seriously biased if an imperfect reference test is used such as parasitology in the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis. We compared classical validity analysis of serological tests for Leishmania infantum with Latent Class Analysis (LCA), to assess whether it circumvented the gold standard problem. Clinical status, three serological tests (IFAT, ELISA and DAT) and parasitological data were recorded for 151 dogs captured in an endemic area. Sensitivity and specificity estimates from the 2x2 contingency tables were broadly corroborated by LCA, but

The purpose of this pilot study was to determine differences in family health across six dimensions of functioning between families with a very low birth weight infant (VLBW) and families with a full-term infant. An epidemiologic model and Barnhill's (1979) system theory of healthy family dynamics provided the organizing framework for the study. Sixteen families with a VLBW infant and 25 families with a full-term infant were assessed for differences in family health across Barnhill's six dimensions. Independent t-tests showed no significant differences on the five dimensions of infant behavior

The development of effective quantitative microbial risk-assessment models for foodborne pathogens depends on the availability of data on the consumers' exposure to a biological agent and the dose-response relationship that relates levels of the biological agent ingested with frequency of infection or disease. Information on the latter has historically been acquired from human volunteer feeding studies. However, such studies are not feasible for pathogens that either have a significant risk of being life threatening or for which morbidity is primarily associated with high-risk populations (i.e

Air pollution has become a major public and political concern since the beginning of industrialization, particularly motor exhaust over the past three decades. Epidemiological studies, together with clinical trials and experiments in exposition chambers (including biochemical model reactions), have contributed to our knowledge of potential dangers and increased our understanding of the corresponding mechanisms and dose-response effects. Comparison of the threatening reports that appear almost daily in the press with the digest of over 800 scientific publications allows the statement that the i

We present an hypothesis integrating epidemiological, clinical case, and basic biomedical research to explain why only relatively few women who drink alcohol during pregnancy give birth to children with alcohol-related birth defects (ARBDs), in particular, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). We argue that specific sociobehavioral risk factors, e.g., low socioeconomic status, are permissive for FAS in that they provide the context for increased vulnerability. We illustrate how these permissive factors are related to biological factors, e.g., decreased antioxidant status, which in conjunction with alc

Self report measures of smoking may contain substantial measurement error. If these errors are nonrandom, then they may be correlated with substantive variables in epidemiologic or intervention studies, thus confounding and biasing estimates of structural relations. In efforts to circumvent such bias, investigators have supplemented questionnaires with biological indicators of exposure to tobacco smoke. However, errors in biological indicators may also include systematic errors that produce biased estimates. The current study was designed to estimate the variance of systematic and random error

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a chronic disease of the oral mucosa characterized by inflammation and a progressive fibrosis of the lamina propria and deeper connective tissues. It is a condition predominantly seen among people of Indian origin, and an epidemiologic survey done a decade ago showed no less than 250,000 cases in India, a figure that must have increased sharply. OSF is a condition with a high risk of malignant transformation; to date, no conclusive etiologic agent has been identified, although plenty of data have been generated on various aspects of the disease. These include g

A clinical and epidemiological longitudinal survey was made from 1985 to 1989 in four villages of a dracunculiasis hyper endemic region of Benin to identify indices usable in evaluation of prevalence or incidence of dracunculiasis. 720 patients were examined. 93.5% presented a typical eruption of one or more worms. Inflammatory, infectious or mechanical complications were observed in 57.5% of cases and induced disabilities in 44.7% of patients. Although retrospective surveys are easier, authors do not recommend such studies. Cross-sectional surveys would be performed at the peak of transmissio

Tuberculous, fungal, and parasitic infections infect millions of people throughout the world. While other problems usually overshadow their rheumatologic manifestations, nearly all these infections can involve bone or joints and may on occasion present with rheumatologic symptoms. The classic model of these diseases presenting as chronic monoarticular arthritis is still generally valid but other presentations, such as tenosynovitis with atypical mycobacterial infections, erythema nodosum with leprosy, coccidioidomycosis and histoplasmosis, and reactive arthritis with schistosomiasis and helmin
